looking at safety of babies is hospital beds when feeding - did you have cotsides/bedguards or nothing?

i must of had mine at your hosp mears, with the blue tomy gaurds! lol

Berries · 16/10/2006 10:44

None. Also, the one time the mw took dd1 so I could get some rest (loooong labour & no sleep for 2 days) I woke up to find her beside me FACE DOWN in her cot. It was 11 yrs ago, but surely if I knew better they should have done. Sadly was too worn out to say anything.

mrspink27 · 16/10/2006 11:35

no bedguard, West Sussex

IdrisTheDragon · 16/10/2006 11:38

There weren't any bed guards with either DS (nearly 3) or DD (1). With DS a midwife tucked him into bed with me as we were having a bad night (and we both slept very nicely ).

hana · 16/10/2006 11:40

no bed guards for me either - fell asleep with dd3 feeding her and midwives didn't bat an eye

IdrisTheDragon · 16/10/2006 11:40

This was in the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, Herts

belgo · 16/10/2006 11:42

The problem with cot sides is that they provide a false sense of security. Cotsides often are badly fitted, and aren't necessarily designed for the bed they're used on. There is sometimes a gap between the bed and cot side, or they simply aren't attached properly. They can be the cause of injuries.

2Babies0Bumps · 16/10/2006 11:45

same hosp for both.
bed had pull up metal side rails. baby could easily go thru. mw took ds and put him in his perspex cot thing when i started dropping off once.
was offered a clip on cot but it never arrived.

MrsRecycle · 16/10/2006 11:49

Had haemoraging after section (8 weeks ago) and got one of those new cots with the removable sides. Excellent for putting ds1 in and out easily but no storage and a night mare to move. When I fed ds1 in a chair at night I dropped him

lemonaid · 16/10/2006 11:52

Nothing at Kingston.

Nome · 16/10/2006 12:13

Nothing offered at the Rosie, Cambridge, but I was on and off the ward within four hours. I was encouraged to have dd tucked in next to me though.

MeAndMyBoy · 16/10/2006 12:18

Didn't have anything and wasn't told where or where not to feed. Nothing mentioned about co-sleeping either.

bctmum · 16/10/2006 12:32

beds need to be double size & longer.

bctmum · 16/10/2006 12:33

meant to add - that I co-slept in the hospital (non uk) & it was very uncomfortable as bed too narrow & short. I was sooo pleased to go home.

harpsichordcarrion · 16/10/2006 12:36

nothing. it was a PITA. I used my big beany pillow to wedge the baby in (both times, as it happens).
the mw's told me I must NOT under any circs have the baby in bed with me. must be in the bassinet to sleep.
luckily I was in a room by myself for most of the time so I could do what I liked
(thi swas the JR in Oxford btw)

LucyJu · 16/10/2006 12:42

No bed guards either time (2000 and 2005). Nevertheless, was put under a lot of pressure to co-sleep. Always terrified that I would roll over and they would fall out of bed. Did almost all feeds in bed for dd1. It was a bit frowned upon when I started getting out of bed to feed dd2, even though I found sitting on a chair with a pillow over my lap the msot comfortable way to feed. C/S both times.

WeaselMum · 16/10/2006 12:57

nothing offered to me at all. One midwife insisted I feed ds lying down in the middle of the night and said she would be back to check I hadn't fallen asleep. She never came back.

orangina · 16/10/2006 13:09

Dd was born in 2005 at St Mary's Paddington, London, no bed guards. Cots were those plastic boxes on wheels (basically). There was a giant and noisy 4am incident while I was there when a lady at the end of our ward dropped her baby out of the bed (quite high!) on to the floor... within seconds, she was screaming, the baby was (thankfully) screaming, all the other babies were screaming (delightful ward of I think 8 of us...), and the midwives pretty cross.... "I TOLD you not to keep your baby in bed with you....". The woman in question had had a section, had english very much as a second language and it all felt pretty surreal. Who was to blame for that? Couldn't work it out myself, especially as a 1st time mum of a 3 day old up in SCBU, hormones all over the place, at 4am....

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 16/10/2006 13:12

Colchester General October 2005

Notices plastered everywhere saying NO to feeding in bed. Had to be upright and alert or on the chair.

Was not impressed and then i wonder why I never managed to crack BF - YET AGAIN!

mumandlovingit · 16/10/2006 14:09

im pretty sure that the hospital here wont let the baby sleep in the bed with you.im sure its got to be in the 'fishtank as i call it' plastic thing!

i thought all the beds had sides on?

Kif · 16/10/2006 14:19

I think I might have had an integral one to the bed on one side - it wasn't so much a guard as something to hold on to if you were trying to hoik yourself sitting from lying/getting up.

No special one

mears · 17/10/2006 19:26

I am obviously on a hiding to nothing here. Looks like we will just have to stick to Tomy ones. I am so surprised at the lack of bedguards. I know lots of hospitals use the clip on cots that attach to the beds but none of you have mentioned them .

When I was 1st transferred to the ward aftre having dd I was in a bed with a cot on wheels. BUT the mw noticed that given my height (4ft 11in) I found it a struggle to get into bed esp aftre the birth let alone struggle to get dd out of her cot.
I was then given a cot that attached to the side of my bed. Much easier for feeds, cuddles and general access and made me feel closer to dd as well..

BTW we were encouraged to feed in bed. BTW I had dd at royal bolton maternity unit. May be worth checking where they obtained these cots from..?

shhhh · 17/10/2006 22:33

just read your last post mears......

I was given one that attached to the side of my bed..!!! .

evilanniedividedin2byalargeaxe · 17/10/2006 22:38

With dd1 I had nothing. With dd2 I had bedsides, which was great as I had a section and found it really difficult with drip, catheter, stitches etc to lean over and pick her out of the crib, so I tucked her in next to me.

With dd3 (different hospital) I had a bed with electronic up, down, head up, feet up etc controls but no sides.
