Someone "crossed" dd forehead today in Boots, what is your opinion?

lilymolly · 07/10/2006 18:57

Was in boots today with dd in pram, an older lady came to admire dd as they do! and she had her daughter with her, about 30ish who had learning difficulties (politically correct?)sorry if not.

Anyway, this lady got chatting and I was taking to her daughter and asking her name etc, being pleasant as you do, and anyway the older lady was very nice, and as she walked away she licked her finger and did a cross on dd forehead and said something like " god bless you child" or along the lines of this...

I was a little bit shocked but anyway walked away and got on with shopping. But it got me thinking, although I am not religous at all, I did not really get offended as I knew she meant well, but when I told dp, he thought it a little offensive , he is anti religion.
So I thought I would ask what you would have done in my position?? Not asking for religious/non religous debate, just your thoughts on how you would have reacted.

yeah, a woman on the tescos checkout said she's pray for me just before dd was born

could clearly see the Mark of Ken on my forehead.

Quote of the month:

"I don't like the licking" by PointyfangedWeredog

TarkaTheHeadlessOtter · 07/10/2006 19:48

i was in waitrose and a woman came over and started to chat to me about my two youngest 'how many have i got''five''how lovely did i want more?' 'yes'
she then proceeded to say how lucky i was and she was sure i had a faith (i dont) i said not...then she went on and on about getting one. I lapped it all up ( post natal and vulnerable) I quite liked it and i did like her. DP however was shocked at the whole thing and thought it offensive.
Who is right?
I would have been taken aback at the actions of your lady but probably quite liked it tbh!

lilymolly · 07/10/2006 19:58

Dont get me wrong, the word offended used by me earlier was perhaps a little strong, I was touched really that she cared enough to do that to dd, and yeah the licking of the finger is no different to someone kissing her on the cheek. In fact the more I think about it, the more I am just smiling, especially when I read some of your comments!! The face dd pulled afterwards was cracking though, she looked up at me with her big blue eyes as if to say, who was that mummy who rubbed spit on my head!!!!
I think I am having just a little bit of mothers instinct really, when someone touches your child in such an intimate way like that, I think you automatically think hmmmmmmmmmm?

OP posts:
GreenSlashedSleeves · 07/10/2006 20:00

Of course you do. That instinct is there to protect them, there's nothing wrong with that. I think your response has been very balanced and reasonable - and it's given the rest of us the opportunity to think about this sort of encounter in a new light too.

lanismum · 07/10/2006 20:00

would not have cared about the religious bit, but the licking bit? gross! id have had to have got some antibacterial spray and scrubbed the babys head

lilymolly · 07/10/2006 20:00

and also If honest I felt a little bit sorry for her, cos her daughter was obviously severley disabled, and I thought she looked like she had the patience of a saint bless her.....
Oh god I feel guilty for even feeling weird now

lilymolly · 07/10/2006 20:01

No Twiglet tell me why

Why is the sign of the cross offensive

If you think it is meaningless and powerless then fine - it means nothing

How does it OFFEND, if it is meaningless?

nutcracker · 07/10/2006 20:04

I am not religious at all and so I think I would have been a bit shocked and uncomfortable but not said anything, as she obviously meant well.

pointyfangedWeredog · 07/10/2006 20:04

That was a serious comment you know, GreenSS

To be honest, I wouldn't like any kissing going on with my baby either unless by a well-known person.

Rowlers · 07/10/2006 20:06

All I can think of now is...

"Lady licky finger" said in slightly "oriental" accent.

SORRY

lilymolly · 07/10/2006 20:06

oh oh do we have to get into a moral debate ladies?? really did not want to get anyone involved in argument, or is this how all these type of threads go?

moaningpaper · 07/10/2006 20:10

lillymolly I've just cleaned up sweetcorn shit for the last 20 minutes

It's quite FUN to have a little bit of banter to make sure that my brain is still actually functioning to some degree

Or is that just me?

TwigTwoolett · 07/10/2006 20:11

SoupDragon · 07/10/2006 20:13

DS2 would have spontaneously combusted had someone done it to him.

lilymolly · 07/10/2006 20:14

Oh sorry, I just hate it when threads like this turn into arguments ifswim cos I started this all off.
feel free to banter away

moaningpaper · 07/10/2006 20:14

I just want to get into a fight with Twiglett

everyone else can leave

TwigTwoolett · 07/10/2006 20:14

MP the sign of the cross would be offensive if applied to a child of a different religion I am sure

I have hazy recollections of sunday school old testament passages where people got burned for refusing to bow to another god ..I think

lilymolly · 07/10/2006 20:15

does she keep changin her name, is that her below? I like a good argument too!!

OP posts:
TwigTwoolett · 07/10/2006 20:15

"I just want to get into a fight with Twiglett

everyone else can leave"

bring it on you daily mail reader (moaningpaper .. geddit?)

shimmy21 · 07/10/2006 20:15

Just out of interest, how would you have felt if the lady had performed a ritual from a non-Christian religion - Hindu or Muslim let's say? (not that I can think off the cuff of an example)

Would that have offended anyone more?

moaningpaper · 07/10/2006 20:16

I don't see why Twiglett

My children have been blessed by various people of various religions, as have I

I don't find that offensive, I find it greatly moving

lilymolly · 07/10/2006 20:16

ignore last comment, must have read name wrong earlier.....

Blandmum · 07/10/2006 20:16

Don't think he is still in buisness now though.
