How much is too much for a hen night?

Ds2 god mother has emailed me to ask me if for her hen night I think that £180 is to much. This includes a night in a hotel, spa treatments (basic) and two meals.

whilst I think it is probably lovely I just cant justify that expense when the wedding itself will prob cost us 250 quid - hotels, clothes gift etc.

I replied that she should go ahead abut I couldnt go.
Ina nice way (!)

Did I do right. it think Idid. - help!

What heappened to a night at the boozer?

I hate these big Hen/Stag night bashes. I know of people who go away for a WEEK!! yikes I had a really nice day/evening all the hens/stags went ot Richmond park and played softball during the day - kids welcome. Then all who could go out went out and we met up in the bar where DH and I first met. Had a couple of drinks as a mixed group. then went our separate ways to various restaurants/clubs. All in all it cost about £30 - £40 max. My BF is having a hen night this thurs (ha doesn't she know some of us have to work!!!) drinks in a local bar, then a club for a boogie. Sounds just right to me

I very reluctantly agreed to one but managed to spend most of it driving round the M25 as kept missing turn offs to London, despite two "helpers. Got to Ronnie Scott's at 12:30 - left the house at 7pm. Two of my friends had a massive falling out, another lost her purse and another broke her ankle. As I was so late two went home. It was utter crap and I never wanted one in the first place.

littlemissbossy · 04/05/2004 15:42

Bl*y hell !! 2 weeks away from the kids - I'll come beetroot - nile cruise or even round the world trip is fine by me

michellefromlakeland · 12/05/2004 11:18

ooh, mutual friend has revealed that bride thinks i am being unreasonable!

sykes · 12/05/2004 11:24

Michelle, if it's at the Nutfield Priory I stayed there last week - also a member of the gym - and it's being completely refurbished (hotel and gym and spa area), which it needs. But depending on when her hen night is it could still be in a complete mess - major discount opportunity? Or good excuse not to go?

michellefromlakeland · 12/05/2004 11:24

sykes HEART

michellefromlakeland · 12/05/2004 11:26

yes sykes

its in surrey

apparetnykl I am not fair as she has done these things for everyone else and just because she is te last to get married everyone is saying its too expensive.

ams cninced it will all end up more modest

cod

Janh · 12/05/2004 11:30

btw coddy here is your blinking vegetarians thread - tech found it for you the other day.

sykes · 12/05/2004 11:32

Hope so - but it really is a mess at the moment at the hotel and spa and am sure she'd be v p'd off if she did go. Last time I ate there the food was crap too. Look forward to meeting you on Saturday.

michellefromlakeland · 12/05/2004 11:34

yes I will be really charming and tactful for a change!!

sykes · 12/05/2004 11:37

I'll try not to get absolutely plastered.

Tommy · 12/05/2004 11:52

I agree with codswallop. I was very conscious of asking people to spend lots for my hen night so I just had a party at home. My Mum and MIL supplied the food - we got champagnee out of our wedding budget and everyone brought a bottle. I hired a karaoke machine which was brilliant.
Best party I've ever been to!

coddycodcod · 14/05/2004 12:10

i read that weddings cost the guests £300 quid int eh news today

Fio2 · 14/05/2004 12:13

Only read the first post coddy but I agree it is far too much. My cousin is getting wed next week they have had numerous hen and stag nights , all very expensive. The wedding and reception are about 100 miles apart and apart from petrol, hotel room, gift, outfit etc is turning into an expensive day out to sit at someones wedding we dont even want to go....rambling, but it is soooo much money 180 quid

Janh · 29/05/2004 13:19

From today's Guardian:

Stag dos are costing me dear

Ange8 · 27/08/2004 17:13

Can anyone advise? ... just off to a hen weekend (2 nights hotel, meals and cocktails planned - so v expensive overall - but for a good friend, so worth it). Is it usual to take a gift for the "hen"?

allthegirls · 27/08/2004 17:17

Only naughty stuff! unless the person organising it has sorted all that stuff out!

notthecod · 27/08/2004 17:32

omg! have more to post about htis
went shopping wiht he hen - unrealted and she didnt realsise that people would pay 100 £ for a present
I managed to slip in " would rather spend it onthat than a hen do"
and Ihtink she got the point

vict17 · 27/08/2004 17:39

£100 for a wedding present? I only spend £25 at the most!
