I;ve been thinking about this thread quite a bit Beetroot. I think that very likely you should take this opportunity, you are clearly incredibly excited by it and you will always wonder why you didn't. BUT (you knew that was coming ) I think you need to plant your feet firmly on the ground and think through the realities and how you and your family will cope with them. It's not just the logistical realities, it's the emotional realities - and these will not be confined to dcs. You will miss them terribly. You're talking about 11 months of work, some of them will be crap days (no job is 100 per cent enjoyable) when you will question why you are doing it, when you'll cry into the hotel mini-bar, when you will feel engulfed in guilt for taking yourself away and not even enjoying it. these days will almost certainly be in the minority and will be more than balanced by the good days. but they will happen. If you can take that on board now and still want to go then do it. I took a difficult decision in 2003 - very different in some respects but similar in others. It wasn;t a long period away from home - it was only 3 weeks but it was to Iraq. in 2003. I don;t regret doing it - it was one of the best work-related things I've ever done but I went through all manner of emotions. And I wouldn;t do it again. It actually helped me refine my relationship between work and family, and taught me a lot - about myself and about love. good luck, whatever you decide, but keep your eyes open to all the possible ways it will pan out.

Excited for you beety and glad you are getting positive feedback. Good post from fatwoman to balance things.
Hand on heart, couldn't do it myself.

fatwoman - thank you - a thought provoking post. I know I wil not alwys love the work. especaily the next few months which will be frantic and often tedious.

i am still unsure - i would love to do it- it is y time - i think. i have had a few fallow years, especially in the work I love so much.

But i will not take the decision lightly and will wait and settle into the idea first.

Thank you

I know that "fallow" feeling . Can the kids come and visit you? It could be so exciting for them. Also how does dh feel? The support I've had from dh over the years makes me want to weep sometimes.

Blackduck · 12/12/2006 13:08

If you do it Beety get in touch when you are in the Midlands - love to meet up....

6beetrootsAmilking · 12/12/2006 15:43

Kids could spend 6 weeks in aus and NZ

and come to LA at half term

DH amazingly supportive - says go for it.

Black duck oh yes - come and see it!!

After a glass of champrs it all sounds so easy!!!

beety
I'm lucky that my boss totally understands work/life balance and hasn't put any pressure on me to do any travelling since I had my daughters. This year I decided to go for it and went on a trip for a week to Mexico (I know, small beer, compared with yours ) and though I'm glad I did it, at this point (the girls are 3 and 6) it was just about right for my comfort zone...but yours are much older and you sound like you have more of a support system than I have. It took a helluva lot of planning (from telling dh how to do dd1's hair to pre-ordering the veg box) but it sounds like everyone will cope, x

6beetrootsAmilking · 12/12/2006 15:52

i think i need to order ready cooked home made meals for the times I am away. especailly while my mum is looking after them!!
