my dh was driving tonight along a main road when some idiot speeding came out from a side road we hit the side of his car he was going so fast that he carried on to hit another car in the opposite side road. He hadnt stopped at the give way signs.

Thankfully my dd was in her carseat.

She is unharmed but if she had been in my arms it would have been a different story. I was wearing a seat belt but was still flung forward and was hurt slightly.
I hope that in posting this anyone tempted to hold a baby in a car thinks twice. My car seat cost £40 from mothercare, my car isnt driveable but my baby hasnt got a scratch on her the onmly one in the car that wasnt hurt at all. And i was just poppimng out about ten minutes from home. Please keep your children safe.

oh littleducks so glad that the outcome was good!
Bet you are very shakey though.

Angeliz · 07/08/2006 21:37

So glad you're all o.k.
It beggars belief that anyone would put a child or baby in a car without proper restraints.

tenalady · 07/08/2006 21:38

phew, well done, hope you dont get too many aches and pains from the accident its amazing how shock manifests itself in later days.

WideWebWitch · 07/08/2006 21:39

Glad you're all ok, how terrifying.

hulababy · 07/08/2006 21:40

Glad to hear you are all safe, and the little one didn't get hurt at all.

Glad that you are ok, has anyone said you should replace your car seat as you should after an accident.

biglips · 07/08/2006 22:04

crikey.... Glad you are all ok xx

Kiskidee · 07/08/2006 22:09

a lot of recent immigrants, nurses from india, go to my church. they frequently hold babies in their laps. i have mentioned it to more than one but sometimes they don't get it. they still go ahead and do it.

Kiskidee · 07/08/2006 22:10

glad you and yours are ok little ducks

Littleducks! OMG - glad your all ok xxx

burstingbug · 07/08/2006 22:28

Oh my god! Glad you are all ok, what an awful shock for you, dh and dd.
Some people are real pratts on the road
I must admit that I sometimes have ds on my lap, but thats only if I unexpectedly get a lift or taxi - no more than a 20 min drive max. I put the seat belt over the both of us and hold on to him. Neither me or dh drive but we do have car seats. They'll be no excuses now, if we don't have a seat with us then we'll walk or bus! Couldn't bear anything to happen to my lo's.

hulababy · 07/08/2006 22:29

burstingbug - please never ever put a seat belt round both of you, even if you do have to put baby on your lap. It is far more dangerous to your baby to be strapped to you in this way - even in a smaller crash you would crush baby. Ds has a better chance of survival out of the seat belt.

cazboldy · 07/08/2006 22:40

It's so nice to see that other people feel the same way about this. I had a car accident just over 3 years ago now, with my ds and dd in the car. Both were strapped in their seats, and only suffered minimal bruising from the straps. The other driver had been drinking and was travelling at (according to the police) in excess of the speed limit, and didn't even try to stop when he met us.
Anyway to cut a long story short, I have recently fallen out with my sister and my mother because she let her ds aged 2 and a half ride without a seat in her car "because he doesn't like the seat"
I probably did over react at the time, but I just think that people always think " it will never happen to me" and children are soooo precious.
I told her that I believed that the car seats were all that had saved my children from serious injury and that what was more important her ds or 5 mins peace?
She said "whatever" and drove off leaving me really upset.
Half an hour later my mum rang me up and had a go at me for telling my sister that I thought she was a crap mum which I hadn't said.
I tried to explain about the car seat thing and my mum said "well we didn't have them when you were little and you're ok!"
It makes me so and
Glad you are all ok.

Caligula posted this AA leaflet on another thread. It covers the effects of one seat belt round adult and child on page 8.

littleducks · 07/08/2006 22:51

burstingbug, i really hope that some good can come from this and that i can spread this to as many people as possible, my journey was across town-less than 20 minutes- and as i mentioned i was only 5 minutes from home, please remember this and however tempting it may be don't accept lifts or go in a cab even when its raining and cold. But please dont feel awkward i know the temptations myself but just wanted to warn everyone.
Thank you jelly jelly for mentioning about a new carseat, i was surprised as dd was put back in it to go to hosp in ambulance but that just goes to show that the people who see accidents regularly dont take any risks.

Glad you are all OK littleducks.

Burstingbug, please do look at Hula's post and lemonaid's link, putting your seatbelt round your child is incredibly dangerous.

burstingbug · 07/08/2006 23:17

We won't be doing it again! Rest assured. No seat= no travel

littleducks · 07/08/2006 23:22

good to hear and while im on does anyone know what i should do with the car seat? i dont want some one else to use it, if i took it to local dump i suspect it might be sold on by the men who work there, ive seen them selling pushchairs etc. in the past, could i take it back to mothercare or should i try to break it so nobody would want to use it?

OP posts:
burstingbug · 07/08/2006 23:25

Don't think mothercare would do anything other than maybe dispose of it for you ?? Personally I'd break it up myself and dispose of it, therefore you know that no one will be able to use it again.

littleducks · 07/08/2006 23:29

hmmm, might try to break it up then, just thought maybe when i buy new seat that the shop could put it with their waste as someone is less likely to pick it out and sell it at a car boot or ebay or something.

misdee · 07/08/2006 23:29

i removed all the covers and straps, blackbagged all that, then put the seat out for the binmen.

burstingbug · 07/08/2006 23:31

Depends if you trust their staff and cleaners. My dh works in a shop, and I get hear what some staff and cleaners do!

littleducks · 07/08/2006 23:35

misdee will do that re straps & cover, but we live in flats with communal bins so i wouldnt be able to put the plastic shell in there, but if i seperate it that would probably work. Thanks.
