Anyone done this and what juice did you find out? Also, how do you go about finding out the more interesting stuff? I've done quite well at getting names, dates of birth, marriages and deaths but there is nothing to tell you what the person was actually like.

When I get to the ancestry site and sign up for free 14 day trial what do I do then?

And final dorky question: where do I send for the Violet Isabel birth certificate?

TIA

bubblerock · 19/09/2006 22:59

Hi IF - it really is just practice and luck most of the time, some people are just noe meant to be found but you are lucky in the fact that your tree has been researched already!

Once you sign up for your free trial on ancestry go to the home page and click on TREES - then you can type in 'WILHELMINA THORNHILL' and search. this will bring up 2 oneworldtree entries and 3 personal tree entries, you can then browse these trees and contact the people who have created the trees to see how they ae related - if at all.

HERE is the link for ordering certificates online.

The best way to get your head around it is to get your piece of paper, write your name on, then your mum and dad, then just go back on the information we have posted here. You can always write in how they are related to you as you do it - ie, gran, g gran, gg gran....

imaginaryfriend · 20/09/2006 10:56

So was Wilhelmina Violet's mother? I think I have some kind of dyslexia with this even though I've written it down so far. I'm thinking that if I contact somebody who's started the tree I should at least be able to tell them who I am in relation to it all , even though I haven't a clue!

thanks for the other links, I'm going to order the birth certificate right now.

And finally, I'd still like to trace Harry my dad's dad who died in the bomb. If you were starting from scratch with him where would you go first of all?

throckenholt · 20/09/2006 11:00

And finally, I'd still like to trace Harry my dad's dad who died in the bomb. If you were starting from scratch with him where would you go first of all?

you have the date of the bomb ? Look up the burial in the BMD indexes on ancetry.co.uk, then from teh age at death work out his birth - check the birth register indexes around that time. If it gets in to the census era (1901 and earlier) ask someone to look them up for you (rootschat.com is a good place for that).

bubblerock · 20/09/2006 11:34

Don't worry, I just had to write it down too - it gets very confusing doesn't it?

When contacting the people you can say that your Great Grandfather was James Thornhill and your Great Grandmother was Wilhelmina Edge (Mother and father of your Grandmother - Violet Isobel Lodge, nee Thornhill)

I'll see if I can find Harrys Birth cert details.

bubblerock · 20/09/2006 12:02

Okay, there are 3 Harry Lodge's born in 1976 - they also appear on the 1881,91,01 census, so It is one of them - but which one? Does your Mum remember any other relatives of Harry?

Here are the details of the three Harrys Birth Registers -

Jan/Feb/Mar 1876
Harry Lodge Wortley 9C 265
Harry Lodge Huntslet 9B 350

Jul/Aug/Sep 1876
Harry Lodge Bradford.Y 9B 146

On each census all of them are with family though - either parents or Aunt/Uncle non are in an institution.

throckenholt · 20/09/2006 12:25

Can you find Harry Lodge on the 1901 census ? That would give you a clue to where he was born.

These may be possibles

Births Mar 1875
Lodge Harry Wakefield 9c 62
Lodge Harry Rotherham 9c 646
LODGE Harry Goole 9c 739
Births Jun 1875

There are also quite a few choices on the 1881 census on familysearch.org.

I guess you need to get his and Violet's marriage certificate to get his father's name.

Births Mar 1876
LODGE Harry Wortley 9c 265
LODGE Harry Hunslet 9b 350

Births Sep 1876
Lodge Harold Dewsbury 9b 740
Lodge Harry Bradford Y 9b 146

Births Dec 1877
Lodge Harry Huddersfield 9a 326
Lodge Harry Halifax 9a 466

All in the Yorkshire area.

throckenholt · 20/09/2006 12:27

snap !

not sure how my post got mangled - the comment is supposed to be at the end.

bubblerock · 20/09/2006 12:29

lol - definately need the marriage certificate!

bubblerock · 20/09/2006 12:31

oops - just realised I put 1976 in my earlier post (that's my year of birth)

imaginaryfriend · 20/09/2006 13:06

You guys are great. I'm going to look up the Harry's. But I'm still confused about where Violet fits in. Is she a child of this couple:

Children of James/Wilhelmina
Wilhelmina Thornhill Sept 1879 Sheffield
MARRIED 1907 Sheffield
Rev RF Burrow (Spouse)
No descendents named

throckenholt · 20/09/2006 13:10

see - now I am feling old - my birthday is 1966.

