Prolific MN posting, do you admire it or pity it?

There are quite a few mn members who seem like they are on here literally all the time. Is it not a tad unhealthy to be on the internet so much?

OP posts:
lucy5 · 25/10/2006 14:05

How do you know?

Smurfgirl · 25/10/2006 14:05

Its broadband innit.

Piffle · 25/10/2006 14:06

unhealthy how exactly. Could you define and I'll consider if I am or not.

AnguaVonUberwald · 25/10/2006 14:07

Am so bored at work you wouldn't belive, its the only thing that keeps me (relativly) sane!

DumbledoresGirl · 25/10/2006 14:08

I feel nervous now that I am one of the people notenoughshoes is talking about! I am not here all the time, but the computer is on all the time and I pop in and out and add comments...

Yes I suppose being here every day is a bit sad. But then, unless you only own literally one or two pairs of shoes, I also think wanting more shoes is not healthy either!

schneebly · 25/10/2006 14:10

Same as you DG - I have the compiuter on all the time and am an online student so spend a lot of time at the computer. I tend to pop in to MN in between other things so maybe a few times in a day but never for long spells.

WitchICouldGiveUpWork · 25/10/2006 14:12

I personally admire a lot of the prolific posters-many willing to offer continued (and oft repetetive advice).
Without these people Mumsnet would not be the informative and entertaining place it is.

Twohootsandapumpkin · 25/10/2006 14:13

I wish I had time to get on here more - I love it me!!! . But yes you do see a lot of the same people on here often (lucky them I say!!).

Sometimes I get 'looks' in the evening from DH as if to say 'are you STILL on that bloody laptop' or "when do I get a go on the laptop" comments. SO, am thinking of buying him his own laptop for Xmas . That should do it.....!

JessaJackOLantern · 25/10/2006 14:15

Are you in disguise to ask this question notenoughshoes?
It's just there has been a recent spate of threads suggesting that MNers are way "sad" or give bad advice etc etc...

I neither admire nor pity...I just join in!

zippitippitoes · 25/10/2006 14:17

neither one nor the other..though I do admire people who are so selfless and can really be bothered to try and offer good well thought out constructive ideas and still have the energy to be really good fun and entertaining toboot

vitomum · 25/10/2006 14:19

the prolific posters always appear to be 'having a better time' on MN than i am. But i think that is fair. you should get more out of something the more you put in to it. They also tirelessly doll out the advice which is valuable to everyone (usually). so to answer the OP i neither admire nor pity it, it is all part of rich tapestry of MN life.

AnguaVonUberwald · 25/10/2006 14:26

Also seems that you need to post quite a bit initially, to get known, (at least thats the impression I get)

Blossomhowl · 25/10/2006 14:30

Seriously? I think it's sad to spend say all day on here.
Much rather catch up with real people.

NannyStar · 25/10/2006 14:30

There are mumsnetters who need a bit of adult conversation in their day and so no, it's no different that having real life friends around to chat really. As long as the kids are happy and still getting mums attention, who cares?!?!

DumbledoresGirl · 25/10/2006 15:17

Good point NannyStar. I don't have friends (well, none living locally anyway) so if I spend an hour a day here chatting, I reckon that is the equivalent of many people having a friend round for coffee every morning. It is the reason I come here anyway as I don't often need advice myself, just miss the day to day chatting that close friendships would bring.

So that accounts for one hour each day. Now, what about the times I spend 3 hours here continuously (usually in the evenings when there is nothing I want to watch on tv?!)

TheDivineLiliLaTigresse · 25/10/2006 15:19

think notenoughshoes is looking to wind us up.....

2shoescreepingthroughblood · 25/10/2006 15:21

thankd god they are on here
who would I talk to if
they weren't

LadyUndetrun · 25/10/2006 15:21

i think its fantastic that there are people here who seem to bend over backwards to help total strangers with anything from 'where to buy...?' questions to specific special needs help.

bloody good on 'em i say!

zippitippitoes · 25/10/2006 15:23

logging on and seeing a sprinkling of familiar posters going about their daily business is very pleasant like being in a small town

MorticiaRed · 25/10/2006 15:24

You must be on quite a lot yourself if you have spotted these prolific posters!!

lulumama · 25/10/2006 15:24

i post a lot...i really couldn;t care less if i am pitied or admired.... i am a SAHM...if i didn't 'talk' on here...i could go 24 hours with adult conversation!

and i enjoy reading differing opinions..its food for thought and i have learnt a lot! about all sorts of things i would probably never have contemplated...!

LadyUndetrun · 25/10/2006 15:26

and i may be on here too much, but its no-strings, (largely)intelligent conversation and debate on any subject at all, accessible any time and not requiring you to remember anyones birthdays or anything...

well, its a lot of things, but i think MN is fab and prolific posters are most of what makes it so. IMO.

SamhainWitch · 25/10/2006 15:26

I live here. 'Real Life' is just something I do in my spare time.

Orlando · 25/10/2006 15:27

Lots of us go through phases, I think. I'm on here loads for a short spell in between work commitments, then disappear for a month or so. To me the time I spend on here is really valuable-- when I'm tied up with work I'm totally preoccupied with that, but when come back to mn I'm back focusing on being a parent and all those issues again. It works for me.

foxinsocks · 25/10/2006 15:29

I go through phases on being here all the time and then, when I'm busy, not being here at all.

Also, like DG, if we are at home, we leave the computer on all day (largely because of dh's work) so often, I'll just pop in and then out again. It probably looks like you've been on it all day but if you're just nipping in for 5 minutes every hour or so, it's really not that much.
