Do you tip your hairdresser and/or the person who washes your hair?

It's a continual question for me - I watch other people tip the person who washes my hair, and some who tip the hairdresser and I've never really understood if this is 'correct' etiquette at the hairdresser. I always tip in restaurants and I always tip taxi drivers, but somehow I feel it's unnecessary at the hairdresser - mainly because it's so bloody expensive! At £40+ for a straightforward cut and blow dry I really resent paying more on top of that. Or am I just being mean?

what do you do?

Not normally.

Although I did once leave a £5 tip because BabyDragon screamed like a banshee for 45 minutes despite being walked up and down the shopping centre by an assortment of staff before falling asleep in a pool of snot and tears on someone's oh-so-trendy black clad shoulder

Sorry - not been around long enough to have seen this before!

good to know that I'm not the only one to have been worried about this though!

I don't. I understand some of the awankier salons rent chairs to freelance stylists so they're not even on a basic wage but I don't go anywhere that big.
If I had a regular hairdresser (eg a mobile one) I might give her something out my spare pressie box.

julienetmum · 17/12/2006 21:58

My hairdresser won;t even let me pay her never mind tip her. We had a bit of a friendly argument about it last time.

My Dad in the past has done some work for her and her dh (a barber) that saved them money but it is getting a bit ridiculous now. She cuts mine, dd's sils and neices's hair and her dh cuts ds's, my Dad's and my brother's all for free.

We are going to insist on paying them something from now on.

hermykne · 17/12/2006 22:24

i dont tip as there is minimum wage now in the salons i frequent, i know the owners and i wasnt tipped when i was in retail providing a service.
i just hope they get hand cream included in their wage packets.

Hathor · 27/06/2007 11:48

What is it with all these hairdresser tip threads. A conspiracy of hairdressers?
Yes - tip 50%. Tip everyone, make their day.

I never tip and always feel as though they hover at the end waiting for something which annoys me. In fact I'm off to the hairdressers in 2 hours and will not get much change from £100 so will not feel so bad this time when I leave with all my change still in my purse

barbamama · 27/06/2007 11:57

I never tip, £55 is more than enough for a haircut as far as I am concerned.

SoupDragon · 27/06/2007 12:02

The only time I've ever tipped at the hair dresser is when I added £5 for the member of staff who'd walked BabyDragon endlessly up and down the shopping centre trying to stop her screaming until she dissolved in a snotty bundle on their immaculately clean oh-so-stylish black top.

flibbertyjibbet · 27/06/2007 12:05

£55, £57? How much hair do you lot HAVE?
I pay £22 and and only tip if, like another poster here, they have had to put up with a screaming child, or once when I had forgotten my purse, couldn't pay, so when I went back I gave her £25 and didn't take the change.

2shoes · 27/06/2007 12:13

i don't I pay £17 for a wet cut takes him 10 minuites so think that is enough

EmmyLou · 27/06/2007 12:13

I don't as a)I'm embarrassed to - makes me feel like a patronising granny, and b)I only go about 4 times a year and pay what feels like a small fortune to have hair cut and coloured and even with the mental maths of trying to work out how much I can knock off for the cups of tea and the shampoo head massage...I cannot really justify the cost. The stylist and colourist are professionals after all.

But I love going to a city centre salon as I live in a village. Need my fix of city centre self indulgent glamour every now and then.

EmmyLou · 27/06/2007 12:16

Having said that, I do tip the girl at our village salon who cuts my 3 dds hair.

barbamama · 27/06/2007 12:16

sigh - that's how much it costs in London - unless you go to a little local place where you might bet away with £35/40 but come out looking like you've been lobotomised.

dmo · 27/06/2007 14:01

i sort of round it off if hairdresser says that will be £57 please i just give her £60 and tell her to keep the change

MintyDixCharrington · 27/06/2007 14:02

I tip the girl who washes my hair a fiver(YTS on about £50 a week poor thing) but not my hairdresser because she owns the salon

If she didn't I'd tip her about 10% or a tenner which ever is more

i never tip the hair dresser i agree with the posts above that it costs co much to have your hair done anyway why pay even more?plus when ever i have thought about tipping never know how much to leave etcwould never even think to tip the hair washer they may just be on minimum wage but they are training to get paid better areblt they - plus i am on minimum wage myself and no one tips me (although i clean so not really tippable but still)never tip taxi drivers either

shhhh · 05/08/2008 14:47

I have been to the same hairdresser for around 10 years now and I never tip on each visit ( roughly 3 monthly..)
BUT I do at christmas tip them a good amount £10-£15 and leave wine & chocs.
