Glamour mum or scruff bag?

Recently had a weird conversation with my friend who bought me make-up for my birthday in Feb. She asked me why I don't like it and I said I do. This then sparked a debate about why I do not wear it. I see my friend at the school gates and after school 2 or 3 times a week.

the point is, I get myself and DS up for school, I get breakfast and brush my hair etc etc and take him to school. Friend thought I was a little weird because I don't spent 30 mins in front of the mirror applying make-up and straightening hair etc etc. I do this when I have a night out or go someone nice.

So basically she has made me feel like I dont take pride in my appearence, my clothes are clean and my hair is brushed. What is wrong with that.

So what kind of mum are you, glamour, scruff bag (like me apparently) or someone in middle.

BTW suspect friend on PMT

sorry....pooter jammed and i posted twice

I'm probably in the middle, tending towards glamour(!). I don't bother with make up when taking dd to school as I rarely see anyone but I always put on the war paint when going out elsewhere.

I have to confess, there was a time many moons ago, when I wouldn't even go downstairs in the morning without the full works but in my defence I'd say that some of us need more help in the beauty stakes than others. I always envy those who look glam in pj's and bedhair!

tamum · 17/04/2004 13:58

I have had to revise my normal look today. It's dd's 6th birthday party and she has put in a special request that I wear my red velevt top (devore thing from Monsoon, can't quite bring myself to go that far on a Saturday afternoon), or my pink cardigan from Jigsaw. So that's what I'm wearing. She's clearly mortified by my usual style

I must be a scruff bag as I don't wear make up (unless I'm going on a rare night-out). I do shower and wash my hair every morning so I am at least clean if a little scruffily put together. My hair either hangs loose or gets put straight into a clip/band, either way it is most definitley not 'styled' !

I am pretty anal about my eyebrows and keeping them tidy. My clothes are rarely ironed but always clean (toddler mealtimes permitting !).

So, I guess I'm 75% scruff-bag.

bobs · 17/04/2004 14:27

Total scruff bag, but that makes it all the more fun when I get dressed up to go out at night, which isn't that often. Go dog-walking straight after dropping kids off at school, then in summer am in the garden a lot - gardening, not sunbathing! Got some v odd looks when I wore a dress to school once, and have been known to leave the house in slippers.
However I was like this before I got married, so DH can't say I let myself go.
Not a hairy person luckily so only shave for hols or going to the swimming baths - not bad for 44 but have to dye my hair.

bossykate · 17/04/2004 14:37

depends mainly on my state of mind. the happier and more upbeat i feel the more i will tend to glamour and vice versa.

oiseau · 17/04/2004 15:08

I think I am an in-betweeny. I don't look "right" without mascara and eyeliner so it goes on every morning but otherwise I think I am a bit of a scruff bag. I have v unruly hair and have to spend at least half an hour blow drying it if I want it to look nice - most of the time I can't be bothered so just look mess. I would love to be one of those women who is always neat and tidy no matter what the occasion and whose lipstick stays on all day?? How do you do that? Mine lasts about two seconds.

Soulfly · 17/04/2004 15:14

scruffbag me, have been known not to brush my hair if i am late, just scrape it back into a sort of bun, but schools only two mins away. So i can quicly run back home. he he.

make up tends to irritate me.

marthamoo · 17/04/2004 15:16

Lipstick...what is it with lipstick, it only lasts a few minutes with me too!

Soulfly · 17/04/2004 15:17

But the kids are always tidy. had to add that.

Soulfly · 17/04/2004 15:18

i know marth, or you've ended up wiping your mouth forgetting you got it on, and end up with it half way up your face, lol.

oiseau · 17/04/2004 15:30

I think you either have "sticky lipstick lips" or you don't. Its genetic.

Demented · 17/04/2004 22:22

I'm a scruffbag. I shower every day and wash my hair every second day but rarely dry it, if I do dry it I usually straighten it too. I very rarely wear makeup, usually only for a night out (take it off the next morning in the shower) and certainly wouldn't dream of getting made up to do the school run. I usually wear jeans & t-shirt with trainers, boots with a chunky heel or docs. I do have a leather coat that my Mum bought me and feel really smart in it so generally sling that on top of whatever I am wearing. I shave armpits and legs for swimming or wearing sleeveless things or no tights, my eyebrows are badly in need of taming and I need to get the Jolen facial bleach out.

I did however dry my hair today and put makeup on!!!

littlemissbossy · 17/04/2004 22:42

depends on my mood/what day it is ... monday always look a scruff bag but tuesday is better ... woken up from the weekend look. Always, always wear makeup, not loads, 5 min routine. When i'm at home, always wear jeans but when i go into city/out with my mum (usually Friday) make extra effort particularly as she is of the perfect hair, co-ordinated suit brigade.

xoz · 17/04/2004 22:54

Scruffy is the only way to go.
I get half an hour each morning to shower dress and do hair etc before dh goes to work. so apart from brushing my hair, occasionally remember to put on some moisturiser so my skin doesn't feel like its overstretched and that's about it.
I wear make up if I'm going out somewhere in the evening (I've worn it 4 times in three and a half years!!!) Most of my clothes come from ASDA or Tesco and consist of jeans and long sleeve t-shirts mostly. But I've always been like this. I never wore make up even when I was a working in a professional office.
I do understand though that it can be a big self esteem boost for some people to put that bit of effort in each day. I wish it mattered to me...dh would probably like it. but it doesn't do anything for me and thats okay too i reckon.

Janh · 17/04/2004 22:55

I never got on with lipstick. It doesn't fit me.

Slinky · 17/04/2004 23:02

Forgot to add in my post - my main reason for wearing some make-up is down to the fact I suffer from rosacea.

So, it's vitally important that I moisturise my skin daily, otherwise I could have "flare-ups". Most of the time my skin (nose, chin and part of cheek) is just red - other times it may flare-up into small spots etc.

Obviously this makes me self-conscious so for me, going out with putting some make-up is like going out without clothes. In the last couple of months, I have had 2 people - a woman at the school and the Lollipop man both comment on my skin.

If I had perfect skin, then probably I wouldn't be so bothered about applying make-up.

pol2004 · 17/04/2004 23:04

Elizabeth arden 8 hour cream is about the full extent of my glamourising.............it works wonders tho'.

Ghosty · 18/04/2004 02:21

I am in between too ...
It depends on what I am doing but I shower and wash my hair everyday. I cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day.

But, for example, today I am at home, no plans to do anything but potter. So I didn't dry my hair, am wearing no make up and am wearing baggy tracky bums and t-shirt.

If I go out to see people then I blow dry my hair, wear nicer clothes (not that I fit into much yet ) and wear make-up ... My hair didn't see a hairdryer for the first 8 weeks of DD's life and I hated it ... now she sits and watches me dry it (can't teach them too early IMO )

I like to wear make up and have nice (ish) hair because it makes me feel more confident ...

toddlerbob · 18/04/2004 02:37

No makeup for me, but I use tinted moisturiser with a SPF so it kills two birds with one stone. I comb my hair everyday, but that's about the extent of it. I have a bath or shower every day too.

I am a totally different size after having ds and so only have a few nice things that fit. All the rest of my clothes that fit are from 10 years ago. I choose which clothes based entirely on how likely I am to meet someone I know. Then again I do the same with ds's clothes too.
