I live in SW London, home of the tossy 4x4s that never see a hill or any mud.

It seems to me that these cars are often driven by teeny weeny pinstick women who are married to big rugby player type men. I think it follows that if you are an ickle bickle lollipop of a woman and you are attracted to a huge manly bear of a man that you like to be pwotected by your big man and so you feel the need for the same type of pwotection from your car.

Do you think I am right?

I mean, usually people are attracted to their own physical shape etc aren't they?

Here endeth the poisson psychology.

these cars are too big for our roads, especially country lanes!

the drivers of em really piss me off.coming back from hospital yesterday with mother driving and we met half a dozen of these huge machines on the country lanes and they just charge through at speed cause theyre so big and the drivers always look so bloody snooty, grrrrrrr!!

Thomcat · 12/07/2006 21:46

Hub - I drive very sensibly. It doesn't feel like a big car so I drive just the same as when I drove my mini. No strike that I drive more carefully.
We got one cos we got it through mobility and already owned a toyota yaris so did an exchange with motorbility and all the other toyotas were a)shit and b)unsuitable for 2 kids a double buggy and all the shit we hump about. Also meant my single best friend could squeeze in and come everywhere with us.

cant imagine why anyone would want to defend their own personal choice over and above any other car owner.

Heathcliffscathy · 12/07/2006 22:07

the original poster is very judgemental

and very very very right

Blondilocks · 12/07/2006 22:09

The thing that bugs me is passing them in narrow country lanes & them expecting ME to go up on the verge! They're the ones in the 4x4!

Having said that potential in-laws have one which is possibly one of the few actually driven around a farm so I can't generalise tooo much.

FrayedKnot · 12/07/2006 22:12

Ahah!

I knew there must be a 4x4 thread somehwere!

Heathcliffscathy · 12/07/2006 22:12

yes! 4x4 drivers that need their tyres to remain pristine...

FWIW, I saw a Rexon 4X4 the other day with a huge sticker pasted onto the windscreen - A cartoon of a tiny man sitting, legs dangling on a car seat with the caption "Yes, well I think I'm worth it...."

Must have taken the owner hours to scrape it off before they could leave the car park!

MissChief · 12/07/2006 22:21

oh where can you buy those stickers? I could spend all day (happily) plastering 4x4s here..
oh the joy..!

Pierre · 12/07/2006 22:28

looked far less scary with paper plastered all over the windscreen

krabbiepatty · 12/07/2006 22:33

For reasons too tedious to relate (but including protecting the vocabulary of the children), DP has replaced the word "wanker" in his vocabulary with the words "chicken nugget" so when he is having one of his regular fits of road rage, he shouts "chicken nugget" at the offending driver. HOWEVER this has now resulted in DS2 (age 4) pointing at 4 x 4s and saying "Oh look, it's a chicken nugget", which is quite hard to explain to any other adult present...

milge · 12/07/2006 22:34

We live in the country - I have to drive down single track with passing places to get my dt's to playgroup. Many people near me drive 4x4's because they live down these lanes and/or are farmers. Many more people drive them because they like to feel superior to others. My 2 nearest neighbours have - an 06 plate M class with blacked out windows and extra aluminium all the way round, an 06 Disco 3 with blacked out windows, an 05 plate X5 and an 04 plate 7 seater I can't identify - Ssayyong??.
The thing that really gets to me is that on the drive to playgroup, the 4x4's sit in the middle of the single track, and me, in my low slung saab, have to drive up the verge, ruining my skirt, whilst they refuse to budge. Aaaaaarrrgggh .

MissChief · 12/07/2006 22:38

they're even worse if you're a pedestrian with kids on foot trying to get to school - going out onto the road because they're on the pavement, not seeing you nr them when parking because they're too bloody high up. the things should be banned for all but agricultural use!

jampots · 12/07/2006 22:38

aaah see Saab drivers round here are as bad as Audi/BMW drivers -

Yes, and ugly single women in their 30s drive flash convertibles in the hope that a man will look at the "packaging" and be simultaneously attracted to the driver.

suejonez · 12/07/2006 23:08

how funny wavingordrowning, that this thread has flushed out so many in this area - I'm always happy to meet for coffee if no-one else wants to be brave enough to do dinner!

So what is the trucky/tanky thing then and why do they have it and do they ever drive it?

MissChief · 12/07/2006 23:09

so just who is it who drives 4x4s then in sw14? if you have a meet-up you'll have to trade yr cars in!

milge · 12/07/2006 23:14

Jampots,I am at being bundled in with bmw drivers. Saab drivers are more offbeat and get all the extras for list price!

jampots · 12/07/2006 23:15

well possibly at the cheaper end of the BMW market then milge

MrsJohnCusack · 12/07/2006 23:16

I might have to drive back to Sheen tomorrow to look at the trucky/tanky thing now....

I don't understand the getting stuff in argument. You get loads more in an estate car (we got a 3 seater sofa in mine with the seats down) - 4X4s often seem to have titchy little boots for their size.

TC - I quite like Rav4s because they aren't ginormous and don't take up the whole blimming road like a Cayenne does. And they're only hairdresser's cars if they're white

(cue TC saying hers is white and MrsJC slinking away, embarassed)

wavingordrowning · 12/07/2006 23:19

SueJ - don't know. Haven't dared ask!
