Would you accept a pushchair that was on the shop floor, for a reduced price ?

We ordered our new LO's pushchair last week, I was told there were none in stock but as soon as one arrived we would be contacted.
John Lewis have just called me to say that the buggy we ordered Mamas and Papas Pliko Quattro Travel system in Dot to Dot, has been discontinued as they have brought out a slightly different model and the price has gone up from £385 to £435 for the new model. However, we could have the pushchair that had been on the shop floor at a reduced price of £345, saving £90 on the new one.
She ran through the spec with me and it is exactly the same, literally identical. I have looked through my 2 mamas and papas books and can see the only different is the new buggy has different wheels, same size just has 5 triangle shaped holes instead of 5 round shaped holes.

I have said I will take the shopfloor one on the proviso there is nothing wrong with it, she has assured me it is immaculate, have never been taken out of the shop etc etc.
What would you do ?

I'd go for it!

Familytree · 15/08/2006 14:11

Take it. Will it still have a year/2 years guarantee?

If it's the one I really wanted then yes I'd be chuffed at getting such a bargain.

proudofmyboobs · 15/08/2006 14:12

I would... but would have haggled for more than £40 discount depending on how long it has been on the shop floor

FoghornLeghorn · 15/08/2006 14:14

POMY, I thought that when I had put the phone down. I might give it a try when I go yo collect it.

This is the one

Yes I would buy it, although I think my dh would probably push for them to take a little bit more off the price, because they are only letting you have £40 off the original price.

Fimbo · 15/08/2006 14:16

oops crossed with POMB.

FoghornLeghorn · 15/08/2006 14:16

Ok what would be a reasonable amount for me to expect them to take off ? DH will kill me if I haggle, he gets so embarrassed

Well I would point out to them it is now last year's model. It has been on the shop floor for people to try out etc etc. Ask them for the very best price they could do for you, because you feel £40 off is not very much. Or try offering them say £300 and see what they say. At the end of the day it is probably in their best interests to get rid of the "older" model.

FoghornLeghorn · 15/08/2006 14:43

OK, I will try my luck with £300 and see how I get on. Should I ring them or just tackle it when I go to collect it do you think ?

We got our travel system cheaper cos it was and end-of-line one that had been used for display.

There was nothing wrong with it and it's still working perfectly to this day, nearly 2 years on!

Fimbo · 15/08/2006 14:46

Ring them, you know what it is like, the assistant won't be able to make that decision, she'll need to speak to a manager, the manager will be "at lunch" etc etc. Better to get it agreed before you go and remember to get the person's name. (Sorry if stating the obvious).

suzywong · 15/08/2006 14:46

Hell, yes

FoghornLeghorn · 15/08/2006 15:30

OK am going to ring them now. I feel all nervous, hate doing this kind of thing

OP posts:
Fimbo · 15/08/2006 15:32

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

wheelsonthebus · 15/08/2006 15:33

john lewis do GREAT discounts for stuff on the shop floor. i would definitely get it. go for it.

wheelsonthebus · 15/08/2006 15:34

ps; make sure you ring manufacturer afterwards for an instruction leaflet. we have had a maclarens pushchair for 2 years and on hols in suffolk i discovered two new things it can do (extended leg rest, that kind of thing)

EvesMama · 15/08/2006 15:37

make sure you get a guarantee as people will have been 'trying it out' in shop..plus haggle to £300 deff!..they want rid as they cant advertise it no more..they either sell for £45 cheaper or lose a £300 sale???

FoghornLeghorn · 15/08/2006 15:44

Just called but there was no answer from that department so I got their email address and have now sent an email.
I lied and said the woman I spoke to earlier said I would be able to make an offer on payment and £300 is my offer considering how long it has been on the shop floor etc.
What a cheeky monkey !

Well done Foggy!!! Let's hope they go for it!

proudofmyboobs · 15/08/2006 20:15

Excellent!!! I hope they agree to it

eidsvold · 15/08/2006 23:33

i did and it has been a fab buggy.

FoghornLeghorn · 17/08/2006 09:48

HA !

Just got an email from someone at JL advising they would be prepared to offer me the buggy at a reduced price of £350. WTF ? This is more than the woman initially mentioned on the phone, and I had mentioned that in my email.
Have now emailed back saying I am only prepared to pay £300 and if that is acceptable I will be there at the weekend to collect it. also reiterated that it was no last years model and that it would've had some wear and tear due to it being on the shop floor

Fingers Crossed

OP posts:
LIZS · 17/08/2006 10:01

Good luck ! Have you checked any other offers around on it as it is discontinued. JL do a price promise guarantee ("never knowingly undersold" )so they should allow whatever deduction for display goods (usually 10% is the norm or more if there are defects) against the lowest local price.

FoghornLeghorn · 17/08/2006 10:12

Thanks Liz, What would 10% of £385 be ?
Useless at math
