Hicksville > London ... right or wrong?

Rather than hijack the other thread, I'll start one of my own.

I'm thinking about moving to London from the provincial town where I now live. My children are nearly 13 (dd) and 10 (ds), so if we moved in the summer ds would start Year 6 at a new primary school and dd would start Year 9 at a new secondary school. They'll both be going to state schools.

I don't like the idea of uprooting them, BUT there are lots of good reasons for the move, for them as well as me.

We're looking at moving into Camden LEA, and I am told the schools are very good. I also think as the children get older there will be many more opportunities for them educationally and socially in London. My sister and brother both live in north London and I would dearly love to be nearer to them, and so would the kids. Plus my mum wants to move in with us on a trial basis - she is very close to the children and more importantly is very good for them, and would be my general factotum in terms of childcare.

And of course the work opportunities for me would be stratospherically better than they are where I now am.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has made a big move with kids at a similar age, and what impact it had on them. Of course a lot comes down to personality, and I know it would be hard for them to adjust at first, but any advice or experience would be most welcome.

Thanks!

aww thanks maomao - aren't you lovely!

my mum has made quite a good physical recovery but she is suffering the mental/emotional after-effects of the stroke - apparently depression is very common after a stroke

I didn't mean to imply that everyone in NW3 is snooty, not at all. But I did wonder if living in the one block of council flats in the middle of such a moneyed area would automatically make me a Hampstead chav if you know what I mean!

How did the house viewing go, sm (yours I mean)?

maomao · 02/06/2004 17:05

You need to remember that I'm a States-girl. What is "chav," if you please?

spacemonkey · 02/06/2004 17:07

a chav is the UK equivalent of the sort of people who appear as guests on the jerry springer show

i thought you were at the 1 o clock hampstead club maomao - back already ... ?

the islington people have viewed my house and are now lunching and hopefully discussing how much they love it

I'm glad that your mum is recovering well, 'tho the depression has got to be hard.

Are you seriously considering doing home ed? What have you dug up in your research about it?

I hope that the Islington people like your house! (But it would have been better for ME if you were here --- it's all about me, you see.... Seriously, you would be about three blocks from me)

Yes, I got back quickly from the one o'clock club (we met at 11 a.m.) because I could run faster on my big feet. (Although, technically, I guess I would be SLOWER due to the drag my feet would cause. Hmmm.... I'll ponder that later.)

Hooray!

ScummyMummy · 02/06/2004 22:36

Wow! How exciting, spacemonkey. All fingers crossed for you.

Davros · 02/06/2004 22:58

So Spacemonkey, Islington house sounds big enough for mother and baby group........ You're right, Hampstead proper is mostly moneyed although famous for its liberals and arty/acting crowd. Now, if you'd gone to St John's Wood where I, the snooty one, feel like shouting "you may be rich but you've got nee taste!" at the top of my lungs, well...... and they seriously DO double park ROllers in SJW!

lou33 · 02/06/2004 23:33

She's gone away overnight AGAIN!

suzywong · 02/06/2004 23:37

Those evangelical singsongs certainly last well in to the evening dont they?

lou33 · 02/06/2004 23:42

I know, and now she has those bellringing classes she has signed up to as well!

suzywong · 02/06/2004 23:42

The donger masterclass? Oh yes, she certainly is very keen

maomao · 02/06/2004 23:42

I think we need an icon for a lurker who's laughing their head off

Janh · 02/06/2004 23:53

And another for a lurker who is totally out of touch and completely baffled.

lou33 · 02/06/2004 23:56

She certainly loves making those clangers waggle.
