and what are they like and where did you get them?

I'm having a hellish time trying to pick some nice fabric. I could do with some help.

we have long red velvet curtains in the sitting room and our bedroom. Cast offs from mil. I love them as they make the room seem so warm in winter and a little bit glamorous. And they are thick so they do actually make the room warner and keep out (some) traffic noise.

cupcakes · 20/09/2006 17:09

I also have yellow gingham curtains in downstairs loo which were made to measure from Laura Ashley. They are nice and well made but I don't love them as much as my red ones.

JoolsToo · 20/09/2006 17:10

thanks cupcakes - yes we like red and warmer tones, but I don't want a solid colour and I also want subtle - it's tough, believe me!

ha, funny that we have just ordered some for the sitting room from Laura Ashley - we hummed and haaed for ages, then went in to change our minds, then decided to stick with them - nightmare!

I need more for elsewhere though too.

I have got crappy curtains - came with the house (I can clearly recall saying "the curtains will have to go..." cut to 6 years later )

We did replace the pink and cold striped swaggy jobbies in the living room with some plain cream tab top curtains (dirt cheap from Ponden Mill) if that helps at all.

marthamoo · 20/09/2006 17:11

Pink and cold? Er...pink and gold.

MrsSpoon · 20/09/2006 17:13

Nooo marthamoo, you've not got "jobbies" hanging in your livingroom have you?

JoolsToo · 20/09/2006 17:13

yeah I was going for cream (to be safe) but as the sofa and carpet are going to be cream thought it would all look a bit bland!

I saw some nice fabric and got a swatch - Jane Churchill - a snip at £52 per metre (she can whistle)

I have:
gorgeous chocolate brown velvet, lined in silvery-green in the hall
a sage/olive slubbed velvet/chenille in the living room
sheeny slubbed silk in taupe in the back room

all floor to ceiling
all £2.99 per metre from Bankrupt faric clearance and made up by a lady who lives round the corner for £100. absolute bargain.

I used to have a curtain making business in a small way with a friend. Am so sick of the sight of curtains that I have now got rid of them all apart from the spare bedroom. Got lovely wooden blinds up. Although I am thinking about making some full length ones for the lounge french doors for the winter for cosiness.

I LOVE curtains, and even in the kitchen where we have blinds they are made of fabric.

MarsLady · 20/09/2006 18:03

My curtains in the back lounge were fabulous! I say were.... DT2....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! He decided that the best way to treat my curtains was to wrap himself up in them and spin round and round and round and round and round until the curtain pole snapped!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

CfF - traumatic? that's the understatement of the year

I'm a spent force in this choosing lark and then when I do choose I worry that I've chosen wrong ....

I like my living room ones. White with sort of stripes embroidered down the middle (?) hard to explain, v.neutral. Hung on pine poles.

My living room has 2 windows in it - one at the front and one at the back. I am cheap so we only have one curtain side on each pole and it looks really cool.

The only way to get half decent curtains is to make them yourself.

ComeOVeneer · 20/09/2006 19:11

I have fantastic curtains made by my mum. She made cream ones for dd's room with a big band of pink gingham with embroidered daisies and black out lining, which are my favourite. We are taking them all with us when we move much to the disappointment of our buyers.

JoolsToo · 20/09/2006 19:16

well yes I used to make my own too but now I don't have to plus there are two huge sets needed for the sitting room and they'd be too unwieldy for little ole me!

I've been to a fabric warehouse with hundreds of styles to choose from and I can't find one I like - it must be me!

I waited and waited for the Gosford Plum material in Laura Ashley to be in the sale. Eventually it was, so I went in and sorted out sizes, lengths etc. While the lady when to get the roll from stock, I spotted the Gosford Paprika also vastly reduced (seconds - not true colour so you couldn't buy anything else from the range to coordinate but I didn't want to) and I didn't know which to choose. I then decided to buy the plum for the dining room and the paprika for the living room. My MIL made them up and they look lovely! Most of my curtain and bedding stuff has been bought in the Laura Ashley sale or is from their seconds / discontinued line. I had old Fireman Sam ones in my bedroom one time while I waited for some material I liked to be reduced so that it was affordable!

JoolsToo · 20/09/2006 20:12

oooh Ivor - you couldn't post a piccy could you? (cheeky cow aren't I?) I rather liked the Gosford design myself and it was a contender for the sitting room but have gone with Erin.

We do prefer warmer shades really so I hope we're going to like them - eeek! (Its 20% off at the mo!)

I'm not very good at visualising that's why I like to see the fabric made up
