by best I mean friendly and not outrageously expensive, with local schools not awful (though a bit below average is fine). pref near somewhere where we might rent an office.

Try

Eadon, Lockwood & Riddle

Blundells

Saxton Mee

Haybrook

UnquietDad · 04/01/2007 15:48

There 's a 4-bed in Hillsborough for £140 with Haybrooks but I can't get a link to post. Do a search for S6 on their site.

fizzbuzz · 04/01/2007 17:12

Hillsborough feeds to v bad school IMO, as does S35. Sheffield is a polarised city with areas either v bad or v good.

I still think areas of Bradfield, Dungworth will suit you best as to what you what. they are really lovely and very rural, and feed to a good school.

As a teacher totally endorse your idea of giving schools a go, but having taught in some of those schools, would not recommend them.If you need any more info re this, please feel free to contact me via Mumsnet. To all S10 mumsnetters, thanks so much for all messages. Will deffo contact you, but Dd has been PITA all day, and this is the first time I have been able to get on to post, and now have to go and make tea!

SenoraPartridge · 04/01/2007 17:18

I'd heard that about Sheffield. off to look at bradfield and dungworth now. dungworth sounds nice and down to earth at least!

OP posts:
SenoraPartridge · 04/01/2007 17:21

unquietdad - are those local estate agents you'd trust or just ones you know? we'll be renting initially and may have to rent without viewing (but we will come over and look at all the areas first - that's why I want to try to narrow it down)

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 04/01/2007 17:28

We bought with ELR and sold with Blundells - was fairly painless. Sold with Saxton Mee the first time, and they were OK - friends went with Haybrooks and had good experience.

And we had an awful time with Reeds Rains.

But there seems to be no logic to it, to be honest. You hear good and bad stories about them all.

Broadly fizzbuzz is right that Sheffield is polarised, but there are some "OK" areas. And what will suit one person may not suit another. I know some people who are delighted to have moved to Hillsborough, and others who are desperate to move!

fizzbuzz · 04/01/2007 18:03

There is also a place called (get this) Ug! This is very close to Dungworth.....Don't know where they get these names...

UnquietDad · 04/01/2007 18:18

I've heard of Ughill. Are you sure there is an Ug?

fizzbuzz · 04/01/2007 18:21

Yes of course...mean Ughill, but I am sure there is a place name round there which has 2 letters in it...but can't think what it is.

katzg · 05/01/2007 12:01

estate agents wise like udad says they are all much of a muchness. If you need someone to nosey round a few places i'm happy to have a look! i love house hunting!

katzg · 05/01/2007 12:02

unquietdad - are you in sheffield then?

UnquietDad · 05/01/2007 12:18

Yes, I am.

MerryChristmasPANDAGHappyNewYe · 05/01/2007 12:39

I'm happy to go househunting with Katz for you SP - I like looking round houses too!

Fizzbuzz - if you want to contact me I'm on pandag at safe hyphen mail dot net. DD starts school on Monday so am looking to keep myself occupied, so a coffee in Crookes would be fun!

SenoraPartridge · 05/01/2007 12:53

really panda and katz? you are nutters. might take you up on that though - there would be a meal/few drinks in it for you obv.

so places to look at are

Dungworth/Bradfield/Storr (this area having the most votes)
Loxley
Hillsborough (but watch out for school catchment areas)
oughtibridge
Rivelin
Broomhall (but expensive isn't it?)
Dore (ditto)
drongfield
new whittington
chesterfield (which I like the look of, but which doesn't seem to have the same sense of civic pride as sheffeild. think we have to go and find out.

can I look at all those areas in a weekend? I'll have a big property search over the weekend for more info.

Really SP! By the way Broomhill and Broomhall different. Broomhill is pricey, very good catchment etc., Broomhall is less salubrious, parts are/were a red light district I believe. Is closer to the city. HTH

SenoraPartridge · 05/01/2007 13:10

righty. prob not broomhall then. don't really want to be right in the city centre.

OP posts:
fizzbuzz · 05/01/2007 13:54

Yeah Broomhall very dodgy indedd, BUT does feed to Silverdale School I believe which is best school in Sheffield, and one of best in country.

However don't even like driving through Broomhall. Some parts of it are lovely though...old georgian terrace complete with cobbled street right next to city centre

katzg · 05/01/2007 14:17

Broomhall isn't as bad as it was, i walk through it twice a week as my girls nursery is down there, but there's Broomhall and there's Broomhall!!

SP - i can get you a property press and post it to you if you want, it would give you an idea of house prices both for buying and renting.

email me on [email protected]

comes out every friday, some of the estate agents give it away free if not its in the sheffield telegraph

fizzbuzz · 05/01/2007 19:45

These places are all practically next door to each other:
Dungworth/Bradfield/Storr (this area having the most votes)
Loxley
Hillsborough (but watch out for school catchment areas)
oughtibridge
Rivelin

Start at Hillsborough, which is nearest city centre and go out from there. all the country places lead into each other from there. Also Worral which is near all those places is really nice, but a little exp perhaps.

worzella · 09/01/2007 20:59

I'm also an S10 MNetter - Broomhill rather than Crookes though!!! - and I teach at a school in S10 although I'm also on maternity leave at the moment....

What about the top end of Stannington...?There's a lovely estate of newish houses that feeds into Bradfield School - woould think that's your best option - Myers is a place to be avoided...

fizzbuzz · 09/01/2007 21:51

OOooooooh...where do you teach?.....Do I know you? Primary or secondary?

UnquietDad · 09/01/2007 22:26

worzella - that would be the Acorn Estate. It is indeed very nice, and in the catchmnt for Stannington infants, Nook lane and Bradfield, all "desirable".

Although there is part of Stannington - not sure if it is there - which has a reputation for being something called "SWAG Estate", standing for "Swapping Wives & Girlfriends"! Apparently it's all terribly "Footballers' Wives"...

worzella · 10/01/2007 19:48

I'll have to ask my friend who lives on one of the roads on that estate whether she's done the swapping!

Oh and Fizzbuzz - I work at the one you don't!!

Hulababy · 10/01/2007 19:56

Oi, GB - you have visited Lodge Moor too!

Hulababy · 10/01/2007 20:08

Some parts of Broomhall are actually quite nice, but you need to be top end towards Broomhill really - nearer bits to hospital are better than those further down. DD's nursery was in Broomhall and some of places near there were nice. have friends in a huge old house in Broomhall which is lovely. The primary catchment is not great (I used to live in front of it in the city) but it is the best secondary in the area.

Hi fizzbuzz - happy to meet up for coffee; we are friendly and pdon't bite, promise

SP - the school I mentioned as "not so great" - going on what a friend told me from when she looked round, and rejected, for her DD. She didn't like it. Mind you, our local catchment is Hallam which was 3rd best school in the city (primary) this year - but we rejected it as it just didn't feel right at all on our visit.

Some parts of Stannington are nice too I belive - have friends looking for a house out there maybe.

Schools in Sheffield are very polarised as good or not good IME, much more so than a lot of areas I have worked in/know about.
