For a long while now dh has talked about getting out of this country and living in Australia/New Zealand, he says he has nothing to keep him here (fair enough)..(he's had this dream since he was a boy!!

I am always very happy to support him in every which way and am almost so with this one, however tonight I suddenly had this feeling that I would be miles away from my family/friends and for the first time in my life I am settled and feel very comfortable in the area we live...Have said to dh that maybe we could do a trial peroid over there to see how we like/not like it as it is a big step and once you've done it there is no turning back....thing is he says he has nothing to keep him here thing I would miss my work colleagues/family/friends....am I being selfish, any advice from anyone who has been through this before or anyone who has any advice at all appreciated...thanks in advance

nZ is a beautiful country don't get me wrong - I suppose naively when I married a kiwi the prospect of emigrating never came into my mind - DH always said he didn't want to go 'home'. Then after we were married and had DS (things change when you throw a child into the equation I guess!!) he suddenly announced he wanted to come back to NZ - that was in the may/june and we arrived int he sept!!!! I was for the idea, although hesitant initally as was also sick of working f/t, commuting, missing out on DS growing up, never going anywhere ofa w/e because of London traffic etc. I just had no idea how much I would miss my family or how hard it would be so far from home.

Having said that we have talked about moving back to France or Spain - language issues there I know but at least are a short hop on the plane home. At the moment my grandmother is dying - who knows how long she has to live - and I may not get the chance to see her again - am 29 weeks pregnany - if I fly now I cannot get insurance to fly back, will have to have baby in England whichmeans being away from DH for months etc....it si just so far from home at times like these.
I also get upset that when the baby is born I won't be able to show him off to everybody...

Dear Baldrick..
I have just seen this thread ....after visiting the virtual bar last night and sharing my news.
My family and I, yesterday, got the news we have been aiming for for over a year....we have been granted permanent visas for OZ.
It has been a very hard 12 months.
After initialy making our decision last summer we engaged the help of an agent. We have applied with my husbands skills of nursing as they were on the 'demand' list.
This year we have had loads of paperwork to do, medicals, x-rays, blood tests and court cases to enable us to go. I also lost my dear dad. dh and I have had an awful time, relationship wise...and we also moved house ...to an awful area where we have rented for the past 6 months in order to be ready for the move.
But last night we were all so happy that finaly those visas had arrived...now the fun begins.
We, most likely will emigrate the first week in sept...to Perth.
So g-day Baldrick and if you want any advice just let me know...and I will help if I can.

janinlondon - my dh has permanent residency - as we have been married less than two years but have dd.

If they had been married for five years it is the same - or less than five years and have children. I do know about the to yera temporary visa as friends of ours got married and applied straight away and the english husband only has temporary residency.

It is easier for us as all my family are there and dh has been out three times with me - gets on with all of my friends etc... not like moving out there and knowing no one or nothin about the place.

sibble - it probably took me at least two years to settle into living in England when I first arrived.

Bloss is right I am a Pom and DH is a Sandgroper.
We were due to go the exactly the same time as you, Israel, but it looks like it's going to be a month earlier now - why wait?

israel · 25/05/2004 09:55

G-day suzywong...yes what a coincidence!!....We would be going as soon as poss...but a very close friend of mine has decided to marry on the 21st of aug..and asked my dd to be one of her bridesmaids...so as soon after that as we can get a flight.
Do you know which area you will settle in?...We will be heading north...my dh family are all around the northern corridor.

israel · 25/05/2004 09:59
