is there any kind of portable air-con system that works?

or any other suggestions

(am not fitting air con in car .. too much money)

'Magicool', the one of the advert with the camel in it

NomDePlume · 18/07/2006 14:37

off

JackieNo · 18/07/2006 14:38

We have something similar to this - it's lovely. think it came from somewhere like Dixons.

LiliLaTigresse · 18/07/2006 14:39

strap them down, open the windows and drive FAST
that's what my dad used to do
now he has air con so he can drive slowly

suedonim · 18/07/2006 15:38

M&S sell battery fans, though I'm not sure about your 2yo having one, lol! The blades are soft so can't do any damage. Another idea is to put a damp tea towel or pillowcase on the children (face/body/wherever they'll let you!) and let air from the windows and the car fan blow over them. Take a bottle of water so you can keep re-wetting the cloth. Hth.

peasinapod · 18/07/2006 19:15

my friend told me about a sun visor that goes all over the back door so you can have the window down but the shade is still on the car ,in Spain you always see back windows with towels shut in the door to stop the sun shine getting in .

muma3 · 18/07/2006 19:19

water in a aerosol can i got a cheap version to MAGICOOL . it cost 99p and works

drosophila · 18/07/2006 19:20

A friend told me about freezing lots of 1.5 litre bottles of water and putting them in the footwells. Don't know if it works. I tried but I didn't do t in time so the bottles weren't frozen solid and I didn't have enough of them.

SoupDragon · 18/07/2006 19:30

Windowsox are good. They're the cover-your-window sunshades where you can have the window down.

SoupDragon · 18/07/2006 19:30

Supposedly bottles of ice in front of fans work.

poisson · 18/07/2006 19:30

HOW on eath do you knwo about his

Twiglett · 18/07/2006 19:42

are they really good soupy .. am about to buy them .. they're £23 .. are they really REALLY good . .on your dragon scales

The do cover the whole window unlike those poxy stick on sun shades and you can certainly open the windows which lets the air in if you're going along or if there's a breeze. Our car does have air con but it's pants at reaching the back. BabyDragon was nice and cool to the touch when we arrived for school pickup today. I only have on on her side - didn't bother putting the other one on.

it'll stop your children throwing stuff out or sticking their heads out the window too.]

I think hub2dee bought some too or was going to.

SoupDragon · 18/07/2006 19:53

Cod, I heard the "bottle of ice in front of fan" thing on the radio. Means the fan blows cold air rather than just moving hot air about.

Twiglett · 18/07/2006 19:59

yeah .. I bought 'em before you replied ... thanks though

I'm dangerous when I have a laptop and a credit card in my hand

Yep. Me too.

Bought DS1 some goggles yesterday and thought "Oh, I'm paying the postage, may as well buy BabyDragon some too for later..." She's not yet 6 months old!

hub2dee · 18/07/2006 20:08

DW chucked out the bloomin packaging from my outlook shades, so it looks like I might be stuck with them.

Soupy - Do your windowsoz look like they will last more than one summer ?

Skribble · 18/07/2006 23:22

Window sox look good, don't have them for my model. I just open the front windows and the back one for a good through draft.

Shade definatly helps, anytime you stop park in the shade if at all possible, makes a big difference. Plus it helps to start out with a cool car so if you can park it in the shade before you set off.

PIL are off to france, driving overnight to miss the worst of the traffic and the heat, they will park up and sleep until time for ferry.

charliecat · 18/07/2006 23:24

Flannels/teatowels in a cool bag with ice packs....lovely to slather over neck face feet.
Also squirty bottle with water in, kept in cool bag for maximum effect.

JanH · 18/07/2006 23:32

How about taking along a house-plant mister? Don't let them have it (as if!) but if they grumble about feeling hot you could spray them - it should cool them down and cheer them up

Skribble · 18/07/2006 23:33

OH pick me pick me!!!

I forgot my favourite trick, a pack of baby wipes in a small cool bag with an ice pack. Dish them out every now and then to wipe faces and necks, oh lovely!!!

Skribble · 18/07/2006 23:33

Ah nightmare 2 kids in the back of a car with a plant spray .

essbee, isn't your car a 97-99 Scenic? They're in stock for that

(If I've remembered it completely wrong, )
