How much time do you spend on your own?

There are so many pressures today to always be doing something...working, doing stuff with dh/dp and children, extended family, seeing friends, commitees, housework...in effect doing things for other people a lot (which btw is nice).....however, I was just wondering how much time in a whole week do you actually spend in your own company, whether it be reading a book, or whatever.....in today's world do people have enough quiet time to themselves..

Very very little - DS1 has a great habit of even following me to the toilet so no peace there either. I really crave time on my own as I lived alone for 5 years before I met DH. He doesn't seem to appreciate how important it is to me!

Does sleeping count as on your own?!!!!!
If not, what's on your own?????!!!!!!

My NY resolution was to do just that, hasn't actually happened yet but think if it was making me unhappy i'd do it.

ohhh, i go to sainsburys on my own sometimes, don't think that counts though does it?

The only place I'm truly ever alone is when i have dropped Lottie off and i'm driving to work.

If weekly shopping counts, I do that on my own so 1.5 hours.
If Dh is on 'lates' then I get the evening with the kids in bed but I don't think that counts either.

So going by both of the above I don't get any!

suzywong - my commute to work is combined with the school run - 3 kids and 4 in September. I work next door to school, so get the grand total of 3 minutes....

very little time.
work 3 days, 2 days at home are with DD2. As her naps have now stopped bang goes my 2 hours with a book!
Time off work is saved for school holidays or children sick days.
DH and I very rarely go out independently, so no joy there...erm, I always go to bed at 10ish and read for an hour, but may have DH doing the same thing next to me!!- think that counts!
I use to love my own company but TBH I don't miss it. DD2 goes to preschool in September so my "me time" will increase then.

Bad luck Sonnet
And Thomcat I, personally, would categorise 'on your own, as time without any trace of childcare obligations or housework duties, so being on you own in the house with the kids asleep but the ironing/kitchen dishes/ dirty PE kits calling you is not what I, personally, mean by 'on your own'
Although curling up with a good book it pretty close

I don't class work as being on my own at all, as I am rarely in the classroom without someone (teacher or pupil) popping in and out, e-mails or phone calls going off. I do get 10 minutes drive between dropping DD at nursery and getting to work but as traffic is so heavy it isn't time for me at all really.

suzywong · 27/04/2004 14:30

OMG Forgot to clarify that I also meant paid employment / professional duties don't count either as being on your own
Sorry was way up my SAHM bum then!

Thomcat · 27/04/2004 14:31

Bless you Suzywong, i know what time on your own means really!!!! I was just knd of pointing out in my own way that i don't get any!!!!
I should make more of an effort to as I'm sure I'd love it, it's just that i don't feel unhappy with how life is so don't worry about it too much.

DP and I go out most weekends or have people over so it's not all Lottie, Lottie, Lottie and if I feel the need i'll go and read in bed or in the bath, but generally i'm pretty happy with how things are.

However, we will get plenty of time on our own when the chicks have flown the nest.
Howl ! I'm going to try and keep at least one of my boys living in spare room til he's thiry and very interested in train timetables.
