My house looks horrible on right move what to do?

In its price bracket it is up with 4 other properties, 2 on a busy road and 1 on a roundabout and the 4th is a couple of doors down that has a really terrible extension, we looked at it 3 years ago when we bought our current house but decided against it. What should we do about the outside? It doesn't help that the estate agent took the photo on bin day so they are full but it looks awful

Get the agent back to take another pic - you are the customer, make them earn their money. Bin day, FGS. Is there anything you can do to improve the outside - does it need repainting, or the garden tidying up?

SpaceCadet · 21/08/2006 20:34

have you got a link, can have a look and see, it might not look as bad as you think, however, you can insist that they take new photos if you are not happy, did you approve the details before it was uploaded?

Xena · 21/08/2006 20:34

Both painting and new driveway needed.

i remember when i was selling my house, the agent took a pic when i had a skip outside!
made him come back when it had gone

Xena · 21/08/2006 20:37

The trouble is that I'm sure it will put people off offering near the asking price, even though the jobs needing doing are reflected in the asking price iyswim?

OP posts:
SpaceCadet · 21/08/2006 20:38

thats a shame, could look at it from someone elses perspective.
if you are really unhappy though, i would insist that the agent copmes and takes new pics.

gillybabys · 21/08/2006 20:39

im in the same boat, jus negotiatin with other estate agents cheaper rates

Xena · 21/08/2006 20:40

I'm happy with the agents in general but we are really keen to go and want to shift quickly

edam · 21/08/2006 20:41

See what response you get and start painting if it's slow. Can you get the agent to take the pic so driveway doesn't look too bad?

Xena · 21/08/2006 20:41

Are you not happy with your agents gilly?

OP posts:
Xena · 21/08/2006 20:43

I think I'm going to have to tell them to come and retake the photo as I'm not happy at all with it. Edam yes thats what I was just saying to DH that when we get back from holiday we will have to paint it.

hulababy · 21/08/2006 20:45

Can you park your (or someone else's) car on the drive, to cover most of it?

How about some pots of bright flowers by the door to brighten it up and detract from the paint that needs doing?

LIZS · 21/08/2006 20:52

A photo won't stop people buying it tbh but a decent agent should update the main shot every few weeks anyway. As long as your price reflects the bits and pieces which need doing a serious buyer should see beyond it.

Get some flowers/plants on the front to screen the worst bits (not too many though or it will look like overload) and if you are in when they come around be picky about the angle they take it from and ask them to take several for you to choose the best one.

gillybabys · 21/08/2006 20:52

my agent took a pic with skip outside, not had much interest too

noddyholder · 21/08/2006 21:06

This happened to us so we asked for more photos and it sold the next day!Ask the agents to re do the pics with you telling them where you want the photos taken It worked for us Good luck!!

Actually I don't think the pic is so bad . Have it retaken without the bins and pref no car parked across , blue sky etc. Not sure whether the greenery by window is plants or weeds (sorry!) so if you had some plants in troughs or pots it might be clearer. Also some flowers in the window to "invite" the potential viewer in. If you decide to paint outside do the door a different colour, a period blue or red perhaps. Can they add internal and rear shots to it too ?

Xena · 21/08/2006 21:22

Unfortunatly the people before us changed the orig door to UPVC

OP posts:
hulababy · 21/08/2006 21:26

That doesn't look anywhere near as bad as I was expecting!

Move the bins, remove the greenery in front of window and replace with pots of bright flowers.

Car not needed as drive doesn't look ba din picture.

You could add interest/colour, without painting, to the walls by adding a nice door number plate on the wall to side of the door.

Agree about having fresh flowers on window sill, easily visable from outside.

80sMum · 21/08/2006 21:38

When we were trying to sell, I wasn't happy with the agent's pics so submitted some of my own which were much better. Unlike the agent, who's only there for a few minutes, you can wait for the sun to come out, move the bins, compare pics and choose the best, get a nice pic of the garden just after you've mown the lawn etc.
maybe you could get a few ready-planted pots and plonk them in the front, to brighten up the entrance?
For waht it's worth, your house doesn't look that bad. The same photo with a blue sky and minus the bins would do it more justice.

hairymclary · 21/08/2006 21:43

that pic isn't that bad. I think your house just looks a bit grey compared to the neighbours.
If you get a chance then take some pics on a sunnier day and see if they can use them.
tbh though I think people will appreciate the house and the area it's in and you shouldn't have a problem

Xena · 21/08/2006 21:48

Thanks guys I was thinking that you were all going to say 'Yuck is that where you live' I think that flowers by the door would be a good plan. I might try taking my own photo too.