I have lost track - have you got the 1891 census for Violet and her family ?

lemonaid · 20/09/2006 13:18

Yes, she's a child of James Thornhill and Wilhelmina Edge. See bubblerock's post of Monday, 18 September, 2006 10:12:48 PM with the 1891 census details.

throckenholt · 20/09/2006 13:18

Children of James/Wilhelmina
Wilhelmina Thornhill Sept 1879 Sheffield
MARRIED 1907 Sheffield
Rev RF Burrow (Spouse)
No descendents named

surely this is Violet's sister ? - daughter of James and Wilhelmina, born 1879 and married to Rev Burrow in 1907.

Violet is her younger sister (not included in the list quoted from someelses published tree, but she is in the same family on the 1891 census given somewhere else).

So that means her parents are probably the James Thornhill and Wilhelmina Edge quoted somewhere else.
their marriage is :

Mar Q 1876 Sheffield 9c 516 - so between Jan and Mar

lemonaid · 20/09/2006 13:20

Where you've gone wrong with the "No descendants named" is that you've selected Wilhelmina Thornhill Jr. (another daughter of James Thornhill and Wilhelmina Edge and hence Violet's sister). If you go up a level to either James Thornhill or Wilhelmina Edge you should see all their children, including Violet, listed.

bubblerock · 20/09/2006 13:20

Violet is the child of Wilhelmina Edge and James Thornhill. Here they all are in 1891

Cross-posted with throckenholt

throckenholt · 20/09/2006 13:28

this thread is so long now it is taking me ages to go back and work out the details !

It is funny how you can get hooked on someone else's search - you still get that detective buzz - even when they are nothing to do with you .

I admit it - I am an addict - I have been on and off since I was 12 !

throckenholt · 20/09/2006 13:29

and the internet has made it much worse

imaginaryfriend · 20/09/2006 13:33

Ah ... I see now! Thanks again. Over to me. Shall I keep you posted as to what I discover?

Throckenholt, my birthday is in 1966 too ... I feel so ancient but then when you do these kind of searches you realise that it's all quite irrelevant in the larger scheme of things!

throckenholt · 20/09/2006 14:04

40 is looming at the end of the month for me !

But I agree - family history does give you a sense of perspective - never thought of it like that before.

If you do buy the marriage certificate of Violet and Harry let us know who is father is and we can help you dig further (see we are fighting over who can help first ).

Certificates might be taking a while to come through at the moment - they usually take a week or two - but for some odd reason they take much longer whenever "who do you think you are?" is on .

imaginaryfriend · 20/09/2006 20:49

I ordered it today actually so I'll let you know when it comes.

Alas, 40 has already loomed for me. I felt really quite depressed about it but now I'm clutching onto it because the next decade will be bloody 50!!! EEEEEEeeeeeekkkkkkkkkk!!

throckenholt · 21/09/2006 07:54

but now I'm clutching onto it because the next decade will be bloody 50!!! EEEEEEeeeeeekkkkk

Eeeekkkk indeed - I hadn't thought of it like that .

Did you notice the estimate dispatch date for the certificate ? It would be interesting to know how much they have been affect by WDYTYA. Last time they were completely inundated - they went from delivery times of a few days to weeks and even months !

bubblerock · 21/09/2006 09:27

Old farts

imaginaryfriend · 21/09/2006 10:11

whippersnapper!!

I didn't look at the expected delivery date. Sounds like I'm about to give birth, no? I'll check it out now. Seems mean for me to have to wait when I don't even watch that programme ...
