I keep getting calls on my mobile from that way, but they hang up when I answer. Can't be bothered spending money to call them back.

Newcastle under lyme, Staffordshire

Festivefly · 18/02/2004 15:14

Actually it could be keele or anywhere. Just Staffordshire

fisil · 18/02/2004 15:20

I know 01728. Doesn't help, I know, but it's similar!

lou33 · 18/02/2004 16:29

Hmmmm, the puzzle grows. Don't know anyone thereabouts.

According to the BT directory enquiries website, the area for that number centres on Stoke on Trent.

lou33 · 18/02/2004 16:54

Am still looking blankly around. Wonder who it is? How they got my number? Is it a sceret admirer!? Probably just a fool being silly.

OP posts:
lou33 · 18/02/2004 16:54

Maybe I should post the number on here, then you can all ring it and tell them to stop hassling me!

Furball · 18/02/2004 17:04

Theres a 'scam' just been on radio 1. Aparently you get a call on your mobile, they hang up, you ring back and are diverted to one of those premium rate things. Calls can cost you upto £20!!

Furball · 18/02/2004 17:05

PS. Just checked BT site and the code is Stoke on Trent.

lou33 · 18/02/2004 17:53

I don't know anyone in Stoke!!!! Can a normal area code be diverted to a premium line without you knowing?

OP posts:
bundle · 18/02/2004 17:54

i bet it can, you can divert calls to any number

lou33 · 18/02/2004 17:56

That would be evry naughty wouldn't it, not being told in advance. Oh well, there was me thinking I might have had a hapless secret admirer!

crystaltips · 18/02/2004 17:58

I think you should listen to furball ... dont call it as I think it's a scam.
Just ignore it ... easier said than done !

Festivefly · 18/02/2004 18:00

I keep typing in 01728 on my search engine and it comes up with business' all over the country, the last one i checked was Suffolk. So perhaps it could be any where

lou33 · 18/02/2004 18:00

No I am too tight to call it. Might text it tho!

OP posts:
lou33 · 18/02/2004 18:01

OP posts:
Festivefly · 18/02/2004 18:12

Clayhead · 18/02/2004 18:15

Remember that Phones for U/the rest of the Cauldwell Empire is based in Stoke...

squirmyworm · 18/02/2004 18:50

just heard item about this on radio 4 - apparantly they hang up or only let it ring for one ring in the hope that you will call them back - you then get a message saying you've won something but need to call another number to claim your 'prize'...guess what - it's a top cost premium rate number

lou33 · 18/02/2004 19:10

I've had calls on my landline, which have a pre recorded message saying I have won a prize, but I always hang up as soon as I realise. If it happens again maybe I will text them.

OP posts:
survivour · 18/02/2004 19:14

01784= belongs to Ashford- middlesex, if its any help.

Luckymum · 18/02/2004 19:35

01782 is Stoke/Newcastle under lyme.........but its not me calling Lou.

lou33 · 18/02/2004 21:49

You sure it isn't ?

OP posts:
Paula71 · 19/02/2004 00:34

If you get a call like that on your mobile or landline do not press 3. There are a whole bunch of scams going on the fact people are curious!

As soon as you try and find out who called you go onto a premium rate. BT as usual do nothing. We get calls like this at home all the time and luckily I knew of this before they happened.
