Right, what do I really need in my nappy bag as mine is out of hand

MrsFogi · 30/07/2006 20:15

it weighs a tonne and is full to bursting point as every time I try to prune it my imagination runs wild on what I might possibly need when out with dd (6 mths) - what do I really need in it?

OP posts:
Bozza · 30/07/2006 20:20

Depends how long you are going to be out for. But possibly empty stuff out when possible. For your average 2-3 hour trip out:

2-3 nappies (change before you go out)
2-3 nappy bags
travel pack of wipes
bib
bottle/snack as required
rattle
dummy if required
change of clothes if baby is messy (should be fairly minmal in this weather)
sunhat

and that is probably more than enough IMO.

Nemo1977 · 30/07/2006 20:22

agree as above.
I have a large handbag that carries all the above for dd[7mths] and ds [2.9yrs] well except ds doesnt need the nappy stuff.

lexiemum · 30/07/2006 20:25

mine currently has (3yr and 10mth):

changing mat
2 nappies
3 nappy bags
travel baby wipes
sudocream
change of clothes
muslin
spare undies for dd2 and her foldable toilet seat

add bottle and food as required.

FanjoandZooey · 30/07/2006 20:27

Sudocrem. Not often needed but when it is you will be so glad you had it.

Suncream if you use it.

I also have witch hazel spray for bites, stings, etc, germolene and plasters in mine, but I have a 3 year old.

misdee · 30/07/2006 20:29

mine (dd3 17months + 2 older dd's), 2 nappies, one wrap, wipes, washable nappy bag for dirty nappies (sling them under the buggy afterwards), water bottles, raisans, small purse of loose change for car park fees, cheque book, purse, small toy, peters disabled badge, hmmmmmm think it needs sorting out.

7up · 30/07/2006 20:33

nappies, wipes, plasters, bibs, tissues, sudocream, purse, plastic cutlery set!,red health book,

add food/drink as necessary

Bozza · 30/07/2006 20:37

Yes omitted suncream from mine for a 6 month old. 7up do you really carry the red book? Think mine would end up fairly dogeared if I did that.

I now am in the envious position of not having a nappy bag with a 5 and 2 yo. Today we went to a fancy dress party and DD was a princess. She carried her own spare pair of pants in her little glittery handbag.

lanismum · 30/07/2006 21:59

dear god mine is full of crap, as well as the usual nappies, wipes, nappy sacks, snacks, drink, i also have a tape measure, pad, pens, hair bands, water spray, plasters, calpol, some out of date antibiotic, piriton, calpol, scissors, i pod, camera, batteries (dead and fresh) frog shakey toy thingy, swim nappy, eyeliner, old bills, 11 quid in loose change, sim card, er, think thats it, but iv not gone through all the pockets.

lanismum · 30/07/2006 22:01

needless to say, i cant be arsed to clear it all out, so iv chucked it all back in, you never know when you will need a piriton

Charlee · 30/07/2006 22:05

i carry a ton in my changing bag!

Nappys 5-6
Change of clothes
Wipes
Nappy Bags
Bum cream
Drink/snack
sunhat/sun cream (when hot)
Calpol
DS's Medical history book

And thats just for DS!

I also carry

Purse
Mobile
Pen and small note pad
Pregnacy Notes
Paracetamol
Carrier bag (i often feel the need to vomit in the car)
passport

WideWebWitch · 30/07/2006 22:08

a nappy
wipes
that's it
god, first baby I carried a million things when I went out, second a nappy in my handbag.

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 30/07/2006 22:13

Change of clothes = 1 sleepsuit (the one you least like so it can live in your bag)
Don't take a fullsize pack of wipes or the whole box of nappy sacks. Put each nappy inside a sack and slip a travel pack of wipes in one - takes up much less space. (have started using disps for out&about)
Get rid of any comedy clownsized keyrings (although those trolley token ones are handy.)

Enid · 30/07/2006 22:32

i have dd3 (13 weeks)

have three nappies, wipes and a sleepsuit

dear god what else do you need???

Enid · 30/07/2006 22:32

mine are all in a free sponge bag that came with a mag

in my normal bag

plus it has spare pants for dd2

Enid · 30/07/2006 22:34

i have tea tree/witch hazel cream for general three girl out and about problems too

and crayons and notebook (the MOST essential thing IMo with older children)

lanismum · 30/07/2006 22:35

enid, im so jealous, i really wish i could got out with just wipes, nappies and a change of clothes, but i really cant do it, the few times iv tried iv found i really need something iv taken out, i also have a load of stuff under the pram too, toys, spare shoes, jacket, hats, suncream, the list is endless.

expatinscotland · 30/07/2006 22:35

I'm going to start using my hand luggage w/wheels for mine.

Thomcat · 30/07/2006 22:38

I have 2 DDs, both of whom are in anppies.
I use my normal bag and carry 1 for the elder and 2 for the yopunger, plus wipes, and that's it.
If I'm out for the entire day then I'll chuck in a spare pair of bottoms for dd1 and a spare total change for dd2. if ther is a bit of redness already going on then I'll bung in a mini tub of sudo cream.

I also have a spare bottle and small carton of milk.
drink of water for dd2.
dummy
muslin
couple of rice cakes
soft toy each
muslin

ad that's it, at a max.

Enid · 30/07/2006 22:38

yes toys good when older

but really did you NEED them?

lanismum · 30/07/2006 22:39

at the min i also have a spade and few sand shape thingys, a bottle of water, quite a lot of sand and a drumstick under the pram, christ what is wrong with me........no wonder i always get charged for heavy suitcases at the airport

Enid · 30/07/2006 22:39

actually sometienms I have nothing

had to take dd3 to the hospital (boring story) and she shat herself in a BIG way, I had one old nappy, NO wipes, NO change of clothes

put new nappy on and went home

was not a biggie

MrsSpoon · 30/07/2006 22:39

LOL Enid, the more children you have the less you carry in your change bag IMO.

Used to carry the full monty with DS1, 5 nappies, wipes, handful of nappy sacks, two changes of clothes, nappy cream, etc, etc. With DS2 we got down to 2 nappies (cloth so take up more room) in washable bags which doubled up as nappy sacks for the dirty nappies, wipes, only took a change of clothes when DS2 was tiny and even then it was a babygro.

Enid · 30/07/2006 22:40

aha

the boot of my car differnet matter

have buckets, spades, folding seats, change of clothes for all three girls, picnic rug, big bottle water etc etc

lanismum · 30/07/2006 22:42

thank god i dont have a car then, god knows what i would have in the boot!

Thomcat · 30/07/2006 22:44

Oh - in my car - I have a holdall that has one of EVERYTHING. so if D and I are out and wanna spend the niht somewhere we can. I t has spare underpants for me and him, pjs for kids, food, water, quite a few nappies, toothbrushes, the lot.

Been asked to crash at mates a few timesand therefore am always prepared now.
