I just had to tell anyone interested as you were all unbelievable fantastic when I appealed for help over dd's lost toy...
Anyway, dd got worse, or stayed the same, drew strawberry at school, and told her teacher that one day, she'd pick something up she hadn't used for a long time, and he'd be there. (This was something I once told her and she kept repeating and held on to the hope.) Sometimes, she'd cry a little (not a wail, more a sob) in the mornings, and so it went on... We finally decided to perform radical surgery on Emma's strawberry which was too big, and we got all past pics of him, measured, compared, snipped and tacked.. His hands were too big and his feet, but maybe....
He was going to be sewn back together THIS WEEK - then guess what?? Our washing machine broke. Today it was removed and behind the pipes, in a dark, wet corner WAS THE BOY!!
We are drying him off, then will let her 'pick something up and he'll be there' as this is how she thinks it will be..
I'll get a photo soon! Still rather tearful.
Thanks so much mumsnet for all your TLC!

skie · 25/02/2004 17:44

Emma - and I'm so sorry your has been mutilated and is now a shadow of his former self!
We are now planning to compare dimensions exactly etc and will have him on stand by just in case the unthinkable happens.
Anyone know how to insert microchips in order to track soft toys?

Oh I'm sobbing myself. How absolutely wonderful

Luckymum · 25/02/2004 18:11

Skie...........Hooray Hooray.....I was only thinking about Strawberry last night. I had read 'Dogger' to my DD (its about a lost stuffed toy) and it brings a lump to my throat everytime I read it. It made me think of your poor dd.

SoupDragon · 25/02/2004 18:18

hurrah!!!

But I can't believe you've not cleaned behind your washing machine in all that time. Tut tut!

mears · 25/02/2004 18:22

That is so amazing Please let us know how it goes. Funnily enough I have often wondered what you finally did

Tinker · 25/02/2004 18:57

Oh, I couldn't breath reading that. You need to record the event to show it in slow motion later

popsycal · 25/02/2004 18:58

Oh wow!
This is such a lovely story!!!

crystaltips · 25/02/2004 19:01

Perhaps Old Strawberry and New Strawberry can become friends !!

Janh · 25/02/2004 19:12

Luckymum, I had to stop reading Dogger out loud because it made me cry so much!

skie, that is such a brilliant happy ending, I really thought you were right and he'd gone out with Daddy's birthday wrappings - SO glad he hadn't (have you washed him? He'd be a bit rank by now I should think!)

Photo please!

Rhubarb · 25/02/2004 19:18

Yes do let us know how she reacts! But how on earth are you going to make sure that he doesn't get lost again? It might still be worth trying to track down another just in case....!

emmatmg · 25/02/2004 19:21

perhaps old strawberry can 'say' he found a new strawberry on his travels and wanted DD to care him as he's been mutilated with a sewing machine

katierocket · 25/02/2004 19:24

DD is now sleeping upstairs with strawberry, cheek to cheek like they always did! Sigh. What bliss!
She was crying about an argument with her sister and I said (as I could say it this time), 'Who's the one friend that could cheer you up?' She said, 'Strawberry', so I told her to look under the towel on the radiator next to her (he was drying off after a wash). She couldn't believe it and didn't say anything for the longest time! Just looking at him, putting him to her face, looking again, big, deep sobbing sounds. (She later descrobed it as 'laughing AND crying'. His handle has been hanging from her finger ever since, just like the old days - it's so weird! Like his ghost or something!
When she lay down in bed with him, she had tears in her eyes again, she said she couldn't believe he was back. As she was being tucked up, she said, 'I love strawberry more than my mum!' When I looked at her, she quickly 'rephrased' it. 'I mean I love strawberry more than my mum loves strawberry - because he IS mine!' Actually, I think the first one was probably true!

Her love for that 20 p piece of fleece is so strange and strong and inexplicable! I couldn't read Dogger or any of those stories with out welling up and feeling jealous of the happy endings! May be I'll dig it out tomorrow!

We took some pictures!

By the way, thanks, thanks THANKS for understanding. I tried lots of other sites and had nothing like the same response!
One person actually said something like, 'So sorry to hear about your little girl. Why don't you take her out in the car to a toy shop and let her choose another toy as a replacement'.

IF only it was that simple!
