I think footmen/butlers were always called the name of their predecessor so the poshos didn't have to go to the trouble of learning a new name.

WW it's the English class system, innit? It's in our DNA and we know these things automatically. Either than or the TV shows far too many period dramas so we can't avoid finding these things out.
