Glamour mum or scruff bag?

Recently had a weird conversation with my friend who bought me make-up for my birthday in Feb. She asked me why I don't like it and I said I do. This then sparked a debate about why I do not wear it. I see my friend at the school gates and after school 2 or 3 times a week.

the point is, I get myself and DS up for school, I get breakfast and brush my hair etc etc and take him to school. Friend thought I was a little weird because I don't spent 30 mins in front of the mirror applying make-up and straightening hair etc etc. I do this when I have a night out or go someone nice.

So basically she has made me feel like I dont take pride in my appearence, my clothes are clean and my hair is brushed. What is wrong with that.

So what kind of mum are you, glamour, scruff bag (like me apparently) or someone in middle.

BTW suspect friend on PMT

try to be glamour Mum.. yearn to be imaculate in cream cahmere.

SEXGODDESS · 16/04/2004 13:37

I can't believe how many of you say your scruffy -I bet you're all stunning and don't need make up.

I do my hair every other day (wash, condition, blowdry, straighten). I cleanse, clarify and moisturise my face/neck every morning and apply make up including lipstick and mascara whether I'm working or not. Clothes are all clean and pressed (jeans, tshirt, boots for home usually or trousers, top/shirt or suit for work) and still manage to feel like I haven't bothered.

wobblyknicks · 16/04/2004 13:39

Yes, I'm really very glamourous and spend two hours in front of the mirror in the morning to look so good!! (I've just got to hope essbee doesn't read this now and tell everyone the truth!!)

tamum · 16/04/2004 13:55

I would have said scruffbag when I saw the title, but I do wear make-up. To give you an idea I am currently clad in jeans, fleece hooded top and red Kickers. I have got quite a pretty top from Toast on, but you can hardly see it. My make-up only takes about 30 seconds- moisturiser (not that I count that, it's essential at my age ), bit of kohl, mascara and blusher and that's your lot really. It's the ageing academic look

scoobysnax · 16/04/2004 14:07

I am currently all out in persuit of glamour and in rejection of mumsiness...and it is costing me a lot of money...

It's got to be colour coordinated and new clothes, matching accessories and heels whenever possible. Styled and coloured hair courtesy of T&G, and some minimal make up. This is the most glamorous stage of my life to date - probably all down to the insecurity of getting older!

melsy · 16/04/2004 14:13

I get laughed at for my "Carrie" ness IFKWIM. Went to the park with friends the Sunday and wore high heels, but I dont care as it makes me feel good. I HAVE to get made up and glammed up , make up only takes 15mins, & I feel like a different person. Hair goes up if to tired to wash it. I say sod them if people dont like it when Im on scruff bag day !!!!

I am extreme , if you saw me now at home youd all go BLUERCH ; greasy hair, yesterdays make up, old clothes, not bathed (yet!!!).Sounds revolting I am ashamed!!! But will be transformed later, have a glamorous evening planned with my sister and friends and cant wait.

Nutcracker · 16/04/2004 14:15

I think i'm an in between. I do wear make up nearly every day. Can't seem to get it right at the mo though, i either look to pale, or like i've been tangoed.
I do my hair too, either tied up or blow dried and left down. If i'm going anywhere special then i straighten it.

Anyone know if the Body shop still do free make overs ????

melsy · 16/04/2004 14:17

I think I agree with scoobysnax, Ive gone mad on getting dressed up and groovy. Just dont want to feel like a mumsy, helps with my final dregs of PND!!!

Wasnt there a discusssion about mums who look glam being a bit dim/stupid/not a good mum ??? That was upsetting, I know its the reverse to what you have said bouncy, you cant win either way your doomed!!! but I was concerened as I am not like the way a person like me is described.

Crunchie · 16/04/2004 14:42

I lurch from one side to another! For a normal day at work I will remember to brush hair, or wash it and leave it wet, throw on clean clothes (jeans and T shirt) and that is it. My beauty regime is perfume, deodrant and moisturiser. If I have a meeting I will wear nicer clothes - clean jeans and heels! And do makeup, usually enroute (on the train). Going out I try to glam up a bit more.

However I got the best compliment the other day at a meeting I was told I couldn't be old enough to have a couple of kids She genuinly thought I was about 26 I am 34, nearly 35!

moominmama86 · 16/04/2004 14:49

Am inbetween but am trying to be a bit less of an old ratbag as I know it makes me FEEL so much better if I'm not looking as if I've just dragged myself from the bottom of the linen basket!

