Does your child have a birth mark?

My dd has a red birth mark on her face...between her eyes and another on one eyelid. they are fading but have never really botherd me. Other people's reactions to it have surprised me though. some people dont want to mention it at all... many say things like 'what a shame' or ' you'll have to get that seen to' . Someone even offered to 'touch it up' and remove it from photographs!!! TBH i was quite grateful as it meant that my dd was recogisable and harder for someone to pinch in the hospital. Has anyone else had strange reactions to their baby's birth marks? and, for facial ones will you 'get it seen to'?

My youngest dd has what we call sprinkles on her forehead. There are tiny red dots. I love them!!

HiddenIcon · 27/11/2007 10:56

Both my DSs have them. DS1 on his knee and DS2 on his privates.

My mum has a large brown one, about the size of a tea-plate on her back.

yaddayule · 27/11/2007 11:01

Tibsy, my sister had a very prominent nevus on her face, totally dissapeared now

Spod my friends little girl had a very similar mark .. she's now 5 and it is only noticeable when she's ill or tired (and barely at that)

Ds has a very cute brown spodge on his bum ,I just want to cuddle it.

yaddayule · 27/11/2007 11:06

In answer to OP, I did ask my friend about her dd's birthmark (would have seemed odd not to mention it)

My mum did mention that a very odd nurse hissed at her shortly after having dd that she had the mark of the devil, my mum told her to feck off, other than that can't remember

quickdrawmcgraw · 27/11/2007 11:29

Ds had/has a strawberry mark on his forehead and although I didn't like peoples' comments about it I loved it myself. It was always so soft and warm and so much a part of him. I've put a pic on my profile to show how it's faded.

dd has a Mongolian birthmark at the base of her spine which I got all panicky about when she was a baby as I thought it was a bruise. Yes, my PFB.

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 27/11/2007 11:33

DD has a very small birth mark on her face, it just looks like a little lump now. So tiny, its hardly noticable. Strangely, I have the same thing, in exactly the same place on my face.

cazboldy · 27/11/2007 11:34

ds3 has 2. one brown one in his hair (you cant see it now, but it was visible as a baby) and a strawberry mark on his chest.

tibsy · 27/11/2007 12:17

thanks yadda

quickdraw - what a handsome little man you can see dd's in the top photo of my profile, its also on the underside of her chin, but you cant see at that angle.

its funny that quite a few of you have marks in the same places as your lo's

Dd2(3 months) has a large, raised strawberry birthmark on her arm, 1 on her shoulder and 1 on her head but these are both small.
Dd1(2 1/2) had a stork mark and her face and neck which have pretty much faded unless she is too hot.

yes my ds2 has the same as spod describes a salmon patch/stork patch one one eyelid/low forehead - think it's on my profile as he is there
It seems to be fading and some people have asked is it a birthmark, wil it fade, my MIL is the only one who has said
shame it's there

I like it, find it character enhancing

Ds3 has v cute red birth mark on his bottom which may or may not grow as a strawberry haemangioma. HV said it would be something for his girlfriends to discover .

Ds2 has a cafe au lait splodge over his left wrist and upper hand. It wasn't visible until we moved to Oz for a year and it 'developed' in the sunshine. It faded on return to the UK through the winter but became visible again in the (precious little) sunshine that we had through the summer.

katybump · 27/11/2007 12:44

my dd has a big one right between her eyes.had loads of nasty comments about it but have learnt to ignore them.i started a thread a while back about the attitude of people about them.there are some pics on my profile

mustsleep · 27/11/2007 12:50

ds has one on his chin and unfortunetly it's quite dark and becuase of the placement of it it looks as though he has been eating chocs messily!!

it's never bothered but he has just started coming home from school asking why he has it etc, so i think that some of the other kids have been asking him about it - i hope they start picking on him about it

never sure what to say when he asks me why he has it

yomellamoHelly · 27/11/2007 12:51

Ds2 has a strawberry (size of 10p coin on his arm. Looks like it ought to be sore, but he's fine with it. Feels like everyone comments on it (but I had one so really am not bothered by it). He also has what looks like a bruise between his eyes. Both appeared within a couple of weeks of him being born.

katybump · 27/11/2007 13:01

spinspinsugar did you you use to be kamikyzed?

XAliceInWonderlandX · 27/11/2007 13:12

ds has a double looking strawberry birthmark on his forehead

it has never bothered im or us but children have been concerned that he has hurt himself, or on one occasion when i told a young child what it was he thought it was some strawberry jam.

it is fading now

bottersnike · 27/11/2007 13:19

Ds2 has a lovely heart-shaped light brown birthmark on the back of his leg - very cute, and I love it.
I have one on my stomach which did amazing things when I was pregnant, and another one at the base of my spine that I didn't know about till dh found it

I think they've lovely, and I don't understand people who class them and freckles as "blemishes".

tibsy · 27/11/2007 13:38

spinspin and katy - your girlies are gorgeous

bottersnike - lol at your dh 'finding' the mark on your back

Greensleeves · 27/11/2007 20:14

My ds2 has one on his face, near his left eye. I've just had my first ever conversation with him about it as it happens - he didn't know it was there until he saw me looking at old photos. His is a strawberry haemangioma - it's not very noticeable now (although I still get the odd stupid remark) but when he was littler it caused a huge amount of anguish because it was a) very very noticeable and b)was pushing his eyeball out of shape, we were very lucky it started to recede on its own, just as he was about to be started on intralesional steroid injections. If you look on my profile the top picture shows him at around 8 months when it was really prominent and a threat to his eyesight. The next one down shows him very recently, at 3.4 - it's still there, but much less obvious and no longer affecting his eye or his developing face shape.
