Why Oh Why

Dont want to start an argument but why do some parents insist that their dsor dd wears shoes/trainers when they are not even walking. I can never understand why tiny babies wear nike trainers etc. Booties to keep feet warm I understand. They obviously love and care for their babies but dont shoes damage their feet when their bones are still soft??

Have to admit that DD did have some soft shoes before she was walking but not inside. She wore them when outside to keep her feet warm but they were always plently big enough. I just don't really go in for booties. They were always good quality leather ones though.

Also DD was taking steps outside from before 5 months - holding my hands or solid items. I just rather she had something on her feet outside that would protect her feet.

Even now at 22 months she never wears shoes (or socks) indoors.

I mean heavy or restricting shoes not the sort of soft leather ones you mean I think Hulababy. My ds (8) has never worn shoes inside either.

Agree proper shoes shouldn't be worn pre walking at all - inside or outside.

Hulababy · 16/02/2004 17:50

I don't wear shows or socks inside either. DH's family think I am mad as I don't really even like slippers I make them take their shoes off whent hey come here and they always have to bring slippers as can't cope ewithout anything.

Hulababy · 16/02/2004 17:51

It was just with you mentioning the Nike trainers. DD had some Addidas ones - a present - but again they were very soft leather, and had lots of room inside so not really any different to baby shoes.

GeorginaA · 16/02/2004 17:53

This used to really annoy me - I got told off for not putting shoes on ds (he was then crawling) at one of the family drop-in centres that we used to go to. Their reasoning - he might get trodden on and get hurt without shoes?!

Um... a) they should be used to lots of crawling babies under foot.. b) if he gets trodden on it'll hurt him, shoes or no shoes!

Davros · 16/02/2004 18:09

My sil & bil were in the children's shoe business for over 20 years. They are absolutely categoric that babies should not wear shoes of any sort before they are walking and then only outside. They include those soft leather (Bobuk?) things and believe babies should wear socks or tights to keep their feet warm as long as they aren't too tight.

Zerub · 16/02/2004 18:28

Oh, thats interesting. Whats wrong with the the soft leather (bobux, daisy roots etc) ones then? DD had those from about 6 months (before that it was warm and she had bare feet) because they stayed on, and socks didn't. She still has some daisy roots slippers for indoors (prefers them to socks, I think they're less constricting).

AussieSim · 16/02/2004 18:37

My answer is because DS's over-excited Dad bought them and was visibly disappointed when I said that DS was too young to wear them. Just to humour DH I think DS wore them twice (complete waste of money). My DS started wearing the little soft leather shoes at 11mths.

aloha · 16/02/2004 19:07

I don't wear shoes at all if I can help it - always bare feet at home. Ds didn't have shoes apart from some cute supersoft ones for special events until he was 18months or so and started to walk. He loves shoes though and insists on wearing them indoors. Funny boy.

LadyCodworth · 16/02/2004 19:11

going bare foot gives my feet horrndous hard skin.

chirop says it is not to be advised

JennH · 16/02/2004 19:12

My daughter has shoes which were bought as presents, she wears them out mainly. I can't keep socks on her though, so booties and shoes are the only way to keep her feet warm.

LadyCodworth · 16/02/2004 19:13

my dsses wear soft shoes velcro type ones as babies to keep their feet warm.

SoupDragon · 16/02/2004 19:15

Davros, do your SIL & BIL have any advice on how to keep those recommended socks on a child without soft leather shoes? Duck tape, velcro, super glue... ? I lost so many socks before I discovered Inch Blue shoes for DS2

I must say that I don't understand the problem with the Inch Blue type shoes when they're not walking - aren't they just the same as socks? I always imagined they would be worse when walking as the foor must slide inside them. Interesting!

kizzie · 16/02/2004 19:37

baby gap socks were the only ones I found stayed on their feet. Thought they were too expensive at first but because we never lost any - worked out cheaper.

Eeek, our place is much too cold to go bare foot! Kiddies only ever had booties.

Levanna · 16/02/2004 22:32

My DD wore only bootees in the buggy, if it was cold out, and maybe socks at home. She doesn't wear shoes at home now that she's walking either. BTW, does anyone else have well meaning relatives who buy unfitted shoes for their DD's/DS's too? Having taken great care over her feet so far, I'm not about to start plonking unfitted shoes on her now .

Beccarollover · 17/02/2004 07:58

You would hate me - DS (5 months) has a few pairs of soft trainers - I think they are v cute! Hear what your saying about their feet, he only wears them outdoors and they are very soft and do not constrict his feet anymore than say daisy roots ones!

kiwisbird · 17/02/2004 08:48

Bobux here to keep her non slip on the floors, we had cruising shoes for a while as DD was so light when cruising (13lbs) that she would slip as she had not enough weight to get traction! But as soon as she got it we took them off her.

Also the Bobux when out keep her from pulling her socks off and as they are soft leather then they are perfect for her feet. I am in agreement with the shoes really, I'm not keen on putting them on until a baby is walking outside a good few paces and si very steady! And then I buy the best I can afford!

LadyCodworth · 17/02/2004 08:50

br - go girl

I think people get up their own areses about this.

after all I ma sure we all wore the wrong shoes and we can all walk cant we?

kiwisbird · 17/02/2004 08:50
