How much do you spend on birthday presents at parties your kids are invited to?

Title says it all. dd has 8 parties lined up over the next few weeks for 4 year olds. She's been to 2 and I spent about £8.00 on each present but saw some of the other presents and some were obviously much cheaper and a couple more OTT. What's the going rate? dd's party is at the end of this long line of parties so I don't know what'll be spent on her.

Thanks

mmmm at the min tend to have a £10 max but then we dont go to many parties.

LIZS · 05/10/2006 21:38

We spend about the same , usually up to £10 or maybe a bit more for a close friend. dd received pretty similar price range.

hulababy · 05/10/2006 21:39

Depending on how well we/DD knows them £5 to £10. Not adverse to the odd bargain too

tortoiseshell · 05/10/2006 21:39

I spend between 5 and 10 pounds - to be honest, I just try and get something I know they'll like and not worry about the cost or cheapness. For best friends I might spend a bit more, but for most classmates, a token present is ok!

hulababy · 05/10/2006 21:39

DD has 6 parties (plus one lastw weekend) over next 6 weeks - so got to reduce amount - only 5th week into school!

Gingerbear · 05/10/2006 21:41

£5 - DD got lots of My Little Pony or Polly Pockets - Woolies were doing them for £4.99 or less in the summer.
I stocked up on craft packs from Lidl for £2.99 - heaps of coloured card, scissors, glitter and pipecleaners.
Look at Hawkins Bazaar or Baker Ross for cheapish present ideas.

Posey · 05/10/2006 21:41

If its just a classmate, rather than a good friend, then I tend to spend around about £5. But I'm a good bargain hunter and tend to buy suitable presents in the sale if I see them (you know, often see something reduced from £9.99 to £4.99)
Also buy packs of books from The Book People and split them.

galaxy · 05/10/2006 21:42

So I'm about the right price then. Hula - dd hardly knows some of these children - only been in their class for 3 weeks. I had to invite 21 for hers but thakfully 3 have decined so far - I was sort of banking on ending up with about 15 maximum

Might see what I can get on Boots 3 for 2's to try and save some money.

About a tenner or less if I find something good.

hulababy · 05/10/2006 21:44

Also, can get Book People book packs to divide up too.

hulababy · 05/10/2006 21:45

Ooops - just seen Posey said same!

cece · 05/10/2006 21:45

I aim for 5-10 pounds but often buy suitable things when I see them in the Sales.... so could be less but looks more iyswim!
Keep them all in a big box in wardrobe which gets dragged out whenever there is a party to g to... usually something suitable in there!

LIZS · 05/10/2006 21:46

Orchard games start at around £6 and craft sets from elc. Also try to buy ahead !

foxinsocks · 05/10/2006 21:47

yes reception is a right pain in a sense because people tend to invite the whole class - which is nice in a way as everyone is still getting to know each other, but it does mean the weekends get filled up very quickly!

for whole class parties we tend to spend around £5 - where the parties get a bit smaller or it is a special friend, we spend nearer £10

foxinsocks · 05/10/2006 21:48

mm that's a good idea cece - a sort of presents box

helsy · 05/10/2006 21:49

About seven quid - try to get nice things when they're reduced and get more for my money. Dd1's birthday is bang in the middle of the January sales and it shows - she gets lots of great pressies that were obviously half-price after Christmas - either that or people round here spend 20 quid on birthdays and I'm a tight-fisted bag.

cece · 05/10/2006 21:50

Thanks my mum used to do it so carrying on the family tradition.

Saves me stress ayt last minute and beacuse I buy things in the sale they get a nicer present iyswim!

Posey · 05/10/2006 21:50

Also tend to make up my own craft packs which go down well. Just buy bigger packs of pens, paper, card, decorations (Baker Ross great for these) and then bung a selection in a decorated box.

Loshad · 05/10/2006 21:50

I keep a presents box too, when i see 3 for 2 offers on eg lego at wooilies and so forth I stocvk up. general classmates presents I try to peg at around £8, best friends, or as they get older £10, or perhaps a little more

Bozza · 05/10/2006 21:51

£5-6 going up to £10-11 for special friends.

2shoescreepingthroughblood · 05/10/2006 21:55

£5

Twohoots · 05/10/2006 21:56

About £7-10. I too use Red House Books or The Book People as they have some great kids books and sale stuff.

hana · 05/10/2006 21:57

a fiver, maybe a bit more.

HuwEdwards · 05/10/2006 21:59

£5 quid (loads of stuff on Hawkins bazaar and Yellow Moon websites) moving up to £7-£10 for closer friends
