Thanks Custardo

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2007 20:45

Another vote for Battlestar. I like Lost ok. None of the rest does anything for me. I think only Battlestar is anywhere near Buffy quality.

(Oh, I will be sending back the MN Shepherd costume. Thanks for the lend, again!)

DH is saying X Files is nice. Also Seven Days (which I must admit, doesn't totally make my ears bleed, while Stargate almost always does, except for that parody 100th episode, which was actually a bit funny. Don't tell DH I said as much, though).

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2007 20:47

Oh, it's totally different, but can you stand the work of Aaron Sorkin? He's funny and light in a bit of the same way as Joss Whedon, only with fewer kickass female characters, but funnier dialog. More erudite. Oh, no SF, though.

He did Sports Night, West Wing, and is now doing Studio 60, which I think is his best yet.

DH is now suggesting Samurai Jack and Arrested Development. Which are both good, but bear little to no resemblance to Joss Whedon, I think.

BuffysMum · 02/01/2007 20:54

Battlestar is absolutely fab!!!

MrsBadger · 02/01/2007 20:59

Dead Like Me?

and there was another fantasy-type one about the end of the world or a girl who talks to God or something - think it was the name of the town involved... Joan of Arcadia! (thank you Wiki). Also Wonderfalls.

NB if you decide you can't recoup costs from Ebay effectively, have a look at renting them disc by disc through Amazon - for £10/month you get 6 discs / month (3 at a time)

Tortington · 02/01/2007 21:02

theres one where a young pretty thing married to ambulenceman in town and owns small antique shop helps ghosts.

dunno what thats called i forget

tribpot · 02/01/2007 22:37

Ghost Whisperer, just being advertised on abc1.

tribpot · 02/01/2007 22:39

NQC, where have you seen Studio 60? (Surely it's not on and I missed it?!)

I love Sports Night - fabulous predecessor to the immortal West Wing.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2007 22:44

tribpot, it, erm, fell off the back of the internet. So to speak.

We've just started watching Sports Night, recently (which also, ahem, fell off the back of the internet), and are loving it. Pity there are only two serieses.

Studio 60 is amazing. I love it. Love love love.

tribpot · 02/01/2007 22:50

Sports Night's been on abc1 so you can pretend it didn't fall off the back of the internet at least. I love the dialogue - so WW but not quite. Plus Felicity Huffman, what's not to like.

Studio. We know Channel 4 have it, bring it on, people!

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2007 22:59

Yes, and Peter Krause.

What's ABC1? I think I've seen it on the freeview thing, but isn't it one you pay for?

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2007 23:01

Oh, I have a theory that Studio 60 will be a big big hit here and maybe reduce the risk of it being cancelled (although a lot of wealthy people watch it in the US, the numbers aren't actually that big).

I think Aaron Sorkin has quite a British sense of humour, in a way. And unlike Sports Night, or the West Wing, the central theme of this series is (sorta) something Brits can get better. It's at least somewhat less US-centric than the other two.

bea · 02/01/2007 23:06

definitely x files... series 1 - 4 absolutely fab... although it did get a little too pleased with itself at times... but definitely the early series.... hmmmm spooky mulder!!!!!

lemonaid · 02/01/2007 23:08

Agree Battlestar and Veronica Mars.

Also, in a non-SF vein though, Scrubs.

MrsBadger · 03/01/2007 10:39

abc1 is free on freeview (now, not sure it always was) - very good for back-to-back Scrubs

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 03/01/2007 10:39

Custardo, I've watched Season 1 of SG Atlantis - Season 2 seems to be expensive on DVD at the moment though or not available til February (can't work that one out myself!).

Looks like suggestion 1 is Battlestar glactica so may well start with that

Ta.

House (hilariously funny and a bit dark)
Lost
Prison Break
Deperate housewives
Smallville
The american Office
Watch out for Ugly Betty on 5ht jan c4
Nip/Tuck

Cappuccino · 03/01/2007 11:24

Farscape

lemonaid · 03/01/2007 16:31

The pilot episode of Battlestar Galactica (which explains what's going on, so you really need to watch it first) is on a different DVD and not in the boxset with Series One, just to confuse you. I think it's called Battlestar Galactica: The Mini-Series, or something like that, and you can get it for a fiver on Amazon.

(guess who was nearly tripped up by that buying BG for her brother for Christmas...)

Enid · 03/01/2007 16:32

Entourage

3rdTriMossTer · 03/01/2007 16:38

US:
Babylon 5
Farscape
Deep Space Nine

UK:
Doctor Who (once you've done the latest series you can go back in time to 1963 and start there!)
Robin of Sherwood (eighties series)
Robin Hood (new series)

FlamesparrowThePirate · 03/01/2007 16:41

Lost track of what's been mentioned but...

Tru Calling
Dead Like Me (maybe?)
Not really sci-fi ish but CSI has the various series so you can watch em forever, also 10,000 eps of ER out now.

Heroes I am LOVING but it is just download, and its on a break for a couple more weeks.

Alias, Dark Angel and Prison Break are all ones I want to see.

House
Farscape
My Name is Earl for a bit of comedy?
Charmed
Smallville
Ooh how about Roswell (only saw the first season though)?

nikkie · 03/01/2007 18:52

If you go for Charmed there is a mag/dvd thing out atm with 3 episodes on , you could get the first one to try?

nikkie · 03/01/2007 18:55

44 thousand? (is that what its called?)

10,000 episodes of e.r. ,that would be a major marathon.

RubberDuckInLeftoverCurry · 03/01/2007 19:12

Scrubs - is brilliant
