What are they? Names, ages please!

I've got a ginger cat called Eric and he's nearly 10. Got him originally because we had mice in our last flat and despite the fact he never caught one (he's not very bright) he did "scare them away.

More than you think Maddi ? sorry, can't remember details, just 'ouch'. Although big debate in vet circles about whether repeat jabs every year (eg for fleas) are really necessary or just a con.
As you can gather, we have a cat, little and black and called Esme. Previous owner called her Clive. Her even more unfortunate sister was called Derek! (Peter Cooke/Dudley Moore reference.)

Slinky · 14/04/2004 22:36

Maddi

Found this on another website - to give you some idea.

www.mismatch.co.uk/vetbills.htm

Vet bills vary dramatically depending on where you live and which vet you visit. Most vets will charge to see the cat (see below for costs) and then treatment is extra.

The costs below are what I actually paid at our vet in Bedfordshire for treatment for our 3 cats. You should ask for a written estimate before deciding on which vet to choose. I have indicated when we paid these amounts as you will need to allow for inflating costs. I will update these costs and dates as and when we have further treatment done.

To spay a female cat: £42 (Dec 00)

To neuter a male cat: £33 (Dec 99)

Worming tablets (bought from vet): £2 (Jan 02)

Flea-spray (Frontline) : £21 for a pack of 6 (Apr 02)

Minimum charge to see cat: First visit - £14
Subsequent visits - £11

First vaccinations: £30 (Jul 00)

  • optional Feline Leukemia £22.55 (Jul 00)

Yearly booster vaccinations: £19 (Aug 00)

  • optional Feline Leukemia £14.71 (Jun 01)
  • attendance fee for injections £15.28 (Jun 01)

If you were to "rescue" a cat, then usually the Rescue Centre would ensure they were spayed/neutered.

MADDI hope this helps

Levanna · 14/04/2004 22:44

ANTS, loads and loads of them ('till Monday when the pest people come ). Tropicals here too, (RTB shark, talking cat, corys, neons, gourami's, and a sucking loach.)

MADDI · 14/04/2004 22:49

Brilliant, thanks for links and advice. Better start saving as DD wants a white cat which she will call Lily (all her dollies are called Lily too)

Kayleigh · 14/04/2004 22:54

I have a Pussy (she says Mrs Slocombe stylee)

carla · 14/04/2004 22:55

Slinky, that's excellent value. We're being charged £35 per dog just to have them washed round here!

Slinky · 14/04/2004 22:57

Carla

Those prices quoted are from that website - not my vet. I can't remember off-hand what mine charges.

I was lazy and just "copied and pasted"

Tommy · 14/04/2004 23:08

We have a cat who is 3. She loves leaving dead mice in the garden so DS1 can pick them up and say "eek eek, mouse Mummy!" very proudly

Freckle · 14/04/2004 23:10

Apart from the myriad of goldfish in the pond in the garden (so far unnamed, but I'm sure we'll get round to it), we have a guinea pig called Pinky (her friend Perky died recently ), a rabbit called Miss Lucy, 3 cats called Preston (after Preston Pig), Jess (after Messy Jess, not Postman Pat's mog) and Kipper (after Kipper the dog), and a dog called Coco (rescue Scottish border collie - chocolate and white, hence the rather obvious name). Cats are 8 (all from same litter), dog is about 3.5 - 4 yo. Rabbit 6 months-ish and gp about 4yo.

yamamoto · 14/04/2004 23:14

Sophie the rabbit, Swirl and Juniper the ponies, Maisey the horse, Benson the dog, Indian runner ducks Bob the builder, Jack and Vera. 4 pet lambs arrived today plus an amazing auto milk feeder; takes 6 pints of lamb milk, plug it in and it keeps milk at the optiMUM temp and has 4 nipples around the outside. Wondered if it could be modified for baby use...

dottee · 14/04/2004 23:31

'Woofy' a Lancashire Heeler dog age unknown as he was a stray.

2 Kois and 4 goldfish.

carla · 14/04/2004 23:38

Where about'ish are you, Freckle?

Freckle · 15/04/2004 07:25

fairydust · 15/04/2004 07:32

Likes bringng mice in as persent for me.

glitterfairy · 15/04/2004 07:38

Carla I have a welsh springer spaniel called Skip (named by kids after seeing very slushy fim called my dog skip). He is obsessed by squirels.Did have his brother as puppies but got too much with three kids and so very sadly but in dogs best interests the breeder re homed one who is now at crufts. Have always had springers and the kids learnt to walk by climbing on their backs but because they are so good with kids have always worried that they have the wrong impression of dogs. My last springer was a saint and they used to poke him with sticks (when I wasnt looking) but kids have got better behaved as they got older.

Freckle · 15/04/2004 07:49

Squirrels seem to be having a bad time here, don't they? Coco is totally obsessed with them. We get them in the garden and, when I open the back door, he goes hell for leather up to the top of the garden, trying to beat the squirrels who are normally legging it along the top of the fence in the same direction. Poor dog hasn't realised that there is a tree about 10 ft from the end of the garden and the squirrels always head straight up it. Dog's then left bouncing around at the end of the garden trying to work out where they've gone. Clearly not too bright.

Soxwasher · 15/04/2004 08:47

Black Labrador - called Mango

lazyeye · 15/04/2004 09:00

Moggie from Battersea bought to get rid of mice (and he did) - called Pat (the cat)

Hamster, George - very boring

2xfish - think we decided on Tickle & Patch but not sure.

Would love dog but probably not fair, and hubbie said he would move out.......close contest though

glitterfairy · 15/04/2004 09:24

Springers are a little thick but lovely! They never realise they cant climb and squirrels. Actually maybe not thick just mad and very enthusiastic missing the detail! Much like toddlers.

glitterfairy · 15/04/2004 09:27

Sorry have read back and realised that I meant and squirrels can climb. By the way Lazyeye could always start dog swap/holiday club!

juniper68 · 15/04/2004 09:34

We have 2 guinea pigs aged 10 months called Lavender and Rosemary and a goldfish aged 2 months called Pegasus. Oh, and a spider that lives on my bouquet of flowers that I haven't the heart to throw out even though they're dead (plus I'd be in big bother from DS1 )

slinky, love the name Chicken nugget for your goldfish

Benjaminsmummy · 15/04/2004 10:16

We have a cat called Philomena (known as Beanie) who is 4. She seems to get on OK with DS, although sometimes its like having a toddler when she climbs on my knee when I'm feeding him!

Reading these posts reminds me I needt o get some Frontline and preprare her forthe arrival of fleas. She is allergic to their bites and if we don't Frontline her gets horrible scabs poor thing.

suedonim · 15/04/2004 12:45

One dog, a 10yo PITA Tricolour Cavalier King Charles bitch. One Tortie Colourpoint female cat, aged 14, and one 3yo female tabby cat. Oh and I took delivery yesterday of 500 worms for my wormery.

Tetley · 15/04/2004 12:59

2 cats, both 6 years old (I think!). Called Bob & Dave. Very sweet & loving, but if they bring in any more dead things (or worse, still living things that they let loose in the kitchen) I can't guarantee their safety!

After being away over Easter we got back to a dead sparrow, which had been dead for a couple of days, by the smell, and had also put up a good fight first, judging by the feathers & bird shit around the kitchen......
