Does anyone object to second hand clothing for their children?

Are you perfectly happy for your kids to wear second hand clothes, or does it all have to be brand new - with tags? If so why?

And if not, what do you feel about those who insist upon it?

I am more than happy yo have second hand for my children, especially as most of them are in such condition as they tend to be outgrown rather than worn out.

JesusWasReallyWelsh · 17/12/2006 19:21

My DD only wears brand new clothes, and always has.

I have no opinion on those parents who dress their children in second hand clothes, each to their own.

tribpot · 17/12/2006 19:21

Ds has a number of male cousins a bit older than him, always very happy to get their handmedowns!

Blondilocks · 17/12/2006 19:21

I'm happy to accept second hand items from people I know & also to pass items on / donate to charity shops. However, I'm not so keen on buying stuff which I don't know the origin of or who wore it. I don't know why really.

ISawTortoiseKissingSantaClaus · 17/12/2006 19:22

I often buy 2nd hand for my 4 DC.As long as there are no damage/stains then they are fine for my lot to wear.
I'm surprised how many people actually have new with tags to sell.

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow · 17/12/2006 19:22

99% of ds1's stuff is second hand, which has saved us loads. I do feel though that I'd like ds2 to have some new stuff, as third hand is looking a bit shabby. Not his baby stuff, but once he gets to about 18 months or so. I've already chucked alot of ds1's clothes from that size up, and the rest are dubious!

charliecat · 17/12/2006 19:22

I have personally brought one lot of new clothes for dd1 when she was about 2. Shes now...9 and everything she has worn before and after that has been second hand
In fact, she wears it 2nd hand from a set of triplets, then its gets passed on to my friends little girl, then back to dd2
School clothes are brought new, and cheaply out of season.
Sometimes my kids look like scruff balls. But thats more to do with my lack of colour coordination and refusal to iron.
Once somethings been in the wash once its not new anyway.
If someone else wants to buy new, thats fine. Pass it onto me when your done with it!
I buy my clothes second hand too. Its good to recycle.

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow · 17/12/2006 19:23

the few bits i've bought for ds2 are new to him... tortoise had some great mad stuff a while ago!

colditz · 17/12/2006 19:26

Oh, Welshy, you can't say I didn't try, but everyone is being starngely nonconfrontational!

Love love love secondhand clothes - couldn't live without them!

Not only do the kids wear second hand stuff, but I do too. I buy most of my trousers from Cancer Research .

I'm always amazed at the good quality of the secondhand things I get - once my dds have finished with their things they are only fit for the bin

Miaou · 17/12/2006 19:33

ooops posted before I had finished

I think that if people insist on brand new the whole time then that's their perogative [sp?], but it's more environmentally friendly to share

climbingrosie · 17/12/2006 19:34

I love getting my ds second hand stuff, we've found some great bargains over the years and he's very outdoorsy and always wearing holes in his jeans so if they are second hand he can wear them out/rip them/stain them as much as he wants without me minding!

A lot of his new stuff comes from ebay (still with tags on) for a ocuple of quid so again it isn't a big deal if they get worn out.

He always looks clean and smart, always has ironed clothes, and is usually colour co-ordinated (ish) so looks good! Don't think anything of people always buying new clothes though, it's up to them and I might too if I had lots of disposable income!

nutcracker · 17/12/2006 19:35

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, so long as it's clean and tidy then I don't care how many people have worn it before.

My kids have had some lovely 2nd hand clothes thatI wouldn't have been able to afford to buy new.

I get nearly all of Ds's clothes from ebay as Next stuff fits him really well but I can't afford to buy it new. Last purchase was 2 jumpers for £3.95 inc p&p

nutcracker · 17/12/2006 19:36

I never seem to do very well for me in chairty shops or ebay, plenty for the kids though.

DarrellRivers · 17/12/2006 19:37

Quite like second-hand hand-me-downs from people we know, not so keen on those we don't know.
DH, I suspect would always like DC in new, new , brand new stuff, but has relaxed on the issue slightly over the years.
Don't know why
and I don't really mind what anyone else does with their clothes or anyone elses

JesusWasReallyWelsh · 17/12/2006 19:37

I sell all DDs clothes on Ebay, so thats my bit for the enviroment.

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 17/12/2006 19:38

a large % of my kdis stuff is second hand. i am currently on the hunt for a second hand coat for dd2, who has shot up 3inches in as many weeks it seems.

nutcracker · 17/12/2006 19:40

TBH my kids would spend all their time in their underwear if it weren't for 2nd hand stuff or Primark lol.

airy · 17/12/2006 19:40

I love second hand clothes for DD and for myself. We have a lot of lovely clothes that we would never have been able to get had it not been for people passing down or charity shops.
As long as clothes are clean and tidy I don't see how it really makes a difference. Especially with kids clothes, they grow so fast that most second hand stuff has hardly been worn.

olittletownofberolina · 17/12/2006 19:41

Most of ds's stuff is second-hand, and most of that is lent or given by friends with older children. We've just lent what baby stuff was actually ours to other friends. In Berlin there are a lot of really lovely 2nd hand children's clothes/toy shops, so I'll sometimes buy there.

colditz · 17/12/2006 19:41

For all those who say yes to second had clothes, but not from people they don't know - why?

not a challenge, just curiosity.

treacletart · 17/12/2006 19:41

More than half of Ds's stuff is "vintage". Quite apart from the financial saving I astually find it much easier to find nice stuff without death head skulls or stupid slogans on it by looking through ebay and the many many charity shops in our town.

climbingrosie · 17/12/2006 19:42

was wondering the same colditz...just out of curiosity...

olittletownofberolina · 17/12/2006 19:44

Me too. Surely a good check over before buying, and then a good wash at home, is enough?
