IM scared of hairdressers cos i have had too many extremely short haircuts, that wernt what i asked for. Why did you want to know?

FrannyandZooey · 17/11/2006 12:49

I am not scared of hairdressers, I like them very much indeed

Can I go to the hairdresser for all those of you who are scared?

Rhubarb · 17/11/2006 12:51

Yes! Hate them! Hate the thought of being touched as I'm not a touchy person, hate the thought of someone being in control of a part of my body - in control enough to change my looks! I hate being forced into chit-chat too and feeling as though my style is under scrutiny. I hate it when they try to force their own styles onto you, so although you tell them what you want, they do it their way anyway because they reckon they know more than you do.

Hate it hate it hate it!

TooTickyTheLittleRedHen · 17/11/2006 12:52

I hate going. I am afraid they will laugh at me.

OP posts:
TinyGang · 17/11/2006 12:56

I am.

Whatever they do depends on whether you have to wear a bag on your head for 6 mths or not.

I also feel ridiculous and vulnerable and the mirrors make me look hideous. I hear myself saying 'ooh lovely!' when I hate it but don't want to complain when I'm looking like a prat with my new 'do' cos it makes you sound petulant, and anyway they can't stick it all back on can they?!

Then there's the tipping thing - just had mine done and it cost me a fortune (thankfully it looks nice this time) but no way can I afford to start handing out tips too. I always feel daft doing it too - tipping seems to come from a bygone age.'Here you are my man a florin for your trouble'

So all told, I'd rather visit the doctor I think!

PinkTinsel · 17/11/2006 12:57

terrified, never had a good experiance.

and they bring on my migraines

JoolsToo · 17/11/2006 12:58

ha - I am going later, another new one. Basically I'm trying to find one that isn't deaf and who knows how to use a hair dryer to good effect.

I'd rather go to the dentist!

TooTickyTheLittleRedHen · 17/11/2006 13:02

Last time I went the Stupid, polite, don't-cause-any-trouble part of me failed to point out she had the top of my hair which I had struggled to grow and specifically didn't want cut. I smiles, paid and left. I have now grown it back but feel I could do with a bit of "tidying" - but I'mtoo scared. She thinks I'm weird anyway but I go there because she is a) cheaper than some b) in a side street with a slightly dingy shop so I can't be seen from outside and c) not too immaculately dressed/primped/coiffed and therefore slightly less scary.
But I'm not going back!

Oooh this is too spooky - I almost started this thread about two hours ago. Have just been to the hairdresser for the first time in two years - the same one I used to go to when I had a very, very short crop. My hair is now past my shoulders. For one horrible moment I thought he wasn't going to recognise me, which would have been quite embarrassing, but he did - and once I was there it was not too bad.

But I was so nervous before I went - like it was a job interview or something.

Hair is nice btw - it's all glammy and Farrah Fawcett ready for my night out but it doesn't actualy matter cos everyone will be looking at my enormous ZIT instead (I have a thread devoted to it elsewhere).

fairyjay · 17/11/2006 13:40

I just find the hairdressers so boring. And then I can't wait to get home to wash it!!

JoolsToo · 17/11/2006 17:53

have returned looking worse than when I went in - am I surprised?

no

JoolsToo · 17/11/2006 17:54

there was one highlight however.

Massaging chair at the hairwash!

pointydog · 17/11/2006 18:45

Not scared. Great dislike. Like tinygang, hate staring at myself in the mirror, noticing the start of a double chin, looking at my red blotchy skin, my crinkly small eyes with the towel pulling my hair up. Having to chat like everything is perfectly normal. Normal!!

FrayedKnot · 17/11/2006 18:50

I god I hate them.

And thanks for reminding me as I am going to a new one tomorrow..cringe.

I hate aving to look at myslef in the huge mirrors, with wet hair plastered to my head.

I hate they are always so hot.

I hate that most hairdressers these days seem to hate making conversation and just stand there looking sullen for most of teh time, then you pay them £35 or somesuch ripoff amount.

Sorry to any hairdressers out there - I have met a couple of lovely ones too, worht every penny.

Katherine · 17/11/2006 18:52

They terrify me. I'm sure its because my mum never took me as a child and always got her friends to cut it for her. I never know what to say or who and what to tip.

However I think my own kids will suffer from the same problem as I just discovered one if my friends was a hairdresser in a former life so this afternoon she gave me a trim and dyed it purple for me (at my request, I think she was more scared than me) and it looks fab.

foxinsocks · 17/11/2006 18:52

I hate them too - I just can't stand all the chat, the fact that no matter what I say, they all cut my hair exactly the same way....just a waste of time and money imo. I now go to a friend of mine (who's a hairdresser) and she cuts mine for me at her house. Much more relaxed and she does exactly what I want done!

Oh Jools - what a pain!! It will probably look better when you've washed it!

foxinsocks · 17/11/2006 18:53

I also hate the heat and the smell of all the products - makes me want to gag

ShowOfHands · 17/11/2006 18:55

Oh dear God, the torture! The banal conversation, the interrogation about hair care routines (er I wash it), the mirrors, the glare, the Saturday girl who washes your hair whilst simultaneously chewing gum and looking as bored as she can possibly muster without lapsing into a coma, the feigned delight as they hold up a mirror to show you the back of your head, the expense, the tipping, the sheer terribleness of it all.

ghosty · 17/11/2006 19:07

The key is to find one that you like and stay with them .... like finding a good dentist!

I used to be a hairdresser hater until I found Jock ... [swoon] ... He is fantastic, knows my hair and what I like and don't like ... When I first found him he was just a stylist in a salon - and I followed him when he moved salons to be their top stylist and last year he opened his own salon ... This year he won a category in the NZ Hairdresser of the Year competition ...
I think I love him

TooTickyTheLittleRedHen · 17/11/2006 19:17

So how do you find your ideal hairdresser?

OP posts:
DizzyBint · 17/11/2006 19:24

hate it hate it hate it!!!! thought i was the only one. i have very wurly hair and i am yet to find a hairdresser that can handle it. they always want to either straighten it or make it so damn big and bouffanty i have to tie it back straight away.

ghosty · 17/11/2006 19:25

hit and miss, try lots ...

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 17/11/2006 19:34

Me. Same problem as Dizzy - very curly hair and the blimmin hairdresser never accounts for just how curly it is and it invariably ends up too short.

multitasker · 17/11/2006 19:40

I have curly hair and its a bit of a nest if not looked after properly so I hate going to the hd as he will cut (and thin) it then put too much product in it and think he has created a masterpiece. Tip, for the torture? - you are kidding!!
