How did you choose your child's name?

Our little boy is named Tobias John and is called Toby. I knew that if we had a boy I would want for his middle name to be John as it's my Dad's name. The first name was more difficult.

We have an unusual surname so we wanted for the baby's first name to be recognisable and easy to spell. Traditional but not very popular. We also wanted to give him a long name and use a shortened version so that he had some flexibility. My name is Katherine but I was called Kathy as a child. I switched to Katherine when I left school and always appreciated that I had that flexibility in my name.

We looked through lots of name books and were trying to decide between Thomas and Tobias when someone gave me the book Miss Garnett's Angel about Tobias and the angel. I then remembered the Verrochio painting at the National Gallery of Tobias and the Angel and the name shot to the top of the list. We still waited to see our baby before we made a definite decision but he was a Toby as soon as we saw him.

Can a grandmother join in....? My daughter has just named her second child Diesel - I thought it was a joke till I saw the birth certificate. The only ones who were stunned were the grandparents - all four of us. The first one is Axel - maybe they'll grow up to run a breaker's yard

Hi Granite, those are unusual names but not unheard of. I just read an article about the singer Toni Braxton and one of her boys is named Diesel. It's the name of a very trendy line of clothing too which could help to explain its increasing popularity. I've known quite a few Axels too, usually German or Austrian but so many names are becoming international these days.

I'm sure that when they start school no one will think twice about their names. Do they have more traditional middle names?

I should add that Toni Braxton's other boy is called Denim. She obviously wanted them to be different!

Not anything to do with the actor/thingy Vin Diesel?

lou33 · 21/04/2004 12:42

Freckle, lol @ "actor/thingy"!

Freckle · 21/04/2004 13:25

Well, I didn't want to insult any genuine actors out there

dis · 21/04/2004 14:00

I know a hairdresser who called her daughter Lucky Pancake (Pancake 'cos she was born on Pancake day).

smellymelly · 21/04/2004 14:23

LOL Granite. You are right they are quite rare... Reminds me of Vin Diesel, and Axel Foley!!!

Davan Sherise

Davan is pronounced DAVEN. Davan is Celtic and the feminine of DAVID, named after her uncle who killed in an accident.

Sherise is a variation of Cherish, picked by DH and also the S makes up a letter in his licence plate. Actually meant to be a joke which DD might not like when she grows up.

Hi to all the new members(lots of you as well), been away a while, but at least I can easily join this thread. Got some reading to do.

Janh · 22/04/2004 20:05

Hi, Gen! Nice to see you!

Was telling dd2 about Davan yesterday (the eyes! the hair! etc), and was wondering how to pronounce it, but still not clear - is it

Dav-en

or Dave-en

????

GenT · 22/04/2004 20:14

hi, she tires my arm as I type, second A sounds lie an E.

JennH · 22/04/2004 20:57

I liked Lily for ages, but it was a bit common so I got Evie from a name book and we loved it, We added May because it sounded good with Evie its a double name so she doesn't actually have a middle name. But to be honest she is never called Evie May just Evie.

lou33 · 22/04/2004 22:42

Oi Jenn, what about my Lily, is she common too ?

aloha · 23/04/2004 17:20

I don't know any little Lilys but I do know of two Evies - both in the same class at nursery with ds (when he went). Lovely name though. And sweet little girls.

bossykate · 23/04/2004 17:44

genuine question - why are people so hung up on having original names?

Angeliz · 23/04/2004 17:59

We loved the old classic names and especially my nana's name. (Though not really for sentimental reasons, just liked it).
We wittled it down to two and then when she was born she just 'fit' the one we picked.
We also added another and then decided to give her my mam's name too so she has 3!!
But it does sound lovely!!

Janh · 23/04/2004 17:59

bk, there were 4 Sams in my Sam's reception class...one of them also had a surname beginning with the same letter - all their artwork etc had to be labelled Sam Hi or Sam Ho! (Sounds Chinese...!)

It is nicer to have a unique name at primary school. I think!

bossykate · 23/04/2004 18:03

janh, i suppose so but how many olivias were there say 10 yrs ago and how many now? i suppose i mean that it is rare to find a truly original name and that it is easy to think you are original when you're merely surfing a zeitgeist wave.

what do you all think of arden? that's my latest one for unborn dd... not convinced myself and dh hates it! not that i myself am trying too hard to be original or anything...

israel · 23/04/2004 18:05

My dd is called Tamar...it is hebrew for date palm ....and so when I returned from my travels I have a reminder....my beloved little palm tree...growing fast

Janh · 23/04/2004 18:07

I quite like Arden, bk - I'm sure I read a book once with an Arden in it. Has Shakespearian connotations too.

Or you could have Alden - or Alder (kind of Rowan-ish but a bit different!

I will do you a link to my Behind the Names site - names by origin/usage - should keep you going for hours!

Janh · 23/04/2004 18:09

Esperanto!!!

(They're quite sweet in a mad esperantoish way )

Tortington · 23/04/2004 19:47

i love old testament names. i adore them i have an unused never to be used list of them. jospeh was a tradition in my husbands family. one broken by my MIL on naming hubby. i loved the name and the FIL was overjoyed. i fell in love with the name Jacob. despite my BIL saying all kinds of awful things and most people thinking the name was too weird. i stuck to my guns and am trez happy. we picked our daughters name by way of resignation as we couldnt agree and it was a case of " that will do!"

Janh · 23/04/2004 20:08

bk, from the other end of the alphabet, how does Zuleika grab you? (If you have the nerve...won't be so many of those even in 19 years time!)

I actually met one once - she was Brazilian and dro-dead gorgeous.

bossykate · 23/04/2004 20:19

thanks, jan not sure about zuleika, but i do like zara from the zs.

Tinker · 23/04/2004 20:21

Not sure about Arden bk. But then I'm not a one for 'origianl' names.

Know 3 Lily's off the top of my head. Was on my shortlist 7 years ago.
