Are you perfectly happy for your kids to wear second hand clothes, or does it all have to be brand new - with tags? If so why?

And if not, what do you feel about those who insist upon it?

ddg, i must say, i do symathise, i was dressed from charity shops/jumble sales as a child and...not fun, once you're a bit older. A few up to date bits can make such a difference to some kids self esteems...I was actually into vintagey stuff but this was the early 90s when the shops were filled with shoulder pads and hot pink. and theres me hankering after a lace trimmed velvet jacket...

when dd1 was newborn, everything was new and i didn't want stuff from other people, politely declined A LOT.
however by the time she went to nursery i was taking clothes from cousins/friends etc as quickly as they could hand them over!
DD2 has tons of clothes from DD1 and friends/cousins, but that means that when i do get her new stuff it is gorgeous (& expensive ) as i don't have to do the "bulk" nursery kit out kind of stuff. Her "wardrobe" is definitely a better one than DD1 had.

I buy loads from boosales, charity shops, Ebay for me. Dd had loads when she was little and the odd few bits now.
Ds I do buy all new and I pay quite a bit for his clothes as with boys I think they do tend to go for the labels, football shirts etc and dh is insistent he isn't the odd one out iykwim.

I can count the items of 'new' clothing I have bought for the dd's on one hand.I love getting beautiful, good quality clothes from charity shops, bootsales ect.One wash & they are as good as new if you choose carefully.

I'm always getting comments on how well dressed my girls are & it makes me smile when 99% of what they are wearing cost about 50p-£1.

I have lots of fairly well off friends who also delight buying second hand clothes. We have 9 girls between us,the eldest 7 the youngest 9 months,so the stuff gets passed around & around again.

I also hate waste in any form,I like the idea that clothing is being reused,or as my friend says,'reloved'.
