Interested in this one

personally I feel only when they're old enough to earn the money themselves to pay for it

I'm opposed to tellies in people's rooms, for any age. I wouldn't have a telly in our bedroom.

I guess if your kid can pay for it themselves, then ok.

NamedAfterCbeebies · 30/06/2006 16:35

After GCSE's

Thomcat · 30/06/2006 16:36

When they get to that horrible teenage period when you don't want them around anyway and are happy for them to disappear into their rooms and give you some space! About 15 / 16 I guess, depends on the individual but not before 14 yrs I'd say.

expatinscotland · 30/06/2006 16:38

when they're 2. it's a great babysitter.

sfxmum · 30/06/2006 16:38

never don't have one in my bedroom would not allow one for children, unless they earn their money and buy it, but by then i guess they will want their own place anyway

crunchie · 30/06/2006 16:44

Twiglett I think the idea that when they are old enough to pay for it is a good one. I am going to use that. Mine are only 7 and 5 ATM so we can wait. We have enough TV's in other rooms

tassis · 30/06/2006 16:45

we don't have one in ours, and wouldn't want children to until they were late teens

WigWamBam · 30/06/2006 16:46

I'm with you on this, Twiglett ... dd can have a TV in her room when she can pay for it herself.

I don't like TVs in bedrooms, but I guess with a teenager it's not quite the same thing - it's more a case of wanting their own space, and wanting to be able to do whatever they like in there.

southeastastra · 30/06/2006 16:48

my ds(12) got one when he was 10

charliecat · 30/06/2006 16:48

Is this a tv to watch TV or a tv to watch dvds/videos?
My kids have got a tv to watch dvd/videos and I have to ENCOURAGE them to watch it
It cant be used to watch eastenders or the news or anything. Just U/PG rated things that have passed my eyes first.
They have had it since dd1 was 5.

They really do have to be encouraged, generally with popcorn and pringles and the heading of a movie night to sit and watch the damn thing.

Nemo1977 · 30/06/2006 16:48

never really thought about it as mine are too little yet.

serenity · 30/06/2006 16:49

Totally agree with Thomcat. I'm very possessive about my evenings, and once DCs are old enough to be up to interfere with my personal slob out time I'd like them to be able to retire to their own space and watch inappropriate TV. 14/15 sounds OK.

lahdeedah · 30/06/2006 16:52

I got a cheap portable TV for my 13th birthday, and was very glad of it as I was just getting that age where I wanted to be alone most of the time, wallowing in teen angst. I was (and still am) a big movie fan, so eventually saved up enough money to buy myself a cheap video player and accumulated a huge video collection too. Don't think it did me any harm, so will probably treat my kids the same. Wouldn't let them have one any younger anyway.

Tortington · 30/06/2006 16:53

you go twiglett girl - i like your way of thinking.

i think when they get into senior school and no earlier.

earlier than that its doing the parenting for you - after that its entertaiment

southeastastra · 30/06/2006 16:55

my kids seem bored by the tv alot of the time

Mercy · 30/06/2006 16:58

I was 18 when I had a tv in my bedroom but most of my classmates had had one from about the age of 14 - 16, which I think is probably about right.

wannaBe1974 · 30/06/2006 16:59

twiglet I have exactly the same view as you - he can have one when he can afford one. Same applies to having a mobile phone.

I grew up in South Africa and there you have to pay for a tv licence for every tv you own, so tv's in bedrooms just didn't happen. When we came back I was horrified to discover how many kids have tv's in their bedrooms.

Caligula · 30/06/2006 17:00

Absolutely agree with you Twiglett.

nutcracker · 30/06/2006 17:01

My Dd1 aged 8 and Dd2 aged 6 both have tv's in their rooms but are only allowed to watch dvds when I ok it.

As for a full on tv with all the channels etc then probably when they are contributing towards the licence fee.

cataloguequeen · 30/06/2006 17:02

when they start paying me rent!!lol

JonesTheSteam · 30/06/2006 17:02

I never had one, though my parents did have a TV in the dining room, and I pretty much lived in there for about 4 years between 13 and 17!!!

When I was teaching I was constantly amazed by the number of children in my class (9 and 10 yr-olds) who had their own TV!!!

13 / 14 at the earliest, I reckon.

southeastastra · 30/06/2006 17:05

my ds(12)uses it for gaming really but i was horrified when i caught him watching 'the autopsy'

JonesTheSteam · 30/06/2006 17:06

My teacher's aide allowed her DS to have a TV when he was about 13.

When it was time for him to go to sleep, she used to take the fuse out of the plug, so he couldn't watch anything she didn't think he should!!

katierocket · 30/06/2006 17:17

Probably around 14. It's sad though because I think once they get one you'll never see them again - mind you with teenagers that may not be a bad thing?!

dinosaure · 30/06/2006 17:20

Not before they're at secondary school.
