Have only just seen this terrible news. Have no idea whereabouts in Spain SP is - hopefully far away. Isn't whymummy in Spain too? It's just horrific

me too - i've just emailed her, i don't know if she's in the madrid area either

AussieSim · 11/03/2004 20:43

She is in Granada so should be OK I guess.

My husband is in Madrid though, but is OK. He hates public transport and was in a taxi on his way to work when the bombs went off. Thankfully he called me before I saw it on the Telly.

spacemonkey · 11/03/2004 20:44

omg AussieSim, thank god he is alright!

marthamoo · 11/03/2004 20:45

Thanks for that, AussieSim - feel a bit reassued. Glad your dh is OK - it's so scary.

How scary AussieSim. Glad you got good news very early then.

We were in Kenya when the bomb went off there, in Nairobi in 1998. We knew nothing about it for 3 days as on safari - not near the city. But our parents weren't sure where we were and were really worried trying to contact us.

spacemonkey · 11/03/2004 20:50

Just got email from SenoraPostrophe - she is OK!

Hulababy · 11/03/2004 20:54

Brilliant

whymummy · 11/03/2004 21:06

thanks for asking marthamoo,i'm from spain but live in england,we have family and friends in madrid but they're ok,one of my cousins was on the same train yesterday morning and another one was supposed to be on that train this morning to go to university but the students were on strike today so he didn't go,i've just had my dad on the phone again and he was crying telling me about the victims, children and pregnant women among the dead,i'm so sad and angry, i still can't believe it

marthamoo · 11/03/2004 21:08

Thanks for that, sm - glad to hear it.

Must be particularly hard for you, whymummy, it's just so pointless, isn't it? I'm glad your family are OK.

whymummy · 11/03/2004 21:19

thanks MM it is,so so pointless
aussiesim i'm so glad your husband is ok

AussieSim · 11/03/2004 21:24

Thanks for all the well wishes. My DH is supposed to be going back to Madrid again next week but doesn't want to. He doesn't think it will be safe given the elections and everything. He is waiting to hear from his HQ in Paris if they will let him work from a different office. Fingers crossed.

whymummy · 11/03/2004 21:47

my sister has just told me that AL QEDA has phoned an english newspaper to claim responsabilty, the spanish police has also found a tape in arabic, whoever did this wants rotting in hell

CountessDracula · 11/03/2004 21:49

Nightmare. Mate of mine was there today but is now home, said it was dreadful. I only found out about this tonight, have been watching news24, looks so frightening.

ScummyMummy · 11/03/2004 21:54

So many are dead and injured- what an awful awful tragedy.
So glad you and your families are ok Senora, AussieSim and Whymummy.

eddm · 11/03/2004 22:30

The horror of it is hard to take in. Is there something about having given birth that makes this even harder to understand? If you could ever understand it anyway... but there's something about having been through that primeval experience of giving life that makes someone taking it away even more abhorrent than before, if that makes any sense at all. I've lived through IRA campaigns in London but this is just on such an appalling scale...

suzywong · 11/03/2004 22:34

very good point eddm, the IRA was vile but post kids this is all the more visceral. TBH I have to be rather head-in-the-sand about things like this as I cannot bear the thought of those lives destroyed so senselessly.
So glad everyone's family is OK, will email my Madridian who lives in London, just to see if her family is OK, but if they aren't what can I do?

emmatmg · 12/03/2004 07:29

I just can not think about this without being absolutley terrified. Looking at the pictures my heart breaks for all the victims and their families.

If it is Al-queda, it scares me to death that according to the news last night we (the UK) are the only ones left who haven't been attcked.

My thoughts and feelings are with everyone in Spain today and I pray that one day we can all live in peace.

SueW, I'm a pessimist(sp?) to the core and soooooooo wish I could could think more like you

bossykate · 12/03/2004 08:27

whymummy and aussiesim, glad everything ok for you. this is really terrible. tbh, i don't understand why no-one has done a similar attack here, it would be easy enough

marthamoo · 12/03/2004 09:13

I was working in Manchester when the two smaller IRA bombs went off at Christmas-time. We were evacuated and were thinking it was all a bit of a laugh (thought it was a hoax) when the second bomb went off. We moved a bit more quickly after that. I missed the huge IRA bomb in Manchester because I had a hangover - was supposed to be meeting a friend for some retail therapy but cried off because I'd been out the night before and was feeling worse for wear. Ironically, the hangover was a short-lived side effect of my night out - had a long-term one too - ds1 was conceived that night

I agree, it all seems much worse when you have children - I was pregnant with ds2 on September 11th and I was so frightened for my son and my unborn child. The world has gone mad

Clarinet60 · 12/03/2004 10:04

Agree sueW and marthamoo.
I was minutes away from several IRA bombs in London, but that was pre-children. It's all so much more frightening now.

M2T · 12/03/2004 10:12

When 9/11 happened ds was only about 6wks old. I remember watching it live on TV with ds in my arms thinking "what have done bringing a child into THIS". I'm pregnant with No2 and the same thoughts are flying about my head now. It is trully awful. My heart goes out to all the victims and to Spanish people all over the world. It must be sickening to watch these animals creating so much destruction.

Where will it end?? This is really something that could happen anywhere, no train station can stop people with bags getting on them.

Very frightening and distressing.

Azure · 12/03/2004 10:41

Glad to hear that everyone's loved ones are safe. What an appalling, terrible thing. DH is in Madrid next week on a business trip which is unlikely to be cancelled - my view is that the damage has sadly already been done there, it's unlikely to happen again. Living in London and catching a crowded tube to & from work I live in dread of something similar happening here - depressingly, I think it's only a matter of time.

SenoraPostrophe · 12/03/2004 10:50

Thanks for the thought, Marthamoo.

We're all OK, though I haven't spoken to everyone I know with family in Madrid yet. I've been really busy, so it was only this morning that I realised quite how bad the bombings were.

As to who did it - nobody knows. Al Quaida have claimed responsibility for attacks they didn't carry out before and the timing would suggest ETA, but they usually claim responsibility. In some ways I hope it was ETA as it would lose them a lot of support.
