***Marlow*** do you live there/know it - commuting questions!

Tutter · 24/09/2006 18:13

we visited today and liked the place a lot.

just trying to figure out the logistics of the commute for dh. don't like the sound of the 'marlow donkey' to change at maidenhead, so wondering whether driving to maidenhead is a better option. are there plentiful car parking spaces at the station? traffic OK between marlow and maidenhead>

or is another town/station a better option? high wycombe?

If you can't find anything in Marlow, you could always drive to Bourne End.

Only a few miles down the road.

There are some nice places there.

And it has its own station!!!!!!!!

Or there's Wooburn Green, which is a few miles from Bourne End.

Probably a bit cheaper than Henly!!!

flashingnose · 30/09/2006 19:19

Marlow's lovely

Tutter · 01/10/2006 10:14

fussy how did you know we were also looking at henley? in fact we're off to suss it out today. trains a wee bit faster. it will have to do well to beat marlow though.

the reason we're unlikely to go for bourne end or other villages is that we ant to be able to walk into a reasonable sized town. would be too much of a shock to the system to move from london to somehwere rural.

Tutter read your post from sat 30th sept!!!!

I'm not really psychic.

If you want to be able to walk into a town, you should try High Wycombe!!!!!!

Loads of different areas, all close to town centre, which is having millions spent od re-development that i believe is due to be completed early next year.

You should take a look !!!

marriedinmarlow · 01/10/2006 23:57

I used to live in Marlow, got married in the church by the river, lived in a house tucked behind the High Street. Everything was on our doorstep - river, park, restaurants, pubs, shops. I loved it.

We moved to London a few years ago, because dh got fed up with the commute (from Marlow to London).

I really miss it.

marriedinmarlow · 02/10/2006 00:01

Being within walking distance of the town is what would make it worth the move IMO.

fussy - oh, errm, yes

went to henley yesterday and liked it. very similar to marlow i thought. seems the commute is marginally better from henley even though it's a bit further away.

once we've sold this place we may go and spend a weekend in each place to try to get to know them a bit better.

TutterIckOrTreat · 09/10/2006 13:22

update for any locals who may care ...

we have sold our house and are moving into a rented house in wargrave, just outside henley at the beginning of december. very excited and a little bit nervous about leaving london and moving to a new area - gulp.

we now just have to figure out where to live between being kicked out of our house (soon) and moving into the new place. anyone know any campsites nearby?

fussymummy · 10/10/2006 23:10

There are some private caravan parks just outside Marlow, don't know if any of them rent them out though.

Can't you move into rented house sooner, or find another one?????

Didnt' take long to sell yours!!!

Can't you hold out on moving date???

Mind you, you could lose sale if you did that.

MrsBeDreadingTrickOrTreat · 27/10/2006 19:46

sorry to gatecrash

DH has been offered a job and now he's wondering...

decline
accept and commute something chronic 2h each way thanks to bad train connections
accept and move to Marlow...

anybody on here lives in marlow or surroundings? What's it like? especially with 2 small children

Californiafright told me to come here from my thread

fussymummy · 29/10/2006 01:20

Marlow is a lovely area to live.

Shops are quite expensive.

Lovely park.

You'd probably be better off in High Wycombe.

Lots of new places opening in the town, all new and still being built.

We live in Wycombe.

Have grown up here.

MrsBeDreadingTrickOrTreat · 29/10/2006 21:24

fussymummy sounds like you're a well of information ;) What else do I need to know... hmmm... is it better to move somewhere close to Marlow or actually move to Marlow? What's public transport like between 'villages'? Any idea about schools, nurseries and work (me)? Saying that dh isn't convinced yet but he's that kind of type who needs a nudge to see a good thing iykwim

fussymummy · 29/10/2006 23:16

Sorry, can't help with the buses as i don't use them.

Marlow has a few good schools, don't know about nurseries.

we have a lovely nursery that is attached to the school, so the children start at 3 years old then move up through the years and leave at 11.

If you want private nurseries there are some in Wycombe.

What sort of work do you do???

Sounds like you need to get everything sorted and then take hubby to see the place for himself.

Where are you living now?

MrsBeDreadingTrickOrTreat · 30/10/2006 13:14

thanks I do secretarial/admin kind a stuff . Hubby has seen Marlow as he's been for the interviews. Planning on driving down there coming weekend weather allowing.

I think I will have to make up his mind for him, but then again if it all goes pear shaped it will of course be all my fault

Tutter · 30/10/2006 13:17

hi fussymummy - sorry only just seen your post. we convinced our buyers to wait, so we can stay put here til the rental house is available at the start of december - was a big relief.

very much looking forward to moving into the new area - have already been sussing out mother and toddler stuff.

I know people who love using buses in Wycombe.

The bus station used to be disgusting, really filthy and smelly, toilets were awful etc...

A few months ago a brand new bus station was opened as part of the new building project that's going on here.

Apparantly its brilliant.

Looks really nice.

Drove past it a few weeks ago.

You have no chance of revisiting it Californifirework it's in the process of being demolished!!!!

It really was yukky!!

Soon to be replaced by lovely new shops, so you'll have to visit to get some happy memories of the sad old place.
