Special snowflake if ever I encountered one. Blocked me on Twitter after she posted a comment about British jobs going to British people, to which I asked which country her Topshop jeans were made in. Hardly inflammatory, more inviting discussion. Her Times columns have taken on a new vibe since being blocked for a seemingly innocent observation. I have her books and until recently bought The Times Saturday for her musings. Since the Twitter block I've come to the conclusion that Caitlin Moran is an attention seeking, self-publicising dolt. Her name isn't even Caitlin, it's Catherine, and she says her version of the pronunciation of Caitlin is 'cat lin', not 'cayt lin' as most of us know. Look at me, look how different I am.

I'm going to get flamed for this but she can be summed up by the sentence 'I grew up on a council estate in Wolverhampton and was home educated, moved to London, got lucky in writing bile for a music magazine, got luckier in attracting the interest of a bloke who I make a career out of extolling the virtues of his ineptitude as a human, and I am better than you because I am a council girl done good who writes for a right wing newspaper, so up the bum to you'.

You said something she didn't like. She blocked you. I'm sure she gets quite a few messages. She doesn't have to engage and she doesn't owe you an explaination OP.

She probably blocks lots of people just because she CBA with them. And I think that's an ok thing to do with social media. Judging by some of the threads on MN I think a lot of people would be a lot happier if they just used the Block function more often.

springscoming · 03/01/2016 00:03

I can take or leave her.
I thought Twitter was mostly about advertising or sleb puffery anywsy so I'm not surprised.
But I wish to buggery that she and Billy Connolly (sp? cba) would stop banging on forever about their working class background. It all rings a bit hollow when they're raking the money in in their millionnaire homes and have been for some years. Good luck to them re the cash. I don't begrudge them a single penny of it but please stop milking the poor working class background for it all these years hence.

BestIsWest · 03/01/2016 00:06

She named herself Caitlin iafter one of the characters in Jilly Cooper's Rivals.

I don't mind her to be honest.

But don't class her with Bill Bryson. He's a great writer.

Boogers · 03/01/2016 00:11

Dione - I didn't message, I commented. That's the nature of Twitter. She blocked me - fine. She considers me a troll - fine. I think she's a special snowflake - fine. I express my views - fine. All's fine, nothing to worry about. DH was going to buy me her latest book for some kind of present giving ceremony to mothers in March but my staunch reply of 'no thanks, I'd rather you buy me something useful, like tampons' kind of directed him to my thinking of her musings.

OP posts:
DioneTheDiabolist · 03/01/2016 00:29

Did she call you a troll?Shock

QueenLaBeefah · 03/01/2016 00:39

Don't do Twitter so can't really comment on that

Loved "How to be a Woman" but "How to Build A Girl" was one of the worst books I have ever read. And I read some shite in my time.

Boogers · 03/01/2016 00:51

Dione - I have no idea if she called me a troll or not as I'm blocked from looking at anything she writes, except for re-tweeted stuff. I just assumed she thought I was some kind of annoying troll-like irritation for picking her up on a twatty statement.

OP posts:
SpecialistSnowflake · 03/01/2016 00:57

Same, QueenLaBeefah - it just seemed like a fictionalization of the first one. Crap. I'll read the reviews for the next one before I buy it.

I got blocked by a celeb I like for giving a genuine compliment that I realized later looked a bit back-handed. Oh well. I didn't take it personally though, famous people must get so many dickish tweets that I don't blame them if they're a bit OTT with the block button sometimes.

kua · 03/01/2016 01:04

Don't take it personally. I've been blocked from following some people due to others I follow. There are apps that you can download to filter your followers, which is a bit frustrating as I like to see both sides of an issue.

Boogers · 03/01/2016 01:04

I read quite a lot of Lord Sugar's tweets where he's replied with 'you're blocked, and to be fair they're mostly to twattish tweets of 'you're fired'. Didn't have CM down as being someone who shied away from discourse though. Thought she was better than that.

OP posts:
SleepyForest · 03/01/2016 01:11

You sound a bit hurt Boogers. Understandably so.

CM can be an idiot , as I am sure she would be the first to admit. She does make me laugh though.

Boogers · 03/01/2016 01:30

Sleepy - I'll admit I was genuinely hurt when I realised she'd blocked me as I own her books and read the Saturday Times magazine primarily for her column. This was all about 6 months ago though and I've stopped reading her Times musings after seeing them through non rose tinted spectacles. DH mentioned tonight that she had a new book out soon and would that be an idea for Mother's Day, to which my honest answer was 'I'd rather have something useful, like a box of tampons'.

Never meet your idols. I'm hoping richard Osman and Al Murray aren't dicks!

OP posts:
ouryve · 03/01/2016 16:14

Al Murray gives as good as he gets and then re-tweets it for the world to see!

Moln · 03/01/2016 16:28

Maybe you should have suggested where she could get jeans made in Britain instead (assuming that your question was to make that point).

Where can you buy British made jeans? Genuine question OP.

bearleftmonkeyright · 03/01/2016 16:30

Hiut

planter · 03/01/2016 16:46

I used to read her column a lot. I skip over her now - there's only so much interesting stuff a columnist can churn out week after week. She seems to have reached her limit.

LynetteScavo · 03/01/2016 18:57

I've never got the fuss about CM.

Which is why I haven't bothered with her books.

I can understand why you're peed off she blocked you. Her loss overall.

YakTriangle · 03/01/2016 19:40

A lot of celebs on Twitter are only on there for adulation. They don't want anyone to disagree or debate with them, they just want a chorus of people telling them they're amazing. And this is from someone who's never been blocked by anyone. I don't bother trying to tweet celebs, it annoys me how so many of them only reply to other famous people.

MetallicBeige · 03/01/2016 20:52

I stopped following her after my Twitter was constantly taken up with convos between her and India Knight and the other ones in their circle.
I never tried to tweet them, but saw other people ('normal' folk probs) trying to engage and chat and they were ignored.
What's the point? If you want to chat amongst yourselves go to dm. Or is it to show off a bit? Hmm

MetallicBeige · 03/01/2016 20:53

I spent so long typing that (watching tv at same time) that Yak has said what I was trying to, perfectly. Delayed cross post.

derxa · 03/01/2016 20:57

I've looked at her Twitter. My bile is rising.

SwedishEdith · 03/01/2016 21:00

God, don't ever disagree with Andrew Neil or Toby Young (I don't but have watched AN to know). They both seem to boast about Muting people rather than blocking - they find this more satisfying. It's just a self-promotion tool for most names.

fusspot66 · 03/01/2016 21:43

Omg I just Googled Hiut jeans. £125! I'll have to keep buying sweatshop/ supermarket jeans if that's the alternative.

Moln · 03/01/2016 21:57

Oh I hadn't realised Hiut was British made jeans; I thought bearleftmonkeyright had just randomly wrote a strange word!!

M48294Y · 03/01/2016 22:03

I think it is cringetastically embarrassing to share how much you loved her ... until she dared to block you from her Twitter.

And so now, because of that, you don't like her any more. And you don't want to read any more of her books. Ner ner ner ner.

How incredibly childish.
