new car seat law how will parents enforce it

just seen a bit about it. doesn't affect me as dd is in a wheelchair and ds is 14. but how ill parents enforce it. If you have say an 8 yr old who regards them as "baby seats".
This is a direct quote from an 8yr old. i was giving him and his mum a lift. already had ds and his mate in the car so assumed that said boy would sit in dd's sn seat which goes up to 11. he refused as it was a "baby seat" and instead sat on his mums lap( didn't offer a lift again due to other reasons as well)
so made me curious I think it is a good idea by the way.
over to you:o

its the law .. if you want a lift you'll use the seat

if you don't go in the car you can go and sit in your room

bubblez · 14/06/2006 14:14

what is the new car seat law now out of interest as we will soon be road worthy??

LIZS · 14/06/2006 14:15

My 8 year old is still in his . He's very safety conscious anyway.

WigWamBam · 14/06/2006 14:18

I'm with Twiglett ... if they don't want to sit in a car seat then they don't get a lift. In your shoes I wouldn't have allowed him to travel sitting on his mother's lap even without the new regulations in force, it's just not safe.

LIZS · 14/06/2006 14:18

It is the UK legislation of an EU directive regarding the use fo car seats for children - details of the existing and new laws \link{http://www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk/campaigns/childcarseats/childcarseats.htm#01\here} Think it is now supposed to come into effect in the autumn.

LIZS · 14/06/2006 14:20

Agree WWB especially since it is the driver's responsibilty, and he/she who could be prosecuted.

2shoes · 14/06/2006 14:21

WigWamBam so agree I was stupid and shouldn't have it was a couple of years ago and haven't done it since.
LOL at the time I was more annoyed that he called dd's seat a baby seat as she is older than him!!
Can't help wondering how this will be policed as you don't seem to hear of parents being done when the child is loose luggage.

The new law is a nice idea. But since I see parents flouting the current law all the time, I doubt this will make much, if any difference. (e.g. I see kids sitting on the back seat, not buckled up at all.)

And anyway, the law only applies to "usual" travel - not to one-off lifts, if I remember correctly.

Wordsmith · 14/06/2006 14:24

Do these rules man that whatever your child's age, if he/she is over 135cm tall then he/she doesn't have to use a booster seat and can just use a seatbelt? So it's a height rather than an age thing?

melrose · 14/06/2006 14:25

Is already law! Came in in May and appallingly advertised!

SaintGeorge · 14/06/2006 14:29

No, in comes in in September in the UK

SaintGeorge · 14/06/2006 14:31

I am so positive it comes in in September that I will totally overuse the word in to emphasis the point.

My boys were most "put out" to discover that they will have to carry on using their booster seats.
They will be 8 in October, but we just said,"If you don't sit on the seat, you don't go in the car." Very simpleGrin

jac34 · 14/06/2006 14:38

Also, anyone know when it came in/comes in for the rest of Europe???Just thinking of the hire car on holidays.

Don't understand the link, sorry.
Have a 3 (nearly 4) year old nephew who rides in-between 2 car seats, so there isn't enough room for a booster. He wears a lap belt - is this legal?

2shoes · 14/06/2006 15:02

god lap belts are lethal. think of what hapens in a crash.

OP posts:
purpleturtle · 14/06/2006 15:04

If there isn't actually room for a 3rd seat, it is permissible not to have one. In fact, there are so many acceptable exceptions, that the law must be pretty much unenforceable anyway.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 14/06/2006 15:11

2shoes - I can't restrain him any other way. I only have a Seat Ibiza which is small and has 2 doors, so you can imagine it is annoying. I have been thinking of getting bigger car, but how do people restrain 3 children under 5??

mumfor1standfinaltime · 14/06/2006 15:12

I have't got 3 btw! One ds and 1 niece and nephew! My name would def have to change!

2shoes · 14/06/2006 15:16

mumfor1standfinaltime sorry worded it wrong. Should have made it clear I bleme the manufactors for the waist seatbelts not the parents.

OP posts:
mumfor1standfinaltime · 14/06/2006 15:20

2shoes, didn't mean to offend. It bugs me putting lapbelt on him. Bless him, he sits wedged between 2 car seats.

Remember when we were small we had no seat belts in the back of my dad's car (Austin Princess!) and my sister lunged forward one day and landed on the hand brake. Awful.

bluejelly · 14/06/2006 15:27

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap one or have one for sale?
DD is 6 and 125 cm so don't expect to use it for long

SparklyGothKat · 14/06/2006 15:34

My 8 year old has always used a carseat, so when the law changed and suppliers started to make hi-backed carseats for older children, I brought one.

GDG · 14/06/2006 15:37

mumfor1standfinaltime - I had 3 car seats across the back of mondeo - squashed but fit in. No way would I let a child of 3 or 4 travel with a lapbelt. We've bought a Grand Voyager now so I can have extra boosters in for friends/relatives that travel with us.

It's difficult though, I know that's not an option for everyone.

OTOH, I'd just say that I couldn't give someone a lift if I couldn't fit a seat in for them.
