Twiglett · 19/09/2006 07:59

on the wall over a high fireplace

or stick it on a stand in an alcove

(3 metre high ceilings)

On a wall but not over a fireplace
surely the fireplace is the feature of the room

Twiglett · 19/09/2006 08:05

yes but if tv off would you notice it?

that's the only wall it might fit on cos alcoves too small to fit it so would have to be on a stand

it appears to be a huge motherf'''ker

sorry havent got the answer then.
I think mirror or picture should be above fireplace not a massive telly

Twiglett · 19/09/2006 08:11

yeah .. I think you're right

its not just massive .. its ma-hoo-sive

boys . toys

I have thought about this too. Because the fact is that the telly is so often what the room is geared around, instead of the fireplace, but this way the room would always be centered around the fireplace.

However, not sure it would look nice. (and besides havn't got plasma telly yet!!!)

But if it's a real fire, you could end up with mucky screen quickly no?

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/09/2006 08:15

No. It would be too high to watch. We had the same dilemma last year, but opted in the end to put it on the opposite wall. Is that an option for you?

Twiglett · 19/09/2006 08:16

would be above huge sofa

I think I'm going to get him to sell it

cheeseandonion · 19/09/2006 08:17

god yes the ideal place for a plasma and the surround sound is in the centre of room

Tutter · 19/09/2006 08:20

we have a mahoosive one and plumped for leaving it on its stand in the corner (of a big room). felt that above the fireplace would be too much of a "the telly is the centre of our lives" kind of thing.

nailpolish · 19/09/2006 08:21

ideally a plasma telly should be at eyelevel

(when sitting down)

and i wouldnt put it over a fireplace unless it was one of these mirror tellys

OR maybe if the fireplace was not an active one

nailpolish · 19/09/2006 08:22

cos id o know someone whose telly melted when it came to winter and they decided to turn on the gas

Gingerbear · 19/09/2006 08:25

My sis has her humongous plasma TV high up on a wall in her 30 ft living room. I expect the Pearl and Dean tune to start whenever I walk in the room.

cooperflykiller · 19/09/2006 09:18

Currently wrestling with this (admittedly inane) dilemma !

These wacking great TV's cannot go over very hot working fireplaces as they will break down, resulting in a very expensive mistake. If the heat is below 90F where the TV is supposed to hang then it is apparently OK (according to internet research). But.....isn't it a teensy bit naff? Am I being silly? And yes, nailpolish, I agree - shouldn't a TV be at eye level? Over the chimney is too high, surely?

sugarfree · 19/09/2006 09:55

Just went through this the other week with my 'boy' and his 'toy'.
We opted for on a stand in the alcove, doesn't fit straight on so is at an angle.
For those that care,it is a 43" which imo makes us very footballers wives .I have told very few people irl about it because I'm actually quite embarrassed... can't get past it being common.
If you've got the home cinema sound system be warned,if you watch Pirates of the Caribbean it sounds like hordes of pirates coming out from behind the sofa.I watched Mr and Mrs Smith when we first got it and thought someone had been shot in my hall.
In my day you were glad to have a black and white portable that held the picture for more than 15 minutes.

hub2dee · 19/09/2006 10:16

If you have oodles of expensive art to convert you could get it built into a cabinet of some description so it could come up when needed and disappear when not. You will then maintain the pretense of not being a footballers' wife.

iota · 19/09/2006 10:17

hub2dee - some friends of ours have one of those cabinets - it's great

LieselVonTrapp · 19/09/2006 10:33

Anywhere but my house. I hate tv's being the focal point of peoples houses.

Twiglett · 19/09/2006 15:17

WTF is everyone banging on about focal points for?

you enter a room you take in the whole room

you sit down in a room you look at whoever you're talking to, the book you're reading, the programme you're watching

blah blah blah

we live in these houses and I swear I'm not the only one who doesn't consciously notice how its decorated any more .... focal points ... arrrrggghhhhhhh

I like Hubs cupboard idea

but personally prefer the thought of selling it

oliveoil · 19/09/2006 15:19

I hate big tv's sorry

get rid of the m*thafocker

oliveoil · 19/09/2006 15:20

tvs?

oh, put the ' wherever

StrawberryMoon · 19/09/2006 15:22

when we save up we're putting one above a radiator cover in our bedroom(where fire place orignally was), so will look like mirror/picture frame when not on

Kidstrack · 19/09/2006 15:22

dp was adamant that our new lcd would be fitted on to the wall, over my dead body, but low and belhold he done it one day i was out, it looked absolutely stupid, spoiled the wall, i invited friends over one night for a drink and they all had sore necks inc dp looking up at the tv on the wall, next day he removed the brackets and bought a stand from argos and put it in the corner of the living room! That'll teach him

aitch71 · 19/09/2006 15:24

my neighbours have one of these above their fireplace, it is hellish to watch the telly on - you get a crick in your neck almost immediately.

MrsSpoon · 19/09/2006 15:25

Think the telly above fireplace looks a bit chavtastic and you are bound to get a crick in your neck trying to watch it.
