What do you do in your spare time?

jodiemay · 11/04/2004 22:56

Is it just me or when the kids are out the way and your dh says "have some time doing what you want", why is it that you only do the housework, ironing, washing, cleaning etc.
I feel guilty if I don't do the above, but if I don't, no-one else will. I seem to have not much time for me, and me alone.......how about you MNetters?

...spare time...spare time...WHAT IS THAT!..seriously though my family think I have flipped since discovering this site...At last!!! someone who can answer back without a grunt, someone who takes notice....someone who I can share advice / problems with...a blumin computer!!!...does that make me or my life sad!!

Lisa78 · 11/04/2004 23:02

I don't have any spare time, I end up on mn for half an hour then sit here all night

jac34 · 11/04/2004 23:02

I usually end up doing chores as well, but as soon as they are out of the way,I love to lie on my bed and read. Especially, a Sunday morning, I pile up the pillows and refuse to move !!!
I've just finished an Anita Shreve book, I've been reading while DH watches the golf on telly.

jodiemay · 11/04/2004 23:03

My dh is watching golf too, plays every morning before work, every other week (shift worker) and still moans! Ungrateful get!

Goodness, no, I don't do housework if I get spare time! My house is a tip mind you. I read or come here or have a bath or call a friend and chat for an hour.

Ghosty · 12/04/2004 08:44

Sleep ... sod the housework ...

Freckle · 12/04/2004 08:55

I read or do cross-stitch. The housework can go hang - which is does if you listen to my mum

toddlerbob · 12/04/2004 09:07

My dh was going to take ds out today so I could have some time to myself. I was actually relieved when I noticed his car had a puncture because I didn't have a clue what I wanted to do "by myself".I almost posted here for ideas. We all had a lovely day together. Left alone I probably would have been sad and done the housework.

Angeliz · 12/04/2004 09:14

jodiemay, i do the housework too!!!

Sometimes i have a long bath and i always walk the dog! Mind you, i love cleaning so not a problem for me

Flip · 12/04/2004 09:40

I write. Although since I discovered mumsnet I've barely wrote anything. It's my own little world where I can slip into and anything is possible. I really must finish the current chapter I'm working on but always end up posting on mumsnet. I could do with the cable company disconnecting the broadband for a few days.

merglemergle · 12/04/2004 09:53

spare time? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...

(my son is only 7 months old...I'm sure it gets better...and I am reading MN so I must have SOME spare time after all ).

littlerach · 12/04/2004 10:00

I end up cleaning or posting!!
Yet when DH has spare time, he says it is his time, so he watches tv etc, and won't do housework.
Not Fair!!!!!

collision · 12/04/2004 10:30

sleeping or mumsnetting or watching Friends!

goosey · 12/04/2004 10:35

My ultimate spare time fantasy would be to be able to sleep undisturbed in a big white bed in a white room with white curtains blowing in a sea breeze. No clutter and no company - just me for as long as it took for me to be ready to dive into family life again.

fisil · 12/04/2004 10:38

Read, make cards, luxuriate in the bath. And of course, Mumsnet. Would never think of doing housework!

Posey · 12/04/2004 21:07

Much the same as most of you..
A quick check of mumsnet lasts the whole evening. If I resist temptation, I tend to watch a bit of telly, read, sleep.

handlemecarefully · 13/04/2004 08:55

I had more spare time when at work (to mumsnet principally) - now on mat leave awaiting 2nd baby. When at home with dd (ha ha - she is at Day Nursery today though, and I am on mumsnet so enjoying some genuine spare time)any 'moments' of spare time are spent catching up on chores. Spare time 'proper' kicks in about 20.30 in the evening, and since I am often in bed by 22.00 consists of nothing more exciting than watching tv or reading!

emmatmg · 13/04/2004 09:05

Rarely get spare time but come on here if I do.
I had a big reailty check recently, well a few actually.

Easter holidays and the kids are driving me absolutley MAD, been in tears it's so bad. Anyway DH been off work for a few days and after quite a few horrid days I walked out for some 'me time' and realised once in the car that I actually had nowhere to go. Family live 60-70 miles away, the few friends I have seeing relatives. so do yo know what I did? went to Tesco and did the shopping!

How sad is that then?

BTW I'm not fishing for sympathy as when i told DH about my 'me time' outing we both laughed. Anyone got any suggestion for hobbies?

mummysurfer · 13/04/2004 09:37

emmatmg
whereabouts are you?

emmatmg · 13/04/2004 10:08

surrey

iota · 13/04/2004 11:11

I do mumsnet, go to the gym and sit in the steam room, go into town and have coffee in Costa coffee - do a bit of browsing round the shops, read books.
Sometimes I stare into space or watch TV. I love my free time - I gave up work a year ago and have one boy in school and one in nursery. This gives me enough time to fit chores in as well, so I don't feel guilty.

Jodiemay, I think you need to practise doing fun things for yourself - the housework will always be there, whether you hoover daily or once a fortnight!!

mummytojames · 13/04/2004 11:15

day time house work then mumsnet
nighttime bath book mumset and me time

mummytojames · 13/04/2004 11:20

i think the funniest one i have ever done is said to my partner thats it i have just had a baby was told full bed rest so went spring leaning even though i told him to take the baby out for a walk so i could catch up on some sleep us women are strange people men get spare time and do not much we get spare time and start thinking what have we forgotten to do

Demented · 13/04/2004 22:27

Iota:- "I do mumsnet, go to the gym and sit in the steam room, go into town and have coffee in Costa coffee - do a bit of browsing round the shops, read books.
Sometimes I stare into space or watch TV."

We must be separated at birth, this is how I spend my spare time (all except the steam room).

charliecat · 13/04/2004 22:34

I do all the things I should have done earlier, like dusting shelfs or tidying toys or cleaning the loo, that is after browsing mumsnet of course. Have done cross stitching in the past and always read a few pages of a book in the bath and in bed.
