I thought ir ead somewhere they were now issuing them at birth?

Airy · 21/06/2006 17:03

Yes I was told recently that NI numbers are issued at birth when I was asked for dd's on a form, not sure where you would find it though.
Sorry not much help!

Oh right, thanks!

Thats news to me. I wonder how I would go about finding it out. Contact social security offices?

I cannot remember ever having one for her.

Hiya, Think you can find it from the Child Benefit people or the www.dwp.gov.uk I needed to know my 3 year old's recently and they gave it to me.

Gem13 · 21/06/2006 17:14

Just Googled this.

NI numbers definitely issued when a child is coming up to 16.

NHS numbers given at birth.

I filled in an E111 form the other day for all of us that asked for NI or NHS numbers.

Gem13 · 21/06/2006 17:16

To get Child Benefit you give their your NI number.

tallulah · 21/06/2006 17:20

My DS was given a NINO when he got DLA, long before 16, if that's any help.

Airy · 21/06/2006 17:25

My dd definitely had a NI no. Gem and she's only 5

Next · 21/06/2006 18:19

Have searched direct gov and inland revenue sites and no mention of NI no for under sixteens. Mysterious!!! Tallulah - was your child given a number before applying for dla?

My dd's National Insurance number is on the sticker with her details on, inside her red book.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/06/2006 18:45

If you apply for DLA they definitely get a NI. Dd has one.

juuule · 21/06/2006 19:15

My ds was notified of his NI no only recently. He has just turned 16 and leaves school this June.

peachyClair · 21/06/2006 19:32

I think the NI number at 16 id a new initiative, I am sure I saw an article on the news a few years (or maybe less) ago when they gave the first one?

juuule · 21/06/2006 19:39

I got my NI no. when I left school 30 years ago. I wasn't aware that anything had changed regarding NI numbers. Has something changed?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/06/2006 19:43

Me too juule - you always got your NI number when you left school at 16. I think they are probably allocated at birth but you aren't actually given them until 16 unless you claim a benefit for them. Child benefit is your benefit.

NHS numbers are different and are issued at birth.

Expectantmum · 21/06/2006 19:48

When I opened my DS (1 yr) Child Trust Fund, the account number they gave him was apparently his NI number. I queried it with the Abbey but they said that it was definitely his NI number. Not sure if that helps you though.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/06/2006 19:51

That's probably true expectant mum.

WigWamBam · 21/06/2006 20:00

Saggy, my dd's number was definitely issued at birth, it's in her red book and is completely different to her NHS number. Maybe different local governments handle it differently?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/06/2006 20:02

WWB, I think it's probably changed with these Child Trust Fund thingys - that's Government money isn't it? Didn't have them when mine were little. They have to know it's been given so I suppose the NI number is the best way of keeping track.

WigWamBam · 21/06/2006 20:04

Dd is too old for the child trust thing though, she didn't get it.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/06/2006 20:10

Well confused then lol!
