Would it be insane to go to IKEA this afternoon?

I'm thinking maybe lots of families will have gone off on holiday so it might not be so busy.

Is that wishful thinking?

ooh go! and can you get me a rakke wardrobe while you're there ta!

spidermama · 29/07/2006 14:03

I want a cupboard which I can lock. My baby ransacks every inch of my home now and I need to start clawing back some space.

Ikea could go either way though. It'll tip me into blind fury or give me the retail therapy I need to chill today.

But which? Hmmmm!

Lots of families stuck at home and bored with the holidays already, so doing a trip to Ikea - probably better today than tomorrow, though. Sundays always worse IMO.

AllieBongo · 29/07/2006 14:05

Even the evenings are hell on earth atm. I hate the holidays.

Last night we had

  • kids using the circular rugs as frisbees

  • told two girls off for diving into big baskets of cushions (lovely, big dirty footprints on everything, plus it's lots of little metal baskets, not one big one so lots of nice metal bars to whack their heads on)

  • walked through the home org department to see a 4/5 year old climbing 4 ft up an (unsecured) stack of shelves. Mum saw us, and told him to get down. We sneaked a look back, and as soon as she thought we'd gone he was back up there.

  • kids running around playing chase, running into other customers, chucking stuff on the floor, screaming, shouting. It's not a playground FFS! I'd be mortified if mine dared behave like that.

Kids running wild, parents stressed, hot and p'd off and obviously given up. Everyone else p'd off because of the annoying kids. Staff p'd off because everyone's grumpy and therefore extra rude and sarcastic when their ruddy curtains aren't there.

For the love of pete, DON'T GO!!!!!!!

(can you tell it was a bad night last night )

dmo · 29/07/2006 16:59

if you do go
dont take children

spidermama · 29/07/2006 17:20

Serenity . Not so serene after that little lot I bet.

I've decided to go this evening. I've had the kids on my own in this sty I'm forced to call home all day.

DH is really horrible and has been fannying around at his leisure in London all day, so I reckon the evening is mine.

I'll leave before dinner and return, having spent loads of money, after they're all in bed.

HA!

spidermama · 29/07/2006 17:28

Come noddy, come. I'd love your professional take on the Swedish store.

I have resolved never ever to go to Ikea again unless I smoke a really strong spliff beforehand. The last experience - two years ago - is still seared on my brain.

spidermama · 29/07/2006 17:54

I had one of those MI, but it was with the kids.

For me it would worse after a sliff.

I'm expecting it to be quieter this evening. Frankly, it shows the depths to which I'll sink to get out of this house at the moment.

It takes us 2/3 years between trips for the memories to blur sufficiently for us to think we want to go again. Bit like childbirth really.

motherinferior · 29/07/2006 17:56

Could I errrr suggest, Spidermama dearest, that you go somewhere that isn't IKEA?

spidermama · 29/07/2006 17:57

Lol mathamoo.
It's normally fine until the warehouse experience at the end. That's when I find myself fighting back tears.

Nowhere else is open MI. I'm not going to Sainsburys and I don't want a meal out on my own.

If only the Lewes flea markets were open late.

I'm in just the sort of post-stress haze which is conducive to floating around Ikea, Stepford wife style, in a retail trance.

Pub? Except it'll be full of trendy young things with somewhere to go and having a happening Saturday night, won't it...

OK, make it IKEA but have a bottle of wine chilling for your return.

all4girlz · 29/07/2006 18:12

no i think ikea on your own would probably be quite nice -I am looking forward to the new one opening near us --think you need a little time away every now and again
bobbing about then go home to a chilled glass of white!!

noddyholder · 29/07/2006 22:45

Blimey I didn't think you were serious!I would have come Next time you feel a bit stepford you know where I am!

heiferjamese · 30/07/2006 08:20

We have never had any problems going to Ikea. never been that busy either. Our nearest one is Bristol and doesn't seem that busy...

DD is usually very good, as long as we let her play in the childens bit...

Maybe I have just been very lucky though and picked less busy times.

Am actually looking forward to going soon (as decorating house but not yet ready for the extras).

We used to have to travel to Birmingham before Bristol opened, and that was a pain)...

MABS · 30/07/2006 10:21

i would have comee!! how was it Spidey?

spidermama · 30/07/2006 10:27

I didn't go Mabs. I stayed home and had the big argument with dh instead. It sounds grim I know but it has been brewing for some time now so it was good to finally have the row. The air feels a good deal clearer this morning.

Ikea is beckoning me very soon though, maybe in a week when I get back from the festival, so I'll let you know. It would be great to have company.

the best time to go is really early, check they have what you want on their site (although apparently doesn't always work) then head straight for the warehouse, get your stuff and go!
