Tumble dry them.

coppertop · 17/03/2004 08:05

LOL Twiglett!

bunny2 · 17/03/2004 08:11

Def tumble dry, otherwise they are like cardboard.

hoxtonchick · 17/03/2004 08:12

tumble dry & NO fabric conditioner (reduces the absorbancy)

Furball · 17/03/2004 08:32

Apparently vinegar works well. Maybe some of the coth nappy people can help? Same sort of thing???

hercules · 17/03/2004 08:34

On another thread someone suggested coke in your machine (the drink that is).

fisil · 17/03/2004 08:35

I was told "fluffy towels bad, coarse towels good" apparently they're more absorbant!

I don't agree, but it's a nice excuse.

We don't have a tumble dryer at the moment (moved recently) and I take my towels to the launderette because I want them fluffy! They are no good unless you tumble them IMO

momof2 · 17/03/2004 09:38

I wash them at 60 deg. and without conditioner then tumble dry - this seems to keep them soft an fluffy.

katierocket · 17/03/2004 10:34

twiglett, I know my towel envy was brought on when we went to stay with DP's Brother and wife and they live in a house like something out of Living etc with hotel towels to match.

I have tumble dryer but didn't realise about not putting in conditioner (thought that would make them more scratchy?). Perhaps it's time to get rid of the 4 year old towels? I suspect the fluff has just been rubbed away.

KR - from what I understand about adding conditioner - it makes the towels less absorbant. Think I picked up a leaflet in John Lewis once when I bought the last set of towels - and that told me how to wash them.

Towel Care
Just found this on Christy's website

Linea do beautiful towels (House of Fraser own brand homeware, some of it is really lovely)
I've got the ones at the bottom of this page and they are fab

katierocket · 17/03/2004 12:11

thank you fellow towel lovers. CD - they look good and not expensive.

They are, really soft and ribbed and fluffy. Look like something from a spa.

Linea Home really do have some nice stuff and not expensive

throckenholt · 17/03/2004 12:52

we use vinegar instead of fabric conditioner because we use cloth nappies - it makes no difference to the softness for us - our towels are like cardboard !

I think it is the movement of tumble drying that helps - if your rub towels they become softer. Also someone suggested hanging out in frosty weather, but I think it is probably just the blowing in the wind that helps. I have contemplated sticking them back in for a spin when they are dry (don't have a tumble drier), but have got better things to do !

collision · 17/03/2004 13:02

They have to be tumble dried. In fact when I left home at 21, my Mum said, 'Say goodbye to soft fluffy towels!!' Had no idea what she was talking about until I radiator-dried my towels and they were stiff as a board! I now have a TD and they are SO soft!

Demented · 17/03/2004 18:39

I am in the minority, I like mine like cardboard.

My towels are threadbare and have holes in them, and definitely not fluffy. I really should smarten up my act

CountessDracula · 18/03/2004 12:26

Demented you are (demented)! Do you also like bathing in cold water and using sunlight soap to wash your hair? You are in the wrong century

hmc get some new towels!

Demented · 18/03/2004 14:17

Nothing like a nice crisp clean towel to wrap around you after your warm/hot shower (honest I do have hot running water ), then you feel it going all soft as it absorbs all the water. I don't like towels when they are too new, no fabric conditioner, vinegar used on them and I don't have a tumble dryer. I do like when they have been line dried on a windy day and naturally softened though. DS2's nappies get the same treatment, he has a soft fleece liner next to him bum and first time he pees they soften up anyway.
