How did you choose your child's name?

Our little boy is named Tobias John and is called Toby. I knew that if we had a boy I would want for his middle name to be John as it's my Dad's name. The first name was more difficult.

We have an unusual surname so we wanted for the baby's first name to be recognisable and easy to spell. Traditional but not very popular. We also wanted to give him a long name and use a shortened version so that he had some flexibility. My name is Katherine but I was called Kathy as a child. I switched to Katherine when I left school and always appreciated that I had that flexibility in my name.

We looked through lots of name books and were trying to decide between Thomas and Tobias when someone gave me the book Miss Garnett's Angel about Tobias and the angel. I then remembered the Verrochio painting at the National Gallery of Tobias and the Angel and the name shot to the top of the list. We still waited to see our baby before we made a definite decision but he was a Toby as soon as we saw him.

We had to pick something Irish to go with the surname but not too impossible to spell, in case we move to Canada someday... poor lad if he'd been saddled with Oisin or Diarmuid! We chose Brendan, the Kerry saint who sailed to Newfoundland before Columbus, in a leather boat... we have both Newfie and Kerry family connections too, so it was perfect. I love telling the story! And older people always approve, saying it's a lovely traditional name. If we have a girl someday I love Katherine, but would call her Kate...

What's weird about the name Jacob? I think it's lovely, which is why ds3 is called that.

I suddenly heard about loads of Lilys when we had decided on it, I wanted something slightly usual. I have spent my whole life being Jenni H never just Jenni, so I wanted E to be a bit different. But as it is I think Evie is more popular than we realised!
Oh and we chose Evie as her proper name because we didn't like any of the names we it could be short for, and we wanted an Evie not an Eve!

My ex chose dd name as we agreed if we had a dd then hed chose the name, if we had a ds then id chose. She was named after his late grandmother.

Hello everyone, my ds was named Thomas after sooo much thought - I can't believe it took so long to arrive at such a traditional name, but as soon as he arrived we both agreed absolutely that it suited him down to the ground!

I wanted classic traditional girls names for my two so dd1 is named after the famous heroine of a classic literary novel and dd2 after my favourite English actress. Both names are very popular.

I don't dislike Arden at all but it is a famous perfume house!

Arden is also a very poor housing estate in the south of Glasgow, AND a posh enclave near Loch Lomond in north Glasgow.