I think it's because where I used to live in London there were loads of 'yummy mummies' - of which I was most assuredly not one - but I always felt like such an old trout next to them and resolved that just because I was now someone's mum didn't mean I had to look like someone's great-great-auntie Doris.

Having said that, I'm currently doing a pretty good impression of Frida Kahlo, eyebrow-wise, and my moustache definitely needs serious excavation work

Angeliz · 16/04/2004 16:16

I'm a bit in the middle.
I do out make up on every morning! (Not lots!!).
I used to remember watching my mam doing it and me saying,"but mam we're not GOING anywhere".

Oh God i'm turning into my mother!!!

As for clothes, i have recently bought a few skirts as i'd love to dress more feminine but i am in jeans nearly every day!!

nightowl · 16/04/2004 18:15

i go from one extreme to another...some days its no makeup, tie hair back and chuck on combats. if im going to work ile put makeup on, brush my hair and dress nicer, if im going out its the full works...takes about 3 hours to get ready. have just been relieved of £80 by my hairdresser aswell (the things i do to try and look younger)

motherinferior · 16/04/2004 19:14

I suspect I am quite appallingly scruffy. Haven't worn makeup for years, and never ever ever wear shoes with heels. I try for an arty/boho look but suspect this is just scrufferama.

I do dye my hair and my eyelashes, and pluck my eyebrows, and shave my legs and armpits in my daily shower...

Vee33 · 16/04/2004 19:18

Scruffy, but I'm feeling under pressure from the school mums to put on kitten heels and make up.

grumpyzebra · 16/04/2004 19:51

100% scruff bag here. But I was pre children, too. Doesn't bother me now & doubt it ever will.

squirmyworm · 16/04/2004 19:56

revoltingly unadulterated and unadorned scruff bag - the clothes I wear should make me cringe but they're too darn comfortable....

HiddenSpirit · 16/04/2004 20:18

Mainly scruff bag here although I do need to wet my hair every day to get all the sticky up bits to stay down (or if I'm not at work and doing school run I shove my baseball cap on ).

Occasionally put make up on and hunt my "nice" clothes out but mainly live in trackies/jeans/baggies & t-shirts unless at work where I have to be respectable

Lisa78 · 16/04/2004 20:20

depends what day it is really! Today am scruff bag cos its been pouring it down and I have been walking outside a lot, other days I make a bit more effort, some days a lot less! I find it quite annoying that if I have no makeup on, someone invariably tells me I'm not looking very well! Charming

JJ · 16/04/2004 20:23

Total scruff. I became a parent as a student and never changed styles.

jac34 · 16/04/2004 20:39

It depends on my mood and whether I'm going to work or not. Wear smartish trousers for work and jeans or combats on days off.I bother to blow dry, sometimes straighten my hair on days off, but always pinned up for work or when it's raining.Have put on loads of weight since having DS's(5years ago), but it doesn't bother me too much and like to think I still make an effort to look good.
There is a mother at our school gates who looks the spit of Jeniffer Lopez, and just as glam, also my DS's teacher is a real babe and looks very young and slim even though I've been told she's 30.

Posey · 16/04/2004 22:19

Somewhere in the middle I think.
Wear very little makeup, but have recently had a decent haircut for the first time in years which improves the look slightly.
Really depends on where I'm going, what the weathers like (if its cold its a pair of jeans and a big sweater) and how clean ds has been during his meals (often have yogurt splattered on me)
Must say this warmer weather improves things as my spring and summer clothes are generally smarter than my winter ones.

Slinky · 16/04/2004 22:26

I'm a bit in the middle too!

Have to wash my hair daily followed by a quick blow-dry. I save the "straightening" for evenings out/weekends - still haven't mastered doing it quickly.

Have to wear a little make-up - always moisturiser, followed by concealer, mascara and a little "lippy".

Generally dressed in jeans/black trousers with cotton jersey tops or shirts.

deegward · 16/04/2004 22:28

Would like to say glam - shower, wash hair, shave legs, make up everyday - but compared to my nieghbour just look plain scruffy, she always has the right clothes on, and the right look. aaarrgghh

collision · 16/04/2004 22:31

Scruffbag....unfortunately. Would love to look glam but cant be bothered unless I am working! Jeans and t-shirts. Should make more of an effort but it takes SOOOOO long!
