my dh was driving tonight along a main road when some idiot speeding came out from a side road we hit the side of his car he was going so fast that he carried on to hit another car in the opposite side road. He hadnt stopped at the give way signs.

Thankfully my dd was in her carseat.

She is unharmed but if she had been in my arms it would have been a different story. I was wearing a seat belt but was still flung forward and was hurt slightly.
I hope that in posting this anyone tempted to hold a baby in a car thinks twice. My car seat cost £40 from mothercare, my car isnt driveable but my baby hasnt got a scratch on her the onmly one in the car that wasnt hurt at all. And i was just poppimng out about ten minutes from home. Please keep your children safe.

Before you dismantle it, is there anywhere you can go to get it checked out? It might be fine. As long as the frame and straps are undamaged it should be fine. Perhaps Halfords or AA or someone like that?

littleducks - so sorry to hear your story. Do look after yourself as sometimes shock can be delayed. I was hit by a car in June and it took a few days to realise I had delayed shock.

Also, I would say, on a practical front. Take photos of your car seat, of it destroyed and keep the receipt for your new one for claiming on the insurance, that way it will cost the other cars insurer rather than your own pocket to replace it.

sorry to hear about the accident, littleducks, glad you are all ok. I would have been so if it was me!

just a thought as well, don't send the car to rainbow bodyshop - I know you are local to me. It took them three weeks to fix ours last month! They seem to be short staffed.

Cazboldy, unless you actually murdered your sister, then I really don't think you over-reacted at all.

Glad to hear you and your family are OK littleducks. But don't be surprised if the reaction sets in over the next few days. Emotional reaction, that is.

In Dundee at the weekend, we were in a supermarket petrol station. Beside was a car, with two men in the front, two women and five kids in the back. The women had seatbelts on, as did the two men in the front, the kids were standing up,climbing over seats etc, and there was a small baby there, who was on the mother's knee. We followed them along the road, and the kids were still climbing around the car.
I jus tsat there open mouthed. I try really hard not to judge people, but in this case there was no excuse for their stupidity and selfishness, because i think it is very selfish to put children at risk like that. it's almost as if the adults thought,"well we are ok cos we have belts on"

Anyway littleducks, hope you are all ok

Thanks for the warning about the bodyshop Kelly but unfortunately i dont think there is anyone who would be able to fix it, the engine and bonnet is a mangled mess, it will definately be a write off. We have got "details" of the other driver but im suspicous and think that he didnt have insurance, so im sure that the drama will continue on that front. I was so angry at him, when it happened as he got out of his car and immediately phoned someone (i think he needed advice to get his story straight) leaving a little girl trapped in the car as the doors on the passenger side had gone in with the impact and wouldnt open. I had to go and get her out, with my baby in my arms, while he was on the phone fgs and she was so scared because she couldnt get out. It wasnt his child btw.

whereabouts did you have the accident littleducks? Make sure you do claim for a car seat. If he hasnt got insurance, you can sue the person directly I think.

dmo · 08/08/2006 09:11

i get so cross
at drivers who continual to drive with no insurance
as you have said no child should travel in a car without a carseat
i am a c/m and have 5 carseats in the car some idiot drove into back of me (no insurance) and as well as mending my car myself i had i replace the 5 carseats so which had only been used a couple of times

JennT · 08/08/2006 09:14

Motor Insurers Bureau are help out victims of uninsured drivers. Your insurance company will let you know about that.

dmo · 08/08/2006 09:16

they didnt

JennT · 08/08/2006 09:37

Then your solicitor should have done and if they didn't then they aren't doing their job.
