Mothers Day :)

Come on then girls, Mothers Day is just around the corner.

Lets do some 'collective pooling of ideas'.

What can I get mum and MIL?

Also, my Grandmother and DH's too.

It can be something bought / made (but keep it easy!) / we can incorporate DD into as well (though she is only 18 months).

Any ideas gratefully received!

x

Mum2ela, I'm getting my mother a "Grandparents' Book" (available from either JoJo Maman Bebe or Blooming Marvellous, can't remember which) in which she and dad can write all about their own childhoods and lives. Ds who's four and a half is starting to show a real interest in olden times, although asking my mother if she wrote with a quill at school was not well-received.

Mum2Ela · 27/02/2004 13:38

Marina - that book sounds fab! It sounds familiar to me too but I have looked on both those sites and cannot find it. Do you have a link?

It was in a print catalogue, Mum2ela I'll have a look tonight and hopefully get a product code.

Mum2Ela · 27/02/2004 13:42

Thats a really good idea Twiglett, and I would if we had one near us (Cardiff) but we don't.

I bought the grandparents book too, and they made fascinating reading for me actually once they'd filled them in. I bought mine from Past times.

if you in acrdiff what about being a bit creative and getting the kids to make welsh lovespoons out of card or even that clay which hardens at room temp or fimo, you can find websites saying what all the different shapes mean. just a though as you live in the land of the dragon.

Mum2Ela · 27/02/2004 15:12

katzguk I will remember that one for future years but I think at the moment DD would just eat the fimo.

I am a fan of lovespoons, I always give them as wedding pressies.

me too, i left cardiff 8 years ago and profess loadly to being English but there is something so beautiful about lovespoons. We have also given them as christening and born presents.

my little one is the same age as your sorry didn't register, would never left her fimo at the moment, shes currently into helping with the redecoration of the living room by peeling wall paper off and eating it!!! so heaven only knows what she'd do with fimo

We got the grandparents book when dd was born for both sets of grandparents to fill in. They've kept it for now and will give it back to dd at some point in the future. A really lovely idea. Ours came fron John Lewis, in the stationary dept alongside wedding memory books.

i read on here once about plates and stuff,(seconds), that kids can paint and then put in the oven. (Make their own plates)

Now, who was that and where did they buy them?

ooohhhhh, sorry twiglett. Is it obvious now that i didn't read the thread

bluesky · 28/02/2004 13:55

I found the plate/bowl set for painting in Sainsburys at around Christmas time. Approx £10. Not sure if they still do them.

What about treating our mothers to a beauty treatment - I know I would like that and so would she. Unfortunately she is in South Africa so I don't even know when they have Mothers Day let alone how to get hold of a voucher for a pedicure or facial!! Actually for Mothers Day I would like to lie in bed all day with an absolutely silent house, cup of tea and my book... but I may well be in labour then anyway, now wouldn't that be a nice pressie!

3GirlsMum · 28/02/2004 14:08

I definitely need some ideas. Usually its just flowers and choccies so something different would be great.

squirmyworm · 28/02/2004 15:16

here are a few ideas...have been researching this myself (ooh I LOVE maternity leave!)

indulgent stuff
day at the sanctuary in London (or similar, eg day at local spa) - you could go with her - expensive but fab
a fantastic chocolate cake - the nigella recipe is to die for
a gorgeous photo of you and yours in a nice frame
a splendid scarf to keep out the cold
a big chunky novel and some flavoured coffee from Whittards or similar

feelgood stuff
adopt a swan or other bird with the wildlife and wetlands trust - you can do it online here . We did this for my neice and went to see her adopted swan last month at Slimbridge in Gloucestershire - it was lovely
send something in her name using a charity like 'send a cow' here they send practical help to farmers in africa, allowing them to build better lives for their families

uh oh - baby a wailing - back soon if I can think of any more!

Twiglett/Angeliz, the diy painting plates thread was by Crunchie 'Fantastic Christmas Present Ideas'. Latest message 12 December. Sorry, can't do links. Anyway, we did this for Christmas. Got our plates and cups from Ikea, and the paints were by Pebeo 'Porcelaine' I think. I think Crunchie says it all in her post though. We had great fun doing it, if a bit messy, with a three year old, and I THINK they were all gratefully received. Have actually stocked up on more plates etc for future pressies.

nearlyfour · 01/03/2004 06:59

Ooh, should also have said Thanks Crunchie for the great idea!

Marina · 01/03/2004 09:31

Mum2Ela, Batters, the Grandparent Book is from Blooming Marvellous item no 6476 (page 38 in the Spring 2004 print catalogue).
The photo is small and makes it a bit hard to judge what the overall "look" of the book is (a bit twee I suspect), but my parents really need a framework and incentive to get down the details of their lives (dad was at D-Day, mum's family home was turned over by the Black & Tans, so lots of exciting reminiscences) so I'm going to risk it.
Lots of other lovely ideas here, great inspiration for a thread!

I don't have a mum and am so envious of all the plans you guys are making.

If you have a lovely mum, I hope you will all tell her how much she means to you, and realise how lucky you are to have her.

Have a lovely mother's day, all!

miggy · 01/03/2004 15:08
