As you all know, i am very short of space at the mo and would like to know which bits of storage equipment are the best to buy. I don't really want piles and piles of boxes.
I also need somewhere/thing to store shoes in, that isn't to big, and looks nice IYKWIM
So which bits of storage equipment have you got and what do you put in it ?????

Bin liners - sorry, not really what you wanted, but when we downsized and ran out of storage space, having a damn good clearout was the best thing I did Still need to get rid of more junk though

Not sure about shoes, but for storing clothes those vacuum bags are good to really shrink storage space. For toys, stacking boxes are the best thing invented, as are buying beds with drawers underneath.

How big is your hallway? You can get those seat things that have shoe racks underneath - most are pretty hideous but I've seen the occasional gem.

Have a good clearout of your wardrobe then get one of those vertical shoe rack stores for the floor of the wardrobe?

Georgeina - My hall is very small so couldn't fit anything like that in it. Had forgotten about those vacuum bag thingies, i'll have to try them. I bought some bin liners today ready for another clear out, but there really isn't that much more i can chuck out. I have an enormous bulit in wardrobe but can't put to much in it as it goes mouldy.
Twiglett - I think i've got one of those door things somewhere. Hopefully when i have a clear out i'll find it.

am loving this storage thread, how sad am i? anyone got any brainwaves for how to store knickers, bras, socks, tights etc in a wardrobe or a drawer so you don't have one big mess of undergarments?

nutcracker · 13/02/2004 14:38

I thought you could get those plastic divider things for drawers ???? I haven't got any, my drawers are a mess.
Glad you are loving the thread Madgirl, i thought no one would reply because it was boring

i spend more time on the product boards than the pregnancy one and i am 19 weeks today! i seem to remember seeing those plastic dividers but no idea where to get them. re your bathroom we have the smallest bathroom in the world and we recently got some of those over-the-door stainless steel little shelves- very good as doesn't take up floor space (good job as we don't have any). how about buying one of those coffee tables which are actually square trunks for storage of stuff?

GeorginaA · 13/02/2004 14:43

Ugh, nutcracker Um, how about having a look around your closest room (living room?) - is there somewhere you can "tidily" hide shoes? We restrict ourselves to one pair each and line them up next to the sofa, which isn't ideal but it does minimize the clutter. Just behind the sofa if it's right back against a wall can keep them tidy/out of sight too.

Madgirl - I'm sure I've seen drawer dividers in either Kleeneze or Lakeland magazine - they're a plastic insert which divides a drawer into diamond-shape segments so you can slot underwear into the different sections.

Ooo... forgot another storage thingumy I love. We have a huge built in wardrobe but no space for a chest of drawers, so I got one of those open metal-mesh drawer units to put underwear/jumpers in etc. It actually works quite well as everything gets a good airing in there! Might be a solution for your moldy wardrobe, nutcracker?

Also could you look at getting some of those damp removing gizmos (a bigger version of the packets of silicate you get in some packaging to keep everything dry) - might make your wardrobe more practical?

GeorginaA · 13/02/2004 14:50

The Drawer Organiser from Lakeland.

I also like the idea of their Junk Drawer Organiser too... could probably do with one myself!

For spare shoes rather than everyday wear shoes, what about something like www.lakelandlimited.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/GBP/DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=e6bpc4vA06tgXMvsmSfldSMAt8OQkxqJFKU=?ProductID=HW7Cy5OSfl4AAADqiT8h2OmE\this{}? The bag could then be bunged behind the sofa or under the bed nice and tidily.

GeorginaA · 13/02/2004 14:51

Ooops... last link should be here

GeorginaA · 13/02/2004 14:51

Something like this for shoe storage might work - you'd have to get the mould issues in the wardrobe sorted first though

madgirl · 13/02/2004 15:00

fantastic! thanks georginaA. excellent.

Nome · 13/02/2004 15:05

I use one of those shoe hanger things from Ikea in my wardrobe for knickers and bras and socks etc. Saves loads of drawer space. It's pretty ugly, but I try to keep the wardrobe door closed...

GeorginaA · 13/02/2004 15:06

I'm not a Lakeland rep honest It's just that their site is nicely searchable! While I'm on a roll, would this moisture trap help with the wardrobe issues, nutcracker?

madgirl · 13/02/2004 15:09

i've ordered a catalogue, which means i'll get even more catalogues now, dh will laugh his head off at me, i love catalogues.

GeorginaA · 13/02/2004 15:14

It's terrible - there's a Lakeland shop near me and I've never been in one before moving here - and the entrance is really easy to get in with a pushchair. I have to force myself to speed up as I get near so I don't go in!

I got really excited about buying mini pudding tins from there the other week. Sad or what? And I still haven't made anything to go in them yet!!!

madgirl · 13/02/2004 15:25

where are you georginaA? praphs we could have a mumsnetter meet-up in lakeland, and we could all wear "sad" badges

SoupDragon · 13/02/2004 15:29

My garage. I put everything in it except the car.

GeorginaA · 13/02/2004 15:57

madgirl - in Worcester Sounds good to me

SoupDragon - ah yes... we still have floor to ceiling boxes from when we moved and nowhere to put the contents Hence bin liners being my top tip

JemimaBobbins · 13/02/2004 16:17

We had a Lakeland store open near us recently. I was so excited when I saw the sign go up on the building and had to keep doing detours to keep going past it to see when it opened!!!

fairydust · 13/02/2004 16:40

This won't help for shoes but may help for other bits.

Although our new kitchen is great we still have far to much stuff in there - so for all the knick knacks i brought some nice small wicker baskets and have put them on the top of cuboards they keeps things tidy and look nice..
