Caitlin Moran

Special snowflake if ever I encountered one. Blocked me on Twitter after she posted a comment about British jobs going to British people, to which I asked which country her Topshop jeans were made in. Hardly inflammatory, more inviting discussion. Her Times columns have taken on a new vibe since being blocked for a seemingly innocent observation. I have her books and until recently bought The Times Saturday for her musings. Since the Twitter block I've come to the conclusion that Caitlin Moran is an attention seeking, self-publicising dolt. Her name isn't even Caitlin, it's Catherine, and she says her version of the pronunciation of Caitlin is 'cat lin', not 'cayt lin' as most of us know. Look at me, look how different I am.

I'm going to get flamed for this but she can be summed up by the sentence 'I grew up on a council estate in Wolverhampton and was home educated, moved to London, got lucky in writing bile for a music magazine, got luckier in attracting the interest of a bloke who I make a career out of extolling the virtues of his ineptitude as a human, and I am better than you because I am a council girl done good who writes for a right wing newspaper, so up the bum to you'.

the random strangers are her fans though, so she should imoho be a little nicer to them. Or at least diplomatic in answering tweets.

i went on john cusack from his twitter, he's a twit in real life, which shattered my illusions of him being super cool

lljkk · 02/01/2016 21:50

CM's oft-quoted (on MN) definition of feminist irks me enormously.

I'm not a fan but this kind of bitchfest is unseemly. It's very easy to avoid CM if you want to.

southeastastra · 02/01/2016 21:55

well yes but op has said that she was a fan and she's not anymore!

it's just a bit ott to block someone, i've posted crap to celebs whilst pissed on twitter and they didn't block me - get a backbone celebs and surely they would like people to not agree with everything they say which would be tiresome surely

Oblique27 · 02/01/2016 21:57

Not a fan of CM, being female is not a qualification. But please don't put Bill Bryson in the same category, he is great and still makes me laugh

Tanaqui · 02/01/2016 22:00

I like her look- sometimes I like her writing. I think she would be fun in real life. I think it's a bit off to bring a Twitter spat here- feels a bit behind her back.

FreshHorizons · 02/01/2016 22:03

I have always found her irritating and no longer read anything she writes.

bearleftmonkeyright · 02/01/2016 22:05

I got blocked by Ivan Doroshuk from Men without Hats for a similar reason. To be honest I think it's a very self important thing to do. He was spouting on about helping Canadian homeless before Syrian refugees. I made an innocuous comment about its not an either or situation and I was blocked from his Facebook page. Meh, celebrities.

Ubik1 · 02/01/2016 22:05

I think
If you are prepared to start a thread bitching about her then she was probably right to block you Hmm

I'm sure she's annoying at times. But so am i. And so is everyone else

regenerationfez · 02/01/2016 22:07

Gwen the working class thing annoys me too. She has made a career out of her growing up on a council estate with 8 siblings, poor but happy. But there is a world of difference between being brought up by public school educated hippies who have books in the house to home educate you and being 7th generation unemployed family being caught up in a cycle of under education and deprivation.

However, I do like her sometimes and enjoy reading her columns. I just wish she would be a bit less irritating!

SwedishEdith · 02/01/2016 22:07

Grin @ "I got blocked by Ivan Doroshuk from Men without Hats"

bearleftmonkeyright · 02/01/2016 22:08

Grin. It's true!!! I was perturbed. I love to Safety Dance.

southeastastra · 02/01/2016 22:09

oh come on ubilk you post on the www for everyone to see they get prissy if someone disagrees with you??

i think i was introduced to the www by mn and learnt to be hard skinned, i wouldn't dream of blocking anyone who disagreed with me, that way self important wanker lies, though if the cap fits...

southeastastra · 02/01/2016 22:11

and surely if you are a journalist you could cope with a little disagreement and argue your points back. lordy is twitter just 'listen to me' shit

Ubik1 · 02/01/2016 22:19

But there is a world of difference between being brought up by public school educated hippies who have books in the house to home educate you and being 7th generation unemployed family being caught up in a cycle of under education and deprivation.

Hmm

Working class people do have books in the house. Some can even read. You don't have to be seventh generation unemployed, to be working class. It's not a competition.

But it remains that if you are a clever but portly girl growing up on a council estate in an unfashionable area, you do not have as many advantages as the swishy haired of west London. Particularly in journalism.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/01/2016 22:23

"Working class people do have books in the house. Some can even read. You don't have to be seventh generation unemployed, to be working class. "

But it remains a fact that Moran is not working class (at least by many people's definition).

"it remains that if you are a clever but portly girl growing up on a council estate in an unfashionable area, you do not have as many advantages as the swishy haired of west London. Particularly in journalism."

Maybe so, but you would have as much chance as a middle class person from any other unfashionable place.
Does being 'portly' have anything to do with it if we're talking about print journalism rather than TV?

regenerationfez · 02/01/2016 22:26

I know that. But she had advantages that many on her council estate wouldn't have had. She benefitted from her parents education and contacts. If you do not have that, you have an uphill struggle. She spends an awful lot of time in her books, columns and sitcom romanticising her 'poor but happy' upbringing.

Ubik1 · 02/01/2016 22:29

Does being 'portly' have anything to do with it if we're talking about print journalism rather than TV?

Yes it does. Sad but true.

southeastastra · 02/01/2016 22:30

she was never a big wig in the rl in the 90s , she was tolerated like julie burchill was. a non entity

i don't get why she think's she's so fab now but i expect if you have around with sychopants you get what you want from life

meh it would bore me

LavenderDoll · 02/01/2016 22:31

I like her and I like her books.

I have more issue with people who use the irritating "special snowflake" when describing someone.

I don't understand twitter but surely she can block who she likes Confused

MissBattleaxe · 02/01/2016 22:33

I read How to be a Woman and thought it was a bit lazily written and complacent. I read somewhere that it only took two weeks to write

Ubik1 · 02/01/2016 22:35

I dint know the woman but jeezo - I grew up on a council estate and spent Saturday's in the library Abd read books at home. My grandmother was grammar school educated but forced to leave at 15 to go work as s secretary.

I had friends whose parents were in trade or low grade civil service or taxi drivers who played musical
Instruments, were politically active and well read.

Not everyone who is working class, is dragged up. FIL gee up
On a scheme in Glasgow and still remembers his Latin,

southeastastra · 02/01/2016 22:36

who cares what her background is? social manner cost nowt and their reaction what sort of person they are is reflected in their reactions to people conversing with them on social media

get over yourself comes to mind

ihatethecold · 02/01/2016 22:38

i don't get why she think's she's so fab now but i expect if you have around with sychopants you get what you want from life

Was that a typo?Grin
