DD1 (nearly 5) did show a preference for either hand however i have noticed over the past few weeks that although she draws with her right hand, she writes with her left.

i havent said anything as if she is left-handed i dont want it to be an issue.

where can i do some research about left handedness etc....

If she is showing that she is capable of using both then it's unlikely to ever cause problems... I'm left handed in the sense that I write with my left but my strongest/leading hand is my right so I do all things between both hands... I have to ask if I'm doing something left handed!!

My biggest problem with writing left handed is your hand drags across what you hace just written so it gets smudged - I'm not sure there's muych you can do about it though, just let her know it's ok.

hermykne · 23/11/2006 21:14

why? does it matter, does being left handed actually really mean anything?

me and my sis are , my husband is my children arent.

noddyholder · 23/11/2006 21:16

My dp and ds are left handed Apart from a bit of a do with scissors in reception being left handed has been fairly uneventful

southeastastra · 23/11/2006 21:16

my ds(13) is left handed. tbh it's never been an issue (except when we thought about playing the guitar!). there isn't anything to worry or reseach about iykwim!

TeeCee · 23/11/2006 21:16

my eldest is ambidextrous (sp)

mustrunmore · 23/11/2006 21:18

My well meaning Mum throughout my life has tried to buy me special left handed stuff; pens, scissors etc. What a waste of time. Cant work the stupid things. I really dont see why being left handed is an issue. To me its like saying 'oh god, dd is going to prefer bold colours to pastels, will this affect her life?'

7up · 23/11/2006 21:18

my son aged 2 is a definite left hander/footer. he has been for as long as i can remember. throws brill with left, kicks even better left.

totally crap with the right!

my sister is left handed and is a hairdresser and actually has left handed scissors, havent got a clue how that works though

LIZS · 23/11/2006 21:19

dd (5) is left handed but was obviously so from the moment she could hold a crayon. We make no real concessions at home but think they have left handed scissors at school and are more aware when helping with writing. What information are you looking for ? Anything Lefthanded and Bright Minds do adapted stuff and books or ask her teacher perhaps.

autumnlover · 23/11/2006 21:20

Please Please dont get me wrong. I am completely fine with her being left-handed but just wanted to be aware of it thats all and perhaps get her some left-handed sissors!!!

ds (7)is left handed but gets on very well with normal scissors etc.

it created a few problems when learning to do cursive writing at school as he would do some of his 'joins' the wrong way round.

he is also prone to smudging his work at school as his hand rubs over the still wet ink.

they say lefthanded people are more creative, and ds is definately a fab performer/dancer etc.

7up · 23/11/2006 21:23

youve done me a favour actually autumnlover because i hadnt thought of getting ds the left handed scissors, but i will now

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/11/2006 21:23

Ooh I hope my DD is left handed too - will be a nightmare teaching her to write otherwise.

All you need to know is that left handed people are (traditionally) logical and scientific rather than creative, so buy her a calculator and some puzzle books rather than a craft set for Christmas!

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/11/2006 21:24

peegeeweegee - that's the wrong way round - left handers are not creative!

zephyrcat · 23/11/2006 21:25

No left handers are more creative/artisic than academic.....

7up · 23/11/2006 21:27

well peeegeeewegees (awful name to type!) son is a one off left handed dancer/performer then have to say my toddler is a pretty funky dancer aswell

aDadOnMumsnet · 23/11/2006 21:28

I think if their hair growth swirls in an anti-clockwise direction from their crown, that is a sign of lefthandedness.
I've never tried to verify this in many people though we're all right handed here and hair swirl is clockwise.

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/11/2006 21:37

adom - is that a joke or for real? My dd has a double crown - will that affect things?!

The left side of the brain is the side responsible for logic, whereas the right is the creative side (business trainers often advise holding the phone to the relevant side depending on the type of conversation you are having!). I'm quite certain on this fact, so we'll have to agree to disagree .

aDadOnMumsnet · 23/11/2006 21:41

no it's for real... but I don't know how true it is. Read it in some book anyway.

Maybe a double crown means they grow an extra arm some time in their 30s and use that instead?

beckybrastraps · 23/11/2006 21:42

I am NOT creative.
I know it's a bit of fun, but the dangers of stereotyping is that children are pigeonholed into areas that may not fit them at all. Best not to think what the cognitive implications might possibly be, and just get her some left handed scissors IMO.

7up · 23/11/2006 21:42

PMSL

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/11/2006 21:43

Ooh - just think of all the things you could achieve with an extra arm! Wonderful!

beckybrastraps · 23/11/2006 21:45

Although the only thing I can think of that would be really useful is a LH keyboard. All the other things might be nice, but I'm not sure they don't cause more problems in the long run. We live in a RH world. If you don't learn to use RH stuff, then you could be at a disadvantage. Most of us managed to muddle through OK without all the LH paraphenalia.

3andnomore · 23/11/2006 21:46

my dh is lefthanded....but the only time he "prefers" something specially for lefthanded people iss a inkpen...he finds it easier to write with them, scissors etc...don't seem to make any difference etc...!

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/11/2006 21:47

What would be diff about a left handed keyboard?

beckybrastraps · 23/11/2006 21:50

Number pad on the left
