is anyone else worried about their child at school in this heat?

i am.
they don't even have a fan in ds2 classroom and they have to play outside for 45 minutes at lunch time.
last night ds2 had a really bad sweat rash which had calmed down by morning but he actually woke in the night and said he was COLD ! how???

strangely though ds1 really wants to stay later at school tonight until 6pm for a computer club!

At our school they cancelled lunchtime playtime as it was too hot and kept them indoors in the shade.

southeastastra · 19/07/2006 13:39

not really, i think children cope with the heat better than the adults

mimi1uk · 19/07/2006 13:39

i was just wat hing the news and some schools ahve canceled sports day and sent some pupils home, hopefully the schools r being responsible 45 mins in this sun is along time tho,,

I'm concerned about dd today as she had swimming today so no point in putting suncream on - sent a message to make sure she applied her own after swimming, and she does have a hat, but you're never sure they'll apply it as thoroughly as you would yourself.

BettySpaghetti · 19/07/2006 13:46

There was a note up at DDs school saying they wouldn't be allowed out at break/lunch if they didn't have sunhats on.

I think even those with hats should be allowed to stay indoors in this heat though, if they wish. I have chosen to stay in other than 9-10am when I played in garden with DS (been too hot out there since).

sandyballs · 19/07/2006 13:47

They'll cope. They're not as fragile as we think

Blu · 19/07/2006 13:51

No, he is in cool loose clothing, they have set up a 'water station' and encourage frequent drinking, they have to wear hats / stay under the trees at playtime. Children in skimpy clothing were being sent home to change this morning!

It's hot, I expect some (maybe DS )might faint but that's hot summers for you.

It's making me think v hard about getting rid of my car and making more serious efforts in support of keeping climate change at bay.

beckybrastraps · 19/07/2006 13:52

Aren't you good blu?! It's making me think about changing my car too, to get one with air conditioning!

lucyep · 19/07/2006 14:13

Yes I am, but probably because dd2 has such a bad heart.

We have kept her off school.

Apparently one school in Portsmouth has closed today due to the temperature so I have seen on the local news.

franca70 · 19/07/2006 14:21

no, if kids manage to survive the heat say, in Sicily for a whole summer, they will here for a few days. It's just so nice not to have to worry about the wind! And schools here seem to be very sensible. ds and dd came back from nursery plastered in sun cream. I don't think it's gonna last either.

charliecat · 19/07/2006 14:23

Ive kept my 2 off. They are very pale skinned and id prefer they werent in the sun at all today.

Joanie · 19/07/2006 14:29

Yes -
DD has been so sweaty and tired every day after school this week it almost feels cruel to send her to school. Almost kept her off today. Tomorrow they are having a lunchtime picnic followed by a 'scavenger hunt' around the grounds. Hope they don't do this if it is as hot as today.
People realise that extreme cold is dangerous, but it annoys me that people seem to think its ok to work however high temperatures are.

franca70 · 19/07/2006 14:36

then three quarters of Europe would stop for more than three months, though

Mercy · 19/07/2006 14:39

dd's school has said that it will count as an authorised absence if any children are kept at home today because of the heat (rather than close the school completely)

Bozza · 19/07/2006 14:41

You are keeping your children off school because it is hot and sunny? Wish I could try that line on my boss!

charliecat · 19/07/2006 14:45

Im keeping my kids at home because I dont want them out in the BURNING sun today.

festiveface · 19/07/2006 14:59

i think you have done right charliecat. i wish i had done now.
i just know ds2 is going to have his prickly heat 10 times worse tonight, it was bad enough last night.
they will have played out at lunchtime, they actually had them do sports day on monday , they seemed to think that because they had said they could choose to sit out some of the races it was o.k but they were sat in the blazing sun

OP posts:
Bozza · 19/07/2006 15:01

But what are they going to do all day instead?

DS had his sports day on Monday and I thought it was really well organised with water, gazebos etc.

charliecat · 19/07/2006 15:04

DD had her sports day on Monday and they were sat in the sun and the headmaster said you will all be pleased to be going home with a suntan. Noone muttered a word, it was 30 degrees and people were scorched.
I took a huge brolly and stood behind dd and her friends wherever they sat.

sandyballs · 19/07/2006 15:09

I don't think it's a great example to set your kids tbh. Too hot, too cold, too wet, where does it stop. You just need to take the right precautions depending on the weather. I can't believe schools are actually closing because of a bit of sun. Unbelievable.

HellKat · 19/07/2006 15:09

I kept my ds1 off (14) because he faces a mile & a bit walk there & back, not fun wearing dark school uniform. Not surprisingly, most of the kids have been told by the parents today they can stay off. If we'd had a car, to ferry him back & forth, then he would've gone. Poor blighter suffers badly as it is with terrible hayfever.
It's horrendously hot indoors (we've got two huge cooling towers going) so really don't envy anyone being out in this. Also not fun being 32 weeks pg in it either

Bozza · 19/07/2006 15:12

I have to say I agree with sandyballs.

spidermama · 19/07/2006 15:13

Plenty of schools in Sussex cancelled school for the day. Others made the day shorter.

Ours cancelled sports day, but only at the last minute having made sure most people turned up.

spidermama · 19/07/2006 15:15

I would hate to be sitting in a hot institution forced into a polyester shirt or dress all day.

Grrrr! School uniform. (spits!)

Mercy · 19/07/2006 15:15

Sandyballs, I don't really have any views on whether schools should close or not. All I know is that one of the primary schools in this borough has no shaded area in its playgrounds and that the temperature reached 42 in the infants playground. Which is why it closed after lunch today - which is basically what they do in Spain etc
