i have just recieved an email from paypal asking me verify my account, my account is verified.

Is this a fake and therefore should i report it to Paypal the email address used is
[email protected]

and says
As you know, it's free to send money with PayPal. It's also a safe way to buy and sell online. That's why the more you use PayPal, the more we may stop and ask you to complete additional security steps that enable you to continue using our service.

One of these steps is to set up bank funding. Another is to accept a phone call from us that confirms your location.

Learn more about how to get 'Verified' and to build trust in the PayPal community.

Once you've completed these steps and become 'Verified' your account will no longer have limits and you'll be eligible for Seller Protection. As a verified PayPal member, if you sell items on eBay, you may be eligible to offer Buyer Protection at no additional cost.

just had the same

not sure, is it to your registered personal email address or just in your ebay messages?

southeastastra · 02/11/2006 13:49

send it to [email protected] (think that's the add) or just delete it

MissybaBANG · 02/11/2006 13:51

i would say that is definitely FAKE. you should never get emails from paypal saying that. send it to them although it may take a while for them to reply as i had something like this a while back. they did reply in the end saying it was a fake.

katzg · 02/11/2006 13:53

thanks that what i thought, this basically asks you to send them your bank details, which all sonuds a bit suss to me!

yes it's dodgy, always check that the paypal address at the top is https:/ too which means it's secure and not just http/

Any email from a money related company that asks you to verify your details will not be genuine.

No genuine financial body will ask you to verify your details in this way.

Delete this mail, do not click any links from it.

If you do want to verify, take yourself to paypal.com and log yourself in.

Twohootsandasparkler · 02/11/2006 14:08

I've just had the same email too. I deleted it to be on the safeside but it it's gone to a few of us it could be genuine??

Rhubarb · 02/11/2006 14:10

Look at the reply address, if it has no www then it is a fake. You can report this, google "reporting internet fraud" and there should be a MET office link in there, they have the webaddress to send the email to.

Send it to them and to ebay.

If in doubt it's always best to check!

Rhubarb · 02/11/2006 14:13

The link is here

wannaBe1974 · 02/11/2006 14:27

I've had the same email as well and it has my name on it whereas the fake ones generally have the "dear paypal member"

NotActuallyAMum · 02/11/2006 14:42

I'd say it's fake, I've had them before - they seem to look more and more genuine every time I get one. No-one who you have been registered with for ages should ever ask you to "verify" anything

HotterOtter · 02/11/2006 14:43

i have it too - dont think its fake

bea · 02/11/2006 15:20

i've got it too... and i just tend to ignore these things... fake or genuine!

2ShOOOOHSandAHHHHs · 02/11/2006 15:25

i got one too but just ignored it.

sunnydelight · 02/11/2006 17:01

I deleted without opening. Anything that says verify in the title gets the same treatment. There's loads of fishing going on at the moment.

madmarchflare · 02/11/2006 21:47

I have it too, DEFINATELY fake.

ANY SUSPICIOUS MAILS PURPORTING TO BE FROM PAYPAL SHOULD BE FORWARDED TO...

[email protected]

ANY SUSPICIOUS MAILS PURPORTING TO BE FROM EBAY SHOULD BE FORWARDED TO...

[email protected]

There seems to be at least one thread like this a month.

Forward any emails that look dodgy (before clicking any links in the email) and the REAL ebay/paypal will be able to confirm whether or not the email originated from them.

madmarchflare · 02/11/2006 22:22

Yep indeedy, I have just received confirmation from Paypal to say that it was NOT from them....

Skribble · 02/11/2006 22:40

Anything like that I go to my own link for paypal account and check on there.

PretendFriend · 02/11/2006 22:43

I got this email, addressed to me personally, from [email protected] - it's genuine, all the links go to authentic ebay/paypal pages.

It's not asking you to send your bank details in reply to the email, it's telling you to log-in to your paypal account if you do want to get verified and do it there.

I have stopped using paypal since I reached their credit limit for using a credit card - I'm not going to get verified because my paypal was hacked into once so I'm not giving them my bank details, but I'm assuming they're just emailing all the people who haven't used them for a while to see if they can get them back on board.

IdrisTheDragon · 02/11/2006 22:46

I got this email and I regularly use paypal. I think I will forward it to them and find out.

PretendFriend · 02/11/2006 22:50

I have forwarded mine too out of curiosity!

PretendFriend · 02/11/2006 23:08

Blimey, they never sleep at paypal - they have replied almost instantly and say yes, it is a fake

Now I have to change my password - I had enough trouble thinking of one I would remember last time!

(Of course paypal is a dot com, not a dot co dot uk, isn't it? Curses! They got me!)
